ASUS supplies the device; Xbox supplies the full-screen interface, Game Pass integration, cloud gaming, and Remote Play. At $999.99 in the US, it makes the most sense for players who want high-end Windows compatibility in a controller-first package—not for buyers expecting every Xbox console game to install and run locally.
The biggest question is not whether the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is fast. It is whether the Xbox software makes Windows handheld gaming sufficiently simpler to justify a premium over the 2024 ROG Ally X and alternatives such as Steam Deck OLED.

Verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most capable Windows gaming handhelds available, with a large 80Wh battery, 24GB of fast memory, a replaceable standard M.2 2280 SSD, a bright 120Hz variable-refresh display, and controls shaped more like a full-size gamepad than a small PC accessory.
That hardware comes with familiar compromises. The handheld weighs 715g, uses a 7-inch IPS panel rather than OLED, and still runs Windows 11 underneath its Xbox interface. Launchers, updates, drivers, desktop dialogs, account management, and inconsistent controller support have not disappeared. The Xbox branding improves access and navigation, but it does not create an Xbox operating system or solve console-game compatibility.

What the “Xbox” handheld actually is
The ROG Xbox Ally X is an ASUS-made handheld PC running Windows 11 Home. Xbox adds a controller-oriented full-screen experience that boots into a more approachable game interface, surfaces supported PC games from multiple storefronts, and connects the device to Xbox services.
Locally, games run as Windows PC games. That includes supported titles from the Xbox app, PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, and other launchers. An Xbox console game cannot simply be installed because the machine carries an Xbox logo. A game needs a compatible Windows PC version, or it must be played through streaming.
Four different ways to play an “Xbox” game
- Native PC play: Install a Windows version and run it on the handheld’s hardware.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Use a supported Windows PC version associated with your Xbox purchase or account. The handheld is still running the PC version.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Stream a supported title from Microsoft’s servers. This requires a compatible Game Pass subscription, network quality, and regional availability.
- Xbox Remote Play: Stream games installed on your own Xbox console over a network. Latency and the console’s upload connection matter.
Microsoft describes native play, cloud play, and Remote Play as separate modes in its Xbox Wire announcement. Game Pass is useful but optional for ordinary Windows gaming, and its catalog and cloud availability vary by subscription, region, and time.

Design and controls
The chassis uses contoured grips intended to resemble an Xbox Wireless Controller. That is an important distinction from many handheld PCs: the Ally X feels designed around sustained gamepad input rather than around making a miniature laptop as thin as possible.
Controls include full-size analog sticks, ABXY buttons, a D-pad, impulse triggers, two assignable rear buttons, HD haptics, and six-axis motion sensing. Dedicated Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center, and Library buttons reduce the need to reach for Windows controls during ordinary play.

The larger body can improve grip comfort by giving the hands more to hold, but 715g is still substantial. It is heavier than a typical console controller and can become tiring when supported only by the wrists. The additional mass is partly justified by the 80Wh battery and cooling hardware; it is not free portability.

The compromises are the usual handheld ones: the D-pad and stick placement will not suit every genre, buttons can be noisy, and rear buttons can be vulnerable to accidental presses depending on how a player grips the device. Those details matter more in long sessions than a processor specification does.
Display: sharp and fast, but not OLED
The 7-inch 1080p IPS display supports 120Hz refresh, AMD FreeSync Premium variable refresh, and up to 500 nits of brightness. Gorilla Glass Victus and an anti-reflection treatment add useful protection and help in brighter rooms.
At this size, 1080p is sharp, but demanding games will often make more sense at 900p or 720p—or at a lower internal resolution combined with upscaling. The 120Hz mode is valuable for lighter games and for keeping the interface responsive; it does not mean modern AAA games will routinely render at 120 frames per second on a handheld.
VRR is arguably more important than the headline refresh rate. It can make uneven frame rates feel less distracting, especially when a demanding game fluctuates below the display’s maximum. Its benefit depends on the game, frame pacing, and power profile.

