Roblox announced a thumbnail-personalization feature for its Home discovery page on November 13, 2024. It lets creators keep multiple thumbnails active so Roblox can adapt which image different groups of users see, rather than selecting one universal winner. The setup and availability described here are based on Roblox’s launch-era guidance; current access and interface details have not been confirmed for October 2026.
What Roblox thumbnail personalization does
The feature is for thumbnails shown on Roblox’s Home page, where users discover experiences. Creators upload image variants in Creator Hub, and Roblox’s system varies which active image appears to different user groups. The idea is to make recommendations easier for users to assess, not simply to maximize the number of clicks.
Roblox said the feature uses a multi-arm bandit approach. Unlike a conventional A/B test that typically compares variants and selects a single winner, this approach can continue showing multiple variants when they perform better with different audiences. GamesBeat’s June 18, 2025 report also described the system in those terms.
How the system distributes thumbnails
According to Roblox’s November 13, 2024 launch announcement, activating two or more thumbnails turns personalization on, with up to five active at once. The system initially divides impressions evenly. It then reallocates more impressions hourly toward variants with stronger qualified play-through rates (qPTR) for particular user groups, while continuing to test some alternatives. Roblox said statistics could appear after a few hours.

That means a thumbnail receiving fewer impressions is not necessarily a failed creative, and the variant with the strongest overall result may not be best for every audience. Roblox’s guidance was to “Keep multiple thumbnails active, instead of picking just one winner.”
What qualified play-through rate measures
qPTR is not the same as raw clicks or click-through rate. Roblox describes a qualified play as intentional engagement, distinguishing it from accidental clicks or users who leave quickly. The metric is intended as an early signal of the likelihood that someone will stay in an experience.
That distinction matters when judging a thumbnail: an image that attracts more clicks can still be less useful if those visitors do not meaningfully engage with the game.

How creators were told to set it up
Roblox’s launch instructions placed the feature in Creator Hub at Creations > Places > Thumbnails, on the Home Page tab. Those are instructions from the 2024 launch announcement, not a verified description of the current interface.

- Open Thumbnails, then choose the Home Page tab.
- Upload at least two image variants and activate the variants you want Roblox to personalize among. The launch announcement described a maximum of five active thumbnails.
- Review the statistics after they become available, and allow time for the system to gather useful signals before making changes.
Roblox’s announcement recommended keeping a diverse set active, waiting a few days before removing a clear early laggard, and testing new images after major game or content updates. These are launch-era recommendations, not independently verified current operating rules.
What results Roblox reported—and what they do not prove
In its November 13, 2024 announcement, Roblox reported an average 8.5% increase in qualified play-through rate, with some experiences seeing increases of 50%. Those are early results reported by Roblox, not independently measured benchmarks, a typical creator outcome, or a guarantee. The figures also do not establish what a creator should expect today.

Roblox’s launch FAQ said experiences with fewer than 1,000 daily active users might not see meaningful results. That is historical guidance about likely usefulness, not confirmation of a current eligibility cutoff. GamesBeat separately quoted Roblox product leadership saying tens of thousands of experiences met the minimum interested-user threshold at launch; that is an attributed statement about the 2024 rollout, not a current count.

Availability and limits of the guidance
Roblox announced the feature in November 2024, and the official launch post was updated in February 2025. The instructions above should therefore be treated as historical unless Creator Hub currently shows the same controls. Present-day availability, eligibility, and whether support has changed are not established here. Roblox’s Q2 2025 shareholder letter mentions thumbnail personalization as part of its discovery work for different user cohorts, but does not settle current access.
The launch-era GamesBeat interview also quoted Roblox product lead Chen Zheng saying ads were not supported for thumbnail personalization at that time. That 2024 statement does not establish the feature’s current ad support.
