The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched on October 16, 2025. Their prices were still unknown when the release date was reported on August 20, 2025, but Xbox and ASUS later announced U.S. pricing on September 25: $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X.
That makes the original “price still unknown” premise outdated. These are ASUS-made Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs developed in partnership with Xbox—not traditional Microsoft Xbox consoles.

ASUS manufactures the hardware, which runs Windows 11 Home. Xbox contributes the branded interface, controls, ecosystem integration and software features intended to make Windows gaming more comfortable on a handheld.
Neither device is Xbox Series X|S hardware in a smaller case. They are Windows PCs with AMD processors and Xbox-focused software.
Hardware differences
| Specification | ROG Xbox Ally | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen Z2 A | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 16GB LPDDR5-6400 | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 |
| Storage | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD |
| Battery | 60Wh | 80Wh |
| USB connectivity | Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports | One USB4 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, plus one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port |
| Weight | 670g | 715g |
Both use a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a UHS-II microSD card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack and rear assignable buttons. Each includes a 65W charger and a stand. The M.2 2280 SSD is upgradeable.
The $400 difference is therefore not only about frame rates. The Ally X adds 8GB of memory, twice the internal storage, a 20Wh larger battery, a higher-end processor and more advanced USB connectivity. That still does not mean every game will run proportionally faster; performance depends on the game, settings and power mode. ASUS’s launch performance figures were tied to specific comparisons and should not be treated as universal results.

What Xbox adds
The handhelds include an Xbox button, Xbox Game Bar access, a Command Center button, a Library button, Xbox-style controls and an aggregated game library. They also support:
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles
- Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Xbox Remote Play from a home Xbox console
- Xbox Game Pass access
- An Xbox-oriented handheld compatibility program
Because these are Windows PCs, users can also install compatible games and launchers from Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net and other storefronts. Windows compatibility is broad, but it is not frictionless: separate accounts, launcher behavior, controller support, anti-cheat systems, drivers and manual graphics settings can all affect the experience.
How Xbox games work on the Ally
“Play Xbox games” can mean several different things:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Native Windows PC games: installed and run locally through a Windows version.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: supported purchases provide access across compatible Xbox and Windows PC versions.
- Cloud Gaming: the game is streamed over the internet rather than rendered locally.
- Remote Play: the handheld streams a game running on the user’s Xbox console.
These methods do not make every Xbox console game a native Windows handheld game. Console-only titles, unsupported PC versions and games affected by anti-cheat or launcher restrictions may require cloud streaming, Remote Play or may not work as expected.

Which model makes sense?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the lower $599.99 U.S. entry price.
- You value Windows storefront compatibility and Xbox integration.
- You mainly play less demanding games or accept lower performance headroom.
- You are comfortable using expandable storage or upgrading the SSD later.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You want the stronger processor and 24GB of RAM.
- You need 1TB of internal storage and the larger 80Wh battery.
- You value USB4 connectivity for docks and external displays.
- The $999.99 price and extra 45g of weight are acceptable.
The Ally X is the more capable configuration, but the premium is substantial. Buyers should compare it with other high-end Windows handhelds and gaming laptops rather than assuming the additional $400 guarantees a proportional increase in frame rates.
Storage, Game Pass and regional caveats
Neither SSD has its full advertised capacity available after Windows and recovery partitions. Modern PC games can also consume large amounts of space, making the standard Ally’s 512GB drive especially easy to fill. A microSD card provides expansion, but it is not identical to an internal SSD for every game or workload.
Xbox’s product page lists three months of Game Pass Premium with each purchase, described at the time as nearly $45 in value. It is promotional access, not permanent ownership of the catalog. Eligibility, redemption rules, tier names, availability and value can vary by market and change over time.
The September preorder announcement covered 38 countries, with eight additional markets listed for an October 16 launch. Retailers, delivery dates and stock were not necessarily identical everywhere, and U.S. pricing cannot be converted into guaranteed prices for other regions.
