Roblox Player Ruben Sim Permanently Barred Under 2022 Court Order

A federal court’s January 14, 2022 stipulated judgment permanently barred Benjamin Robert Simon, known online as Ruben Sim, from accessing Roblox through an account and ordered him to pay Roblox $150,000. The case ended by agreement, not a trial verdict establishing every allegation Roblox made.

What did the court order?

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California entered a stipulated order permanently enjoining Simon from accessing the Roblox platform, except for public portions that do not require an account. The judgment begins its restrictions with the court-order language: “Defendant is hereby permanently restrained and enjoined from the following actions:” Read the stipulated judgment.

Beyond the access restriction, the order barred specified conduct, including making false threats of terrorist activity relating to Roblox; knowingly making false factual statements about Roblox; glorifying or encouraging violence against Roblox, its employees, or its facilities; and violating Roblox’s terms in connection with platform use. It also required Simon to remove covered content within seven days and submit a compliance report within ten days. These are the terms of this particular order, not a general court rule for Roblox players.

Why did Roblox sue Ruben Sim?

Roblox Corporation filed its complaint against Simon on November 23, 2021. The company alleged, among other things, that he evaded a Roblox ban and made threats connected to the 2021 Roblox Developers Conference. Those claims are allegations in Roblox’s complaint, not trial findings. See Roblox’s complaint.

Roblox also alleged that posts about the conference prompted a temporary lockdown and police and private-security activity, costing the company more than $50,000. The complaint further said Roblox spent more than $100,000 investigating and blocking repeated ban evasion. These figures describe what Roblox claimed; the stipulated judgment did not itemize its award by allegation or provide a line-by-line accounting.

How much did Ruben Sim have to pay?

The final judgment awarded Roblox $150,000. Its operative language states that “a judgment in the amount of $150,000 is entered in favor of Plaintiff Roblox and against Defendant.” The judgment does not explain how that total was allocated among claims.

Roblox’s 2021 complaint had requested $1.65 million and injunctive relief. That larger figure was the company’s original demand, not the amount awarded. Ars Technica described the initial request as $1.6 million when reporting on the judgment. Ars Technica’s report.

Was this a trial ruling or a general precedent?

It was a stipulated final judgment: the parties agreed to the resolution, which the court entered. The order imposes its stated restrictions on Simon, but it is not a trial opinion determining every allegation in Roblox’s complaint.

Nor does the case establish a general legal precedent that courts will permanently ban users from games or online services for evading platform bans. Ars Technica reported that the case-specific agreement does not set such a rule. Its significance is the particular injunction and payment entered in this dispute, not a universal standard for platform moderation.
