Rock Band 4 was removed from the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores on October 5, 2025. The change followed the expiration of licenses for the game’s original core soundtrack. According to the announcement quoted by Video Games Chronicle, people who already owned the game retained access to it and could download it and their songs to compatible devices; previously purchased DLC remained in their libraries.
What the delisting changed
The reported removal applied to new digital purchases of the base game on PlayStation and Xbox. It did not mean that existing owners immediately lost the game or content they had bought. Community Manager Kyle Wynn, quoted by VGC on October 1, 2025, said existing owners would “keep full access and still be able to download the game and songs to any new, compatible devices.” That statement concerns prior purchases; it does not mean new digital purchases remained available after the delisting.

The announcement tied the removal to the expiration of the original licenses for the core soundtrack, timed to the game’s ten-year mark. VGC reported that 748 tracks had been released for Rock Band 4, including 22 available at launch. These are VGC’s 2025 figures, not a current count of songs still purchasable.
What happened to DLC
The base game and its downloadable songs did not share one single removal date. The announcement said songs would be taken down as each reached its ten-year licensing mark, while previously purchased DLC would remain in owners’ libraries. As a result, availability can vary by song, platform, and region. The announcement does not establish an exhaustive current list of songs available to buy.

Harmonix had already ended new Rock Band 4 DLC releases: Product Manager Daniel Sussman wrote on January 17, 2024, that January 25 would be the final DLC release of the Rock Band 4 era. He said Harmonix had released nearly 3,000 DLC songs over the years, excluding game soundtracks from that figure. The end of regular releases and the later, song-by-song licensing removals were separate changes.
Does Rock Band 4 still work for owners?
The October 2025 announcement said people who had already bought Rock Band 4 could continue accessing it and redownload the game and songs to compatible devices. Sussman had also written in January 2024 that “you can play the songs you own within Rock Band 4 for as long as you like.” That was a statement about owned songs, not a guarantee of future server uptime.

Online services have a separate history. In a December 14, 2022 notice about shutting down services for Rock Band 1–3 and other older titles, Epic Games explicitly said, “Rock Band 4 online multiplayer will remain available.” Harmonix likewise said in January 2024 that live services, including Rivals seasons and online play, would continue normally. Those were statements made at the time; they do not verify service status in October 2026.

What to check if you own the game
- Check the account and platform used to buy it. The announcement covers prior purchases and compatible devices, not unrestricted access across every account or platform.
- Look in your game and content library. Previously purchased game and DLC access is distinct from whether a song can still be bought today.
- Check a specific song in your regional store. Licensing removals occur song by song, so a general delisting date cannot establish current availability for every track.
- Confirm instrument compatibility before replacing a controller. The game centers on instrument play, but compatibility depends on the specific controller and platform. No particular model’s compatibility or current availability is established here.
