The system assigns users to broad age groups, limits ordinary communication between different age bands, and adds parental controls for younger users. Facial age estimation is the main route, although eligible users aged 13 and older may be able to use government-ID verification instead.
These safeguards are designed to reduce age-blind communication between adults and minors, but they are not a guarantee of identity, safety or accurate classification. They also create meaningful privacy, accessibility and appeal questions.

The short version
- Roblox announced its first teen-safety package in July 2025, including facial age estimation, Trusted Connections, parental insights, privacy tools and teen screen-time controls.
- By 2026, the system had expanded into a broader age-check requirement for chat and other communication features.
- Users are placed into age groups: 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21+.
- Communication is generally limited to similar-age groups, with controlled exceptions for Trusted Friends.
- Facial age estimation classifies an age group; it does not prove a person’s identity or exact birthday.
- Parents can manage content, communication, spending, screen time and selected activity insights through a linked parent account.
What Roblox originally announced
In July 2025, Roblox announced a package of changes intended to give teenagers more control over social interactions while giving parents better visibility into their children’s activity. The announcement included facial age estimation for age-sensitive features, age-informed communication, Trusted Connections, additional privacy settings, parental insights and teen screen-time controls.
Roblox subsequently said it would expand age estimation to all users. Age checks began rolling out for chat and age-based communication in late 2025, and Roblox announced in January 2026 that an age check would be required for chat and related communication features.

That timeline matters: the original teen-safety announcement is not the current endpoint. Roblox now uses age checks as part of a wider account, communication and content-access system.
How Roblox’s age-check system works today
Roblox describes the system as an age-assurance process. It uses facial age estimation or, where available, government-ID verification to assign an account to an age group. The platform then uses that group to determine which communication and content features are available.
The current age groups are:
| Age group | General category and access |
|---|---|
| 5–8 | Roblox Kids; age-appropriate games, with communication requiring parental permission. |
| 9–12 | Roblox Select; age-appropriate games, with similar-age chat or Trusted Friends subject to parental permission. |
| 13–15 | Roblox Select; broader communication and feature access, subject to parental and regional controls. |
| 16–17 | Roblox; broader access except 18+ games, with similar-age communication and Trusted Friends options. |
| 18–20 | Roblox; adult-age-group communication rules apply, subject to feature and regional availability. |
| 21+ | Roblox; access to age-eligible games and features. |
These are broad categories, not a promise that every conversation will involve people of exactly the same age. Roblox allows controlled exceptions through Trusted Friends, and regional rules or product-specific restrictions may change how the categories work.
Which features require an age check?
According to Roblox Support, age checks are required for several features, including:
- Experience chat.
- Voice Chat.
- Friends and other communication features.
- Restricted Content.
- Chat without filters with Trusted Friends.
- Team Create collaboration in Roblox Studio.
Roblox may add more age-checked features over time. Availability also depends on the user’s region, account settings and local consent requirements.
Phone verification is no longer enough to enable Voice Chat under the updated system. A user must complete an age check, be at least 13, live in a supported region and enter an experience that supports Voice Chat. Completing the check does not automatically turn Voice Chat on. The relevant setting is under Voice Chat controls.

On mobile, use:
More (…) → Settings → Account info → Age Group → Continue with selfie
Where available, users aged 13 and older can choose Continue with ID instead.
Facial age estimation examines facial features and assigns an age group. It does not establish a legal identity, confirm an exact date of birth or prove that the person using the account is the account holder. ID verification is a different process: it uses a government-issued document and a selfie to verify identity, age and potential fraud risk.
Trusted Connections became Trusted Friends
Roblox originally called the cross-age feature Trusted Connections. Current support material generally calls it Trusted Friends.
The feature is intended to let users aged 13 and older communicate more freely with people they know and trust, including across otherwise separated age groups. Depending on availability, it can support additional text and group-chat functions, and voice communication with Trusted Friends may be available to eligible users.
A trusted label is not proof that another person is safe. Parents and teens should treat it as a platform permission with safeguards, not as an identity guarantee. Users should still avoid sharing private information, moving conversations to unknown external accounts or assuming that an online contact is who they claim to be.

What happens if Roblox gets the age wrong?
Facial estimation can produce an incorrect result or fail to determine an age. Roblox provides several documented recovery routes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Users aged 13 and older may use government-ID verification where it is available.
- For an under-13 account, the birthday can be changed through the account’s birthday controls.
- A linked parent may be able to update a child’s birthday after facial age estimation, generally only once.
- If a user reported being over 13 but is estimated to be under 13, Roblox says there is normally a 48-hour grace period before the age group is formally changed, unless the user accepts the result sooner.
- If facial estimation cannot determine an age, Roblox may require ID verification.
- Roblox may ask a user to complete another check if it detects a discrepancy later.
Support cannot simply remove every verification or manually reset an account on request. Users should follow the documented process in Roblox’s age-change guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy: who processes the face data?
Roblox says that facial-age-estimation images and video are deleted after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store the biometric data generated by the estimation process. That does not mean no company processes facial or biometric information.
Persona processes the facial media. Roblox’s facial-media privacy notice says Persona may retain biometric data for up to 30 days after collection, unless a longer period is legally required. For ID verification, Persona processes the identity document and selfie and analyzes face geometry for identity, age and fraud checks.
Roblox’s privacy policy also says it may access ID and selfie images stored by Persona for training, product improvement and compliance purposes, while stating that Roblox does not receive the face geometry processed by Persona. Families should read both the facial-media notice and the general privacy policy before deciding which verification route to use.
Roblox also says that if facial estimation places a user in the 5–8 or 9–12 group, certain personal data, including an email address and phone number, may be removed from Roblox. That is a stated platform policy, not a guarantee that every historical identifier is immediately erased in every circumstance.

How accurate is facial age estimation?
Facial age estimation is probabilistic. Roblox has described its system as estimating ages within roughly one or two years for users in the broad 5-to-25 range, but that is a company-reported performance claim rather than an independently established guarantee for every user.
Results can be affected by lighting, camera quality, facial appearance, disability and other factors. The most important unanswered questions are how often the system misclassifies different groups of users and how frequently appeals succeed.
There are two kinds of error:
- False positive: a teenager is classified as younger and loses access to communication or other features.
- False negative: a younger user is classified into an older group and receives broader access than intended.
Requiring an age check may reduce reliance on self-reported birthdays, but it does not eliminate mistaken estimates, account sharing or deceptive behavior.

Does this make Roblox safer?
The changes address a genuine weakness in online platforms: ordinary communication can otherwise be age-blind. Age groups, parental permission and platform-level chat restrictions are intended to reduce unrestricted adult–minor contact and make age-appropriate content easier to manage.
But the system should not be described as proof that Roblox has eliminated grooming, exploitation or other abuse. Facial estimation does not verify identity perfectly. Trusted Friends create exceptions to ordinary age-group separation. Developer-created communication tools may fall outside parental settings, and users can move conversations to external services that Roblox cannot moderate.
The trade-off is that ordinary chat access now requires facial media or, for eligible users, government identification. That may be disproportionate for some families, particularly users who cannot or do not want to submit such information. The system also needs transparent regional rules, accessible appeals and independent data on misclassification and real-world safety outcomes.
