Rock Band VR makes guitar play feel more like performing onstage, but its loose chord system can sacrifice the precision that makes familiar songs recognizable. In GamesBeat’s 2017 review, that trade-off earned the game 80/100: an appealing VR performance fantasy, rather than a breakthrough for the series.
What changes in Rock Band VR?
Traditional Rock Band asks players to match notes on a scrolling track. Here, the view shifts to the guitarist’s position, looking out toward a stage and crowd. Instead of following a stream of individual notes, players read a horizontal song map and play chord patterns, with latitude in how they place their fingers.
That change makes the game less about reproducing a prescribed sequence and more about sustaining the feeling of playing along. The review describes head movement, guitar motion, and changes in stage position as ways to engage with the virtual concert.
Does the flexible guitar play work?
It depends on what you want from a music game. GamesBeat’s reviewer found the looser chord approach let players participate in the performance, but it could also make familiar songs sound unlike the versions they knew. Songs the reviewer did not know were more enjoyable in that respect, because there was less expectation that the performance should match a remembered recording.

That is the central trade-off: Rock Band VR emphasizes presence and physical performance over note-by-note accuracy. If faithful reproduction and the satisfaction of hitting the right notes are what you value most in traditional Rock Band, the adaptation may feel imprecise. If inhabiting the guitarist’s point of view matters more, the looseness can support the fantasy.
What hardware does the review describe?
The review describes an Oculus Touch adapter for certain Rock Band Stratocaster controllers. The adapter’s pegs fit controllers with three holes on the back of the headstock; that detail matters because the review does not establish compatibility with every controller revision.

GamesBeat’s reviewer also reports that the Touch controller could loosen or fly out during energetic movement.
