What is the ROG Xbox Ally?
The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows 11 handheld gaming PC developed by ASUS with Microsoft. Its Xbox button, controller-first interface, Game Bar integration, and full-screen library experience make Windows easier to navigate from a handheld, but the underlying platform remains Windows.
#1 Best Overall
- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
That distinction affects what you can play. Native Windows games can run locally, including supported Steam, Epic Games Store, EA, Ubisoft, and other PC titles. Xbox Play Anywhere games with a Windows version may work across Xbox and PC. PC Game Pass provides access to supported PC games. Other Xbox games may require Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play from your console. A title that exists only for Xbox consoles does not automatically run locally on the ROG Xbox Ally.
Microsoft describes the devices and their Xbox software experience on the official ROG Xbox Ally product page. Treat “Xbox handheld” as branding and ecosystem shorthand, not as a claim that the device is a portable Xbox Series X|S.
ROG Xbox Ally: the $599.99 option
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the value model. Its Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of onboard memory, 512GB SSD, and 60Wh battery are designed for efficient handheld gaming rather than maximum performance.
It makes the most sense for players whose libraries include indie games, older AAA releases, esports titles, lighter PC games, streaming, and Game Pass games that do not demand the highest power limits. It is also the better choice if the $400 difference would otherwise be spent on games, a dock, storage, or another gaming device.
The compromises are important. Modern AAA games may require lower settings, reduced internal resolutions, upscaling, capped frame rates, or other compromises. The 512GB SSD can fill quickly once Windows and recovery data are accounted for, particularly when games can occupy tens or more than 100GB each. The 60Wh battery is respectable in capacity, but actual runtime depends on the game, brightness, refresh rate, wireless use, and performance mode.
ROG Xbox Ally X: the $999.99 premium model
The ROG Xbox Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with eight cores, 16 threads, boost speeds of up to 5.0GHz, and an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS for supported AI workloads. It also has 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and an 80Wh battery.
That configuration is aimed at modern AAA games, demanding emulation, multitasking, mods, and buyers who want more performance headroom over several years. The extra memory is useful because integrated graphics share system memory with the CPU. It is not 24GB of dedicated graphics memory, but the larger pool can reduce memory pressure compared with the 16GB model.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe 80Wh battery is 33% larger by capacity than the base model’s 60Wh battery. It does not guarantee 33% longer gaming sessions: the Ally X’s faster hardware can also consume more power, especially at higher performance limits. Its approximately 715g weight is another trade-off, although comfort is personal and cannot be determined from specifications alone.
ASUS claimed up to a 30% performance increase over the previous-generation ROG Ally X in selected games and under specified pre-release test conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal game-by-game result. Actual performance varies with drivers, power mode, resolution, settings, thermals, and the game itself.

The practical differences between the two models
Performance
The Ally X has the stronger processor and more memory, making it the better option for newer AAA games and demanding PC workloads. Both are handheld PCs with integrated graphics, so neither should be expected to render every demanding game at native 1080p and a high frame rate. The 1920×1080 display is the panel resolution; a game may render internally at a lower resolution and use upscaling.
Memory
The base model has 16GB of onboard memory and the Ally X has 24GB. Since the GPU uses shared system memory, the difference can matter in demanding games and when multitasking. Memory is not a simple post-purchase upgrade, so choosing the larger configuration is consequential if you intend to keep the device for years.
Storage
The standard Ally’s 512GB SSD is adequate for a curated library but restrictive for users who install several large AAA games. The Ally X starts with 1TB, giving it substantially more breathing room.
Storage expansion can take several forms:
- Internal SSD: potentially the fastest and cleanest solution, but it requires opening the device and checking the exact model’s service and warranty implications.
- microSD: convenient for expanding a handheld library, although performance and reliability depend on the card, game, and workload.
- External USB-C storage: useful at a desk or with a dock, but less convenient for portable play.
Do not assume that every older ROG Ally case, screen protector, dock, or storage accessory fits the Xbox-branded models. Check the exact model and regional configuration.
Battery and portability
The Ally X’s 80Wh battery is its clearest practical advantage. It gives the premium model more capacity for demanding games and higher power limits, though it does not establish a fixed number of gaming hours. The standard Ally is lighter at approximately 670g, which may matter more to people who carry the device frequently or prefer shorter sessions.
Display and controls
The displays are effectively the same on paper: 7 inches, 1920×1080, 120Hz, and FreeSync Premium. The Ally X does not buy you a higher-resolution screen. Its premium is directed mainly toward internal performance, memory, storage, battery, and chassis configuration.

