Roblox now separates in-game chat, direct messages inside games, and conversations outside games—and access depends on a child’s age, account type, region, age check, and parental settings. For most Roblox Kids accounts (ages 5–8), chat is off by default and chat outside games is disabled; for Roblox Select accounts (ages 9–15), Direct Chat starts off and a parent may enable it for eligible users.
What changed—and what the under-13 rule means now
Roblox’s November 2024 announcement said users under 13 would no longer be able to directly message other users outside games, and would need parental consent for direct messaging inside experiences. That remains an important distinction, but it is not a complete description of current Roblox communication. Roblox now describes several separate chat surfaces, and access can differ by account type, feature, region, and settings.

Roblox says users must complete an age check to access chat in regions where chat is available. Its current system also limits communication by age group and trusted-friend status. These controls are not a guarantee that unsafe contact cannot happen: Roblox says no system is perfect.
Roblox’s chat features are not all the same
Roblox’s Safety FAQs distinguish communication by where it happens. A setting or rule for one feature should not automatically be treated as a rule for every other feature.

- Experience Chat: Messages between people in the same game or experience.
- Direct Chat: One-to-one messages within a game. Roblox Support describes in-game direct chat as including the
/wcommand in a game server. - Chat tab: Conversations outside a game. This is the surface most closely related to the 2024 restriction on direct messaging outside experiences.
- Friends chat and Party chat: Additional communication options with their own controls in Roblox’s parental settings.
Availability varies: Roblox says chat is offered only in some regions. A child’s age group, account type, age-check status, and enabled settings all affect what they can use.
How age groups and account types affect chat
Roblox Kids: ages 5–8 in most regions
Roblox says chat is off by default for Roblox Kids accounts, and chat outside games is disabled. A parent may enable some in-game chat. The Safety Center describes that communication as limited to age-appropriate users and trusted friends.
Roblox Select: ages 9–15 in most regions
For Roblox Select accounts, the Safety Center says in-game Experience Chat is available between age-appropriate users and trusted friends. Direct Chat starts off; a parent may turn it on for eligible users. The Chat tab has separate access rules: ages 9–12 can use it only with trusted friends, while ages 13–15 can use it with trusted friends and friends in a similar age group.

General age bands Roblox lists for chat
Roblox’s FAQ gives the following general communication bands when chat is available and enabled. They describe the FAQ’s stated age-group rules, not a universal rule for every chat surface or account type.
| User’s age | May communicate with |
|---|---|
| 5–8 | Users under 13 |
| 9–12 | Users under 16 |
| 13–15 | Users ages 9–17 |
| 16–17 | Users ages 13–20 |
| 18–20 | Users 16 and older |
| 21 and older | Users 18 and older |
These bands do not override feature-specific restrictions, trusted-friend requirements, account settings, or regional availability. Roblox’s Safety Center also describes Roblox Select access in terms of age-appropriate users and trusted friends; check the child’s actual account controls rather than assuming one age table applies to every chat feature.
How parents can check and change communication settings
Roblox Support directs parents to Settings → Parental Controls → Settings you manage → Communication. The available options depend on the account and feature. Roblox documents parental consent requirements for users under 9 to enable Game chat, and for users under 13 to enable Game direct chat.

- Review the available Game chat, Game direct chat, Friends chat, and Party controls; change only the options appropriate for your child.
- Review the child’s friends or connections and use Roblox’s block and report features if needed.
Roblox cautions that these documented parental settings do not apply to chat features independently developed by creators. A game may therefore have communication features that are not governed by the same controls; parents should consider the specific experience their child is using.

Roblox’s stated answer is determined by the chat feature, age group, account settings, region, and whether the other person is an ordinary friend or a trusted friend. For a child account, parental controls and trusted-friend status can matter as much as the broad age band. Roblox’s FAQs describe parents becoming a trusted friend as the current route for chatting with their child under the relevant flow.
To understand who a child is interacting with, review their friends or connections and the communication controls available through parental settings. These checks can show relationships and limit available chat, but they do not establish that every creator-built chat feature is covered by Roblox’s documented controls.

What Roblox’s age-check figures do—and do not—show
In a January 7, 2026 announcement, Roblox said age-estimation models used for users younger than 18 had a mean absolute error of 1.4 years, citing testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. That is Roblox’s report of a named testing result, not a claim that every individual estimate is accurate to within 1.4 years.
Roblox also reported that more than 50% of daily active users in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands had completed an age check after the requirement began there in early December, and said tens of millions of daily active users had completed one. These are Roblox-reported adoption figures; they do not demonstrate that age checks have reduced harm or eliminated unsafe contact.
Practical safety steps beyond the settings
- Talk with your child about who they are speaking to, what information they should keep private, and how to get help if a conversation feels uncomfortable.
- Discuss requests to move a conversation to another website or app. Roblox says leaving its platform means giving up protections available there and can make reporting or investigation more difficult.
- Use the platform’s block and report tools when a user or interaction raises concern.
- Keep in mind that Roblox’s own executives say no system can prevent all objectionable content from appearing on the platform.
Roblox’s age checks and messaging restrictions are layers of control, not a substitute for family conversations, appropriate account settings, and attention to how a child is using a particular experience.
