Roblox requires an age check to use communication features such as Experience chat, Voice chat, and Friends-related communication in regions where chat is available. The rollout began in select markets in December 2025 and expanded globally in January 2026. It is a requirement for communication, not for playing Roblox: users who decline the check can generally keep playing, but cannot access the affected chat features.
What Roblox’s age-check rule covers
Roblox announced the policy in November 2025, began enforcement in select markets during the first week of December, and announced the U.S. rollout on January 7, 2026, with expansion to other regions where chat was available. Roblox’s 2025 annual report says mandatory age-check systems were implemented in all chat-enabled regions beginning in January 2026. The exact process can still vary by region and product. - Playing games: The chat age check is not a general requirement to play Roblox, subject to other account and regional restrictions.
- Experience chat and Voice chat: Require an age check. Phone verification is no longer enough to unlock Voice chat.
- Friends-related and other communication: These features are also covered by Roblox’s communication requirement.
- Direct chat: Additional age and parental-consent restrictions apply.
Users can decline the check, but cannot restore the affected communication features just by switching them on in Settings. Roblox Support’s chat guidance explains the current feature rules.
How Roblox checks age—and what the result means
Roblox’s default route is Facial Age Estimation: a camera-based process that estimates an age group rather than proving an exact birthday. Eligible users can instead verify with government-issued ID. A linked parent can update some information for a child through parental controls. These routes are not interchangeable in every circumstance.

Age groups
Roblox lists these groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. The company says groupings may vary by region and product. They are used to determine communication access and protections; they should not be read as a public display of a user’s exact birthday. See Roblox Support’s explanation of age checks.
Who can communicate with whom
Roblox says age-based rules are intended to limit communication between adults and children younger than 16. Users generally communicate with their own or nearby age groups, but the permitted range depends on the chat type, region, product, and parental settings. For example, Roblox says a user estimated to be 12 may use Experience chat with users up to age 15. Trusted Connections can allow communication between people who know each other; Roblox gives an adult communicating with a younger sibling as an example when requirements are met. Users aged 13 and older can use Trusted Connections to communicate more freely with people they know. These are not blanket permissions for every chat feature.

Rules for younger users
- Users under 9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat.
- Users under 16 need parental consent to enable Direct chat.
- Chat outside Experiences remains restricted for users under 13, subject to Roblox’s rules and parental permissions.
- Some regions require parental approval even to complete Facial Age Estimation.
How to complete Facial Age Estimation
- Log in to Roblox on a device with a working camera.
- Open Settings. On desktop, select the gear icon at the top right. On mobile, select More (…) at the bottom right, then Settings.
- Open Account info, then select Age Group.
- Choose Continue with selfie and follow the on-screen prompts.
If the device you start on has no camera, Roblox says a QR code can hand off the process to a camera-equipped mobile device. For a child’s check, the child—not the parent—must appear in front of the camera. Roblox warns that a parent using their own face could lead to an incorrect result. A linked parent account can be used for permitted corrections and parental-control changes. See Roblox’s age-check information.
How ID verification works
Users aged 13 and older can use a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card. In Settings → Account info, choose the ID option shown as Continue with ID or Verify My Age, then submit the ID and complete the requested selfie comparison. Roblox Support says it cannot manually verify IDs, remove existing verifications, or change account settings on a user’s behalf.

If you do not want to use a face check or ID
You may decline the check and continue using Roblox subject to other restrictions, but the affected communication features remain unavailable until an age check is completed. There is no Settings switch that bypasses the requirement, and phone verification does not substitute for it for Voice chat. Facial Age Estimation is the primary alternative to ID for most users, but if the estimate fails, Roblox says ID verification is required; because ID verification is limited to users aged 13 and older, that can leave a younger user with no equivalent self-service route stated in the guidance. Parents should consult Roblox’s support information for the child’s situation.
If Roblox assigns the wrong age group
Troubleshooting: use the correction path that matches the account’s age and the problem. A parent correction is limited, and an ID route is not available to users under 13.

- Estimated too young, and the user is 13 or older: use ID verification as an alternative check.
- Account is under 13: a linked parent may be able to update the child’s birthday through Settings → Parental Controls, using the pencil icon beside the child’s birthdate. Roblox says the linked parent can make this birthday change only once.
- Estimated under 13 despite a self-reported age over 13: Roblox says some users have 48 hours before the new age group is officially applied, unless they accept the result sooner.
- Facial estimate fails: Roblox says ID verification is required. Since that option is for users 13 and older, the published guidance does not establish an equivalent ID-free resolution for younger users.
Roblox also says it may ask someone to repeat an age check if behavior or other signals suggest the estimated age is significantly inconsistent. That is a stated policy, not an indication that every user is routinely rechecked. Details and limitations are in Roblox Support’s age-check guidance.

Roblox says the images and video used for Facial Age Estimation are processed by its technology vendor Persona and deleted immediately after secure processing; it also says it does not sell users’ image data. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent audit finding. The public Support material describes age-group assignment but does not establish whether a particular biometric template is stored, so it is not possible to draw a broader storage conclusion from that description.

Roblox says Persona’s models had a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18 in testing by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme. The figure is a reported test result, not a guarantee for a particular person, camera, lighting condition, or demographic. The Associated Press reported that experts have raised broader concerns about facial age-estimation reliability; Roblox’s safety chief described its system as generally accurate within one or two years for people approximately ages 5 to 25. These claims do not establish equal accuracy in every situation. (Roblox’s January announcement; Associated Press coverage.)
What parents should review
Age checks are one layer of Roblox’s safety approach, alongside filtered and monitored text and voice communications, restrictions on image and video sharing, reporting and blocking tools, and parental controls. They are designed to limit some adult–minor contact, not eliminate grooming, harassment, evasion, or unsafe interactions. Roblox itself says no safety system is perfect.
- Review the child’s communication permissions and other Parental Controls.
- Check who is listed as a Trusted Connection and whether the child knows that person offline.
- Review content maturity settings, and use blocking and reporting when needed.
- Remind children not to move conversations off-platform or share private information, and talk about grooming and scams.
- Make sure the child—not the parent—completed the child’s facial estimate.