What Xbox features actually provide
The Xbox-oriented software layer is intended to make controller navigation and library access easier. It does not remove every Windows complication. You may still encounter separate launchers, desktop prompts, touchscreen interactions, mouse-and-keyboard requirements, game-specific controller problems, or anti-cheat systems that do not behave correctly on a handheld PC.
Game access breaks down into several categories:
- Native Windows PC games: installed and run locally through stores such as Steam, Epic, PC Game Pass, EA, or Ubisoft Connect.
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles: supported games with a Windows PC version can share progress and purchases under Microsoft’s terms.
- PC Game Pass: provides a rotating catalog of supported Windows games, not every game available on an Xbox console.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: streams supported games over the internet rather than running them locally.
- Xbox Remote Play: streams games from a user’s Xbox console to the handheld.
- Console-only games: are not automatically playable locally simply because the device has an Xbox button.
The Xbox product page advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with purchase and describes it as almost a $45 value. Eligibility, region, activation deadlines, catalog, benefits, pricing, and automatic-renewal terms can change, so review the offer at checkout and cancel renewal if you do not want an ongoing subscription.

The global launch date was October 16, 2025, although stock, bundles, included chargers, delivery dates, and warranty terms varied by country and retailer. As of September 2026, the original pre-order window has ended. A retailer may still offer the devices, a restock, or a new reservation program, but that should be verified on the individual listing rather than assumed from the old announcement.
For official product information, use the Xbox pre-order announcement, the launch announcement, and ASUS’s product pages. Confirm the exact model number, charger inclusion, return policy, warranty coverage, delivery date, and regional pricing before paying.
Setup expectations and useful accessories
After unboxing, expect a Windows setup process rather than a traditional console-first setup. Install Windows updates, ASUS system and firmware updates, graphics drivers, and updates for each game launcher. Keep a touchscreen, mouse, keyboard, or dock available for occasional desktop tasks even though the Xbox interface is designed for controller navigation.
A suitable USB-C charger and dock can make the device more practical at a desk or TV. The exact charger supplied varies by country, region, and model, so check the box contents and use a charger with appropriate USB-C power output. A microSD card, protective case, screen protector, controller, headset, or external SSD may be useful, but none is universally required. Confirm compatibility with the specific Xbox Ally model before buying accessories designed for older ROG Ally hardware.
Should existing ROG Ally owners upgrade?
An existing ROG Ally owner should not upgrade solely for the Xbox branding. The case for upgrading is stronger if you need the Ally X’s 24GB memory, 1TB storage, larger battery, or newer processor. If your current Ally already handles your games well and you mainly want an Xbox-style launcher, the software experience alone may not justify replacing it.
The previous ROG Ally X can also be an interesting alternative if discounted. Its value depends entirely on current stock, warranty, condition, and street price; those figures change too frequently to treat a historical price as a current recommendation.
Alternatives to consider
A Steam Deck may offer a lower-cost, more console-like experience for games supported by SteamOS, but it is not equivalent in Windows compatibility or Xbox integration. Lenovo Legion Go and other Windows handhelds may offer different displays, controls, or prices. A gaming laptop or desktop may deliver substantially more performance for the same money but sacrifices the handheld form factor. Cloud gaming or Remote Play may be better value if your main objective is access to Xbox games rather than local PC performance.
Compare current prices at the time of purchase. Discounts on older ROG Ally models, Steam Deck configurations, Legion Go systems, or laptops can change the answer more than the launch specifications do.
Which ROG Xbox Ally should you buy?
- Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if your budget is around $600, you play indie or older games, you mostly play near a charger, portability matters, and you are willing to add storage later.
- Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want the best performance of the two, play modern AAA games, need 1TB immediately, value the 80Wh battery, or want more memory and performance headroom for several years.
- Choose neither if you expect every Xbox console game to run locally, dislike Windows troubleshooting, primarily play games unavailable on Windows, or already own a recent high-end handheld that meets your needs.
The $400 launch-price difference is too large to dismiss. The Ally X pays for a faster processor, 50% more memory, double the listed storage, and a 33% larger battery capacity. Those upgrades matter for demanding games and long-term ownership, but they do not make the base model a poor choice for lighter libraries. The right purchase depends less on the Xbox logo than on your games, tolerance for Windows, and willingness to trade weight and price for performance.