The conspicuous omission is OLED. The IPS panel can be bright and practical, but it cannot provide OLED’s near-black levels and contrast. Buyers choosing between this and an OLED handheld should decide whether higher Windows performance and compatibility matter more than display quality. The lack of OLED is a trade-off, not proof that the screen is poor.
Performance: the chip helps, but the settings still matter
The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme gives the Ally X a higher performance ceiling than the 2024 ROG Ally X. In practice, the result depends heavily on whether the device is plugged in, which power profile is selected, the game’s engine, and the chosen resolution.
Silent, Performance, and Turbo-style profiles involve a basic trade-off: lower power produces less noise and longer battery life, while higher power can improve frame rates at the cost of heat, fan noise, and endurance. Native 1080p is not always the best target. A well-tuned 900p or 720p mode with a stable frame cap can look better in motion than a higher-resolution setting with erratic frame pacing.
ASUS claims up to a 30 percent performance increase over the 2024 ROG Ally X in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages, using its own 1080p, default-settings, Turbo-mode conditions. That is a vendor-controlled comparison, not a universal performance guarantee. Results will differ in ray-traced games, CPU-heavy open worlds, esports titles, and older or indie games.
Upscaling and frame generation can make a low-power handheld feel faster, but they do not create the same image quality or input response as native rendering. Frame-generation results should be judged alongside base frame rate and 1% lows, not average FPS alone. Fan noise, surface temperature, and performance per watt are equally important when the device is used away from a charger.

- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
The sensible comparison with the 2024 Ally X is therefore not “new chip versus old chip” in isolation. Both devices already offer 24GB of memory, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, and a 120Hz 1080p display. The newer model’s justification rests on processor performance and efficiency, its physical and input changes, and the Xbox software layer—not on a larger battery or more memory.
Battery life: a large battery, not unlimited endurance
The 80Wh battery is one of the Ally X’s strongest features, but a large battery cannot make high-wattage AAA gaming last all day. Battery life varies dramatically with game, brightness, wireless activity, frame cap, resolution, and power mode.
ASUS says the newer processor can deliver up to twice the battery life of the 2024 Ally X in a specific Hollow Knight: Silksong comparison at 720p, a 60-FPS limit, low graphics, and Silent mode. That is a tightly defined test condition, not a general runtime promise.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a meaningful comparison, battery results should be separated into light indie play, typical 15W-class gaming, high-performance 25–30W gaming, video playback, standby drain, and cloud gaming. Charging time and whether the 65W adapter can sustain maximum performance are also relevant. Cloud gaming may reduce local processor load, but Wi-Fi use still affects endurance, and network quality becomes part of the experience.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: the Ally X has more endurance headroom than many smaller handheld PCs, particularly at modest power levels. Expect demanding games to consume the battery quickly, and treat every runtime claim as valid only with its settings attached.
The Xbox Full Screen Experience is the real differentiator
The software aims to hide the least pleasant parts of Windows handheld use. The device can boot into a controller-oriented Xbox interface instead of presenting the desktop and taskbar as the first thing a player sees. The interface provides access to Xbox and PC games, Game Bar controls, handheld settings, and supported libraries from multiple stores.
Microsoft says the experience can minimize background activity and defer non-essential tasks so more resources are directed toward gameplay. That is a sensible design goal, but it should not be confused with replacing Windows. The desktop remains available—and remains necessary for some installations, launchers, settings, updates, and troubleshooting.
The important test is the complete loop: first-boot setup, Microsoft and ASUS updates, account sign-in, Game Pass installation, launching a Steam or Epic game, waking from sleep, opening the on-screen keyboard, and escaping to the desktop when controller navigation breaks down. Armoury Crate Special Edition and Xbox controls also need to coexist without making basic power or performance changes confusing.
When the full-screen interface works, it gives Windows handhelds a more console-like entry point. When a launcher opens a desktop window, an update interrupts play, or a game ignores controller navigation, the underlying PC complexity becomes visible again. The experience is best described as controller-first Windows, not Xbox OS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility: broader than SteamOS, but not friction-free
Windows gives the Ally X access to a wider range of PC launchers and games than SteamOS in some cases, including titles whose anti-cheat systems do not support Linux. That advantage is real, but “Windows compatibility” does not guarantee that every game behaves perfectly.

