Roblox now requires every user to complete an age check before using Communication features. The requirement covers Experience chat, Voice Chat, and friend or Party chat, and began rolling out globally in January 2026. Age checks are necessary, but they do not automatically unlock every chat feature: access also depends on age group, parental consent, privacy settings, region, Trusted Friend status, and whether an experience’s developer has enabled chat.
Here is what changed, how the current chat controls work, and what to check if Roblox chat is missing from your account.

What changed in January 2026?
Roblox now requires an age check before users can access its Communication features. That includes:
- Text chat inside experiences
- Voice Chat
- Friend and Party chat
Roblox currently lists two age-check methods: facial age estimation and ID verification. If Roblox later detects a discrepancy with the estimated age, it may request another age check.

This means an age check is now a prerequisite, not a universal chat unlock. The feature a user receives depends on their age group and other account, safety, parental-control, and regional conditions.
Roblox chat access by age

Roblox’s age-group rules are described in its current age-check guidance. They are not the same as simply entering a birth date on an account.
How to enable Experience chat
Experience chat is text chat between users in the same Roblox experience. It ends when you leave that experience, and Roblox says the system filters inappropriate content and personal information.
- Open Roblox Settings.
- Go to Privacy & content restrictions.
- Open Communication.
- Select Experience chat.
You cannot enable the setting until the account has completed an age check. Users aged 5–9 need parental consent for Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat.
Inside an experience, press the / key on a keyboard to open chat. On supported touch devices, tap the chat icon in the top-left corner. Type your message and press Enter or Return to send it.
There is one important limitation: the experience developer must enable Experience chat. Completing an age check does not make chat appear in an experience where the developer has disabled it. Roblox’s full instructions are in its Experience Chat support article.
How to use friend and Party chat
Roblox is gradually renaming the Party tab to Chat for users over 9. The rollout is regional, so some accounts still show Party. Both labels refer to the same friend-chat area. Accounts under 9 continue to see Party.

On mobile and tablet
- From the Roblox Home screen, select the Chat tab at the bottom. If your account still has the older rollout, this area may be labeled Party.
- Choose an existing conversation, or select the + button to choose friends and start a chat.
Inside an experience
If you are in an active Party, use the experience controls. Without an active Party, open the hamburger menu and select Chat.
On a computer or the web
Roblox documents friend chat through the gray chat box in the lower-right corner of the screen.
Roblox’s menu labels are currently inconsistent across its support pages and account rollouts. Depending on the account, the relevant settings may appear under Privacy & content restrictions or Privacy & content maturity.

The available choices include:
- Friends Chatt: All friends, Trusted friends, or No one
- Voice Chat with friends: All friends, Trusted friends, or No one
The support page itself spells the first setting “Friends Chatt.” Choosing No one for friend chat disables Party Chat. Choosing No one for voice disables Party Voice.
Voice Chat no longer uses phone verification
Phone verification is not a valid way to gain Voice Chat access under the current rules. Users who are age-checked as 13 or older, and who are in a supported region, can connect through the headphone icon or through an in-game Voice Chat toggle.

If the Voice Chat option is missing, check the account’s age-check status, age group, region, privacy settings, and the experience’s available controls. A phone number alone will not unlock it. See Roblox’s current Communication requirements for the supported process.

What Trusted Friends change
Trusted Friends are mutual connections who may receive broader communication access than ordinary friends, depending on age and region. The option appears only after age estimation has been completed, and availability varies by country.
To add one, open the person’s profile, select the three-dot menu, choose Add trusted friend, review the information, and select Add. If parental approval is required, choose Ask now. If no parent is linked, enter the parent’s email address and select Send email.
For users aged 12 or under, every Trusted Friend request requires parental approval. A parent’s approval request expires after 24 hours. If the other user is under 13, that user’s parent must also approve; users aged 13 or older can accept directly.
An age-checked adult aged 18 or older may add a 13–17-year-old as a Trusted Friend only through Contact importer, live QR code scanning, or invite links. Roblox documents the process and restrictions in its Trusted Friends support article.

Roblox’s newer expressive communication features have additional age and relationship rules:
- Users under 13 cannot use Chat Without Filters or Party Voice.
- Users aged 13–17 need Trusted Friend status for these features.
- An age-checked user aged 18 or older can use one-to-one expressive chat with another age-checked adult by default, without Trusted Friend status.
- An adult communicating expressively with a 13–17-year-old needs Trusted Friend status and a real-life connection method.
“Chat Without Filters” does not mean that everything is permitted. Roblox says non-Roblox URLs and text that violates its policies remain restricted, and its Community Standards still apply. Accounts can be suspended or terminated for violations. Details are available in Roblox’s expressive-chat guidance.

What Roblox filters by default
Filtered Chat remains the default standard for eligible communication, including Experience chat and Party chat. Roblox says filtering blocks inappropriate content, personal information, and instructions for moving communication off-platform.
Parental communication settings do not necessarily cover every chat system inside Roblox. Roblox states that independently developed communication features created by experience developers are outside those parental controls. Parents should therefore check the individual experience as well as Roblox’s account-level settings.

Parental-control paths
For Experience chat, Roblox documents this parent-facing route:
Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication → Experience chat
For Game chat, Roblox documents:
Settings → Parental Controls → Communication → Game chat

Roblox describes Game chat as text chat with users in similar age groups inside a specific game. Users under 9 require parental consent.
Why chat may still be missing
Complete the following checks in order:
- Confirm the age check. Communication features cannot be used until the required check is complete.
- Check the account’s age group. Younger accounts have stricter limits and may need parental approval.
- Review the correct settings menu. Look under either Privacy & content restrictions or Privacy & content maturity, depending on the current rollout.
- Check parental controls. Experience chat and Game chat may require a parent’s consent.
- Check the experience itself. The developer may have disabled Experience chat.
- Check the region. Chat, Voice Chat, Trusted Friends, and age-check behavior can vary by country.
- Check the relationship type. Some communication features require a Trusted Friend connection rather than an ordinary friendship.
- Do not rely on phone verification for Voice Chat. Roblox no longer treats it as a valid access method.
A missing control does not always indicate a broken account. It may mean that the feature has not rolled out in the account’s region or that the account is not eligible for that specific communication type.
Direct chat commands
Roblox’s current Experience Chat documentation identifies /w as the command token for direct chat. The documentation does not publish a complete argument format, so Roblox’s support material should be treated as the authority for the syntax available on a particular account or rollout.
