Start by identifying the symptom
Use the pattern you can observe to choose the next steps. Epic Games’ guidance treats graphics and frame-rate problems separately from crashes, while system-wide lockups may involve components beyond the GPU.
- Low FPS or stutter: Check performance timings and follow the graphics/FPS steps.
- Visual corruption or abnormal display output: Follow the graphics troubleshooting route, then consider broader hardware causes if it persists.
- Rocket League crashes or will not launch: Use the crash-specific checklist.
- The entire PC freezes, restarts, or reports a system error: Gather system-level evidence before attributing it to the GTX 1080.
If Rocket League has low FPS or stutters
Epic’s ordered recommendations for PC graphics problems and FPS drops are to check system requirements, update the video driver, confirm the game is using the intended GPU, update Windows, close unnecessary background applications, lower graphics settings, and adjust Windows power mode. Use Rocket League’s performance graphs
- In Rocket League, open Settings → Interface → Performance Graphs → Performance Summary.
- Play until the slowdown occurs and note whether the FPS drop coincides with elevated frame, Game, Render, or GPU timing.
- Use the timing that changes as a clue for which part of frame production to investigate—not as a pass/fail test for a particular component.
Epic defines Game timing as the game-thread time for logic and physics, Render as the render-thread time for sending commands to the GPU, and GPU as the GPU time to render. A high overall frame time can be associated with weaker hardware or resources used by other applications; high GPU time can point toward GPU performance or resource constraints. Epic notes that low FPS can cause stuttering and possible input lag. The graphs narrow the investigation but cannot establish that a component is defective. Do not infer a target FPS from the card model
Epic Games Store lists a GTX 1060 or better among Rocket League’s GPU requirements, so a GTX 1080 is above that listed GPU threshold. That comparison does not guarantee a particular frame rate or rule out trouble: the rest of the PC, settings, drivers, background load, and the card’s condition are not established by the model name. If the picture is corrupted or display output looks wrong
Begin with Epic’s graphics route: check requirements, update the video driver, confirm the correct GPU is selected, update Windows, close unnecessary background applications, lower graphics settings, and adjust Windows power mode. If the corruption persists, Epic directs players to the hardware manufacturer. NVIDIA’s general guide covers video corruption, crashes, freezes, and lockups, but cautions that CPU, memory, motherboard, or storage problems may appear under game load and resemble a graphics-card fault. If Rocket League crashes or will not start
Use Epic’s crash checklist rather than assuming an FPS bottleneck. It starts with removing software conflicts and proceeds through game, driver, and Windows checks:
- Disable mods and third-party applications, then close background applications.
- Ensure Rocket League is using DirectX 11.
- Clear the game’s cache.
- Inspect any error message for clues.
- Check that the PC meets the game’s requirements and verify the game files.
- Update the video drivers.
- If it still fails, try windowed mode and default video settings, then check the guide’s additional steps involving Xbox Game Bar and captures, OneDrive, and Windows power mode.

If the whole PC freezes, restarts, or reports an error
A system-wide failure is not the same as a game crash. NVIDIA warns that faulty CPU, memory, motherboard, hard drive, or system memory can show symptoms only during intensive applications—often games—and appear to be graphics-card trouble. Before drawing a conclusion, record the exact error, whether the problem happens in other games, and when it occurs. If available, note temperatures and timing observations and check relevant Windows logs. These details can help distinguish a Rocket League-only issue from a broader system failure; they do not diagnose a component on their own.

Check whether Rocket League has a matching known issue
Rocket League’s official Known Issues page was last updated September 25, 2026. The retrieved page material does not identify a current GTX 1080-specific issue. It lists an older stuttering issue involving very large friends lists among resolved fixes, so that item should not be treated as a current explanation.
