Performance hardware
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the less expensive entry point, using AMD’s Ryzen Z2 A processor with 16GB of LPDDR5 memory. Its 512GB SSD is adequate for getting started, although modern PC games can consume a substantial portion of that capacity.

The ROG Xbox Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and increases memory to 24GB of faster LPDDR5X-8000. ASUS also lists an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS. The X has twice the listed internal storage capacity at 1TB and uses an 80Wh battery instead of the standard model’s 60Wh unit.
Those are meaningful hardware differences, but they do not make the X a higher-resolution version of the same handheld. The display specification is in the same 7-inch 1080p 120Hz class on both models. Actual game performance, battery life, and frame rates depend on the title, settings, power mode, and software; the available pricing research does not establish benchmark or battery-life results.
Why USB4 matters
Both systems have two USB-C ports, but the X includes one USB4-capable port. That gives the premium model more flexibility for compatible high-speed peripherals, displays, and storage devices. It is a connectivity upgrade rather than a reason to expect better image quality from the built-in screen.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally an Xbox console?
No. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 gaming PCs in a handheld form factor. Xbox branding reflects the software experience and the collaboration between Microsoft and ASUS; neither device runs only native Xbox console games through a closed console operating system.
The Xbox interface is designed to make handheld use more controller-friendly and to consolidate access to installed PC games and Xbox-related services. Depending on the game, region, subscription, and service policy, owners can use:
- PC games installed through the Xbox app and PC Game Pass where available;
- Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and other Windows PC storefronts;
- Xbox Cloud Gaming;
- Xbox Remote Play from a compatible console; and
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles that support access across eligible Xbox and Windows devices.
These are different access methods. Play Anywhere can provide a Windows version of an eligible game; cloud gaming streams a supported title from Microsoft’s servers; and Remote Play streams from the owner’s console. Xbox compatibility labels are intended to help players understand how supported games behave on the handhelds, but they do not mean every Xbox console game runs locally on the device.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 if:
- You want the lowest-cost way into the Xbox-oriented Windows handheld experience.
- You mainly play less demanding PC games, older titles, or games that already run comfortably on comparable handheld hardware.
- You are willing to manage the 512GB internal storage with a microSD card or game rotation.
- You do not specifically need the X’s larger battery, extra memory, USB4, or higher-end processor.
The standard model is not a cut-down Xbox console. It retains the same display class, Windows 11 Home foundation, Xbox-oriented controls, and access to multiple PC storefronts. Its main attraction is value: it costs $400 less before accessories, games, subscriptions, tax, or storage upgrades.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 if:
- You want the stronger processor and 24GB of memory for more demanding PC gaming or heavier multitasking.
- You want 1TB of internal storage instead of 512GB.
- You value the larger 80Wh battery, while understanding that capacity alone does not guarantee a particular runtime.
- You need USB4-capable connectivity for compatible peripherals or storage.
- You would rather pay for the higher-end configuration at purchase than upgrade or work around the standard model’s limitations.
The X’s premium is easiest to justify for buyers who will use several of those upgrades. It is harder to justify solely for the display, because the research identifies the same 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display class on both handhelds.
Current US availability and the separate X20 Bundle
In the August 12, 2026 research check, ASUS USA still listed the standard ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99. Best Buy listed the standard model at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99. Best Buy’s X listing identified the configuration as RC73XA-XB_ALLYX.Z2E.24 with 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.
Those are observed retailer listings, not a promise that stock or pricing will remain unchanged. They also describe US pricing; other countries can have different taxes, import costs, currencies, bundles, and launch timing.
Do not confuse the original ROG Xbox Ally X with the separate ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle (2026). The X20 is a 20th-anniversary product listed separately by ASUS. The reviewed ASUS pages describe a 7.4-inch OLED display, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, an 80Wh battery, and an included ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 accessory. Those pages showed a notification or starting-price presentation rather than a confirmed US retail price, so the X20’s price should not replace the original Ally X’s $999.99 price.
Accessories worth budgeting for
The handheld prices do not tell the entire ownership-cost story. Storage, protection, charging, and TV connectivity may be more useful additions than buying accessories indiscriminately.
Protection and portability
The ROG Xbox Ally premium case is a hard-shell carrying case designed to fit both ROG Xbox Ally models. Xbox’s accessory announcement listed it at a $69.99 estimated retail price and described a detachable pouch for the 65W charger. It is a sensible addition for owners who regularly carry the handheld, but check the seller’s current compatibility and price before ordering.
The dbrand Killswitch Xbox Ally case is another option. Xbox identified it as a Designed for Xbox-certified protective case with a kickstand and Travel Cover, with a $59.95 estimated retail price at preorder. It is an alternative to the ASUS premium case, not an item most buyers need alongside it.

Removable storage
A microSD card for ROG Xbox Ally X is the least invasive way to add game storage. Xbox’s announcement highlighted SanDisk cards for both handhelds in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, with quoted speeds of up to 200MB/s read and 140MB/s write. Verify the exact card model and current performance claims at checkout. Removable storage is convenient, but game-loading behaviour can differ from the internal SSD, and not every installation or workload benefits equally from the fastest advertised sequential speeds.
Internal SSD upgrades
The WD_BLACK SN7100X SSD was promoted for the handhelds in capacities up to 4TB. Xbox cited up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write for the 2TB version. The Seagate FireCuda 530R SSD was also included in the launch accessory announcement in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions.
These are not automatic plug-and-play recommendations. Before buying an internal drive, confirm the exact physical form factor, single- or double-sided clearance, firmware requirements, installation procedure, and the effect of opening the handheld on warranty or service coverage in your region. Replacing the drive also requires reinstalling or restoring Windows and games. For many owners, a microSD card is the simpler first step.
Charging, displays, and USB accessories
The ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock is intended for desk or living-room use. Xbox listed a $99.99 estimated retail price and described charging, HDMI display output, and USB-A peripheral connectivity. It can turn the handheld into a more conventional desktop or TV setup, but confirm the dock’s included power supply, display requirements, and current compatibility before purchase.
For multiplayer or docked play, the ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller is a compatible controller option with TMR joysticks, programmable rear buttons, tri-mode connectivity, and a carrying-case/charging-stand package. The cited launch material describes the controller but does not establish a verified price.

The US prices are $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X, with both launching on October 16, 2025.