- Anti-cheat, DRM, launchers, drivers, overlays, and account requirements can still prevent a game from working correctly.
- Library aggregation does not necessarily produce identical controller navigation across Steam, Epic, Xbox, and other storefronts.
- Game Pass local installation depends on a PC version and the relevant subscription or purchase rights.
- Cloud gaming depends on catalog eligibility, subscription, region, and network latency.
- Remote Play depends on the home Xbox’s network and the quality of the connection to the handheld.
This breadth makes the Ally X a better fit than a Steam Deck for a player whose library is spread across Windows-only launchers. It also means accepting more launcher and maintenance behavior than a tightly controlled console interface requires.
Storage, ports, and desktop use
The replaceable M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 SSD is a practical advantage. A buyer can replace the internal drive with a larger compatible NVMe drive rather than treating the original capacity as permanent. The process still involves opening the chassis and either cloning Windows or reinstalling it; it is not risk-free, and careless work can damage clips, cables, or fasteners or complicate warranty service.
The device includes two USB-C ports, a UHS-II microSD slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The USB4 port supports DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0 and is described as Thunderbolt 4 compatible. The second USB-C port also supports DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0. Confirm the port and dock specifications before planning a multi-display or high-bandwidth setup.
A basic USB-C dock can provide a monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, and storage. An ASUS dock may offer a better physical fit and predictable power delivery, but a proprietary dock is not inherently required. The optional ROG XG Mobile is a different category: it is an external-GPU solution, not a sensible purchase for someone who merely wants to connect a monitor.
Docking turns the Ally X into a usable compact Windows PC, but it does not turn it into a gaming desktop. External-monitor resolution, simultaneous USB bandwidth, display-output reliability, controller pairing, and power behavior all become additional variables. Xbox has also described docking improvements—including big-screen gaming, Auto SR, controller pairing, and optimized display output—as features being developed or refined, so current firmware matters.
AI and Auto SR: capability versus availability
The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme includes an NPU, and Microsoft has announced features such as system-level Automatic Super Resolution and AI-generated gameplay highlight reels. Those announcements should not be treated as proof that the NPU automatically improves every game.
Readers should distinguish between features available in the installed software, features delivered through an update or preview, and features announced for the future. Auto SR may require particular drivers, games, or software support, while other AI functions may arrive later or change before broad release. The NPU is hardware potential; it is not a universal performance switch.
How it compares
ROG Ally X (2024)
The older ROG Ally X is the most important alternative. It already has 24GB of RAM, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, and a 120Hz 1080p display. If discounted, it is likely the better value for buyers who do not need the newer processor, revised chassis, or Xbox Full Screen Experience. The new model is more compelling for a first-time buyer who wants the latest efficiency and Xbox integration.
Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED offers a simpler, more console-like software experience and a superior OLED display. Its lower peak performance and more limited Windows-game compatibility make it less suitable for players who require Game Pass PC, Windows-only launchers, or particular anti-cheat games. Choose it for ease of use and display quality; choose the Ally X for Windows breadth and performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLenovo Legion Go and larger Windows handhelds
A larger-screen Windows handheld can be preferable for games and desktop tasks where screen size matters. The trade-off is usually more weight, different ergonomics, and another manufacturer-specific software layer. The Ally X’s appeal is its controller-like grip and Xbox-oriented interface rather than maximum screen area.
Base ROG Xbox Ally
The cheaper ROG Xbox Ally is aimed at lighter games, streaming, and buyers who want the Xbox interface without the flagship price. ASUS lists it with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a 60Wh battery. The X model’s extra memory, storage, battery capacity, and processing headroom are meaningful for demanding AAA games and longer-term use, but not every buyer needs them.
Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?
- Xbox and Game Pass users: You want a controller-first route into PC Game Pass, cloud gaming, and Remote Play, while understanding that cloud and console access are separate from native local play.
- Windows-first PC gamers: Your library spans Steam, Xbox, Epic, and other launchers, and broader compatibility matters more than a perfectly console-like OS.
- Performance-focused handheld buyers: You are comfortable adjusting TDP, resolution, upscaling, and frame caps to balance smoothness, noise, and battery life.
- Dock users: You want a portable PC that can also drive a monitor and peripherals, without expecting it to replace a full gaming desktop.
Who should not buy it?
- 2024 Ally X owners: The upgrade is most defensible if you specifically want the newer processor or Xbox interface. The battery, memory, storage, and display fundamentals are already similar.
- OLED-first buyers: A Steam Deck OLED or another OLED handheld may provide a more rewarding image even if it gives up Windows performance or compatibility.
- Console-only players: This is still a Windows PC. Updates, launchers, accounts, and troubleshooting remain part of ownership.
- Value shoppers: A discounted 2024 Ally X or the base ROG Xbox Ally may offer more sensible value, depending on the games you play.
Game Pass is an optional recurring service, not part of the handheld’s permanent hardware capability. The Microsoft listing includes a promotional three-month offer, but subscription terms, catalog, and cloud access can change. Check the current Game Pass page before treating it as part of the purchase calculation.
