Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X for the best all-round handheld gaming PC. It is lighter, easier to hold, has an 80Wh battery, strong Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme performance, simpler Xbox-first software, and a lower reported US price. Choose the Lenovo Legion Go 2 instead if its 8.8-inch OLED display, detachable controllers, kickstand, Hall-effect sticks, or higher-capacity configurations matter more than weight, price, and simplicity.
This is a 2025 launch-year comparison using current information available through August 18, 2026. Prices and availability can change, and Legion Go 2 specifications vary by market and SKU.

Design and portability
The Ally X is the substantially easier device to carry and hold. Its 715g chassis is roughly 205g lighter than the complete Legion Go 2 measured by Windows Central. ASUS uses contoured grips inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers, full-size analog sticks, impulse triggers, haptics, two assignable rear buttons and a six-axis IMU. That conventional integrated layout suits long sessions in bed, on a train or on a sofa.

The Legion Go 2 is a larger, more modular system. Its controllers detach, and the screen has a built-in kickstand, so you can play on a desk or table without holding the display. The controllers alone were listed at about 210g. That changes the calculation for tabletop play, but handheld mode still requires carrying and supporting the larger 920g assembly.
Who benefits from the Legion design?
- Players with larger hands or who prefer larger grips.
- People who play at a table, use the kickstand, or share local multiplayer sessions.
- FPS players who want the controller’s mouse-like functionality.
- Anyone who dislikes keeping a screen attached to both hands.
Display: Legion Go 2 is the clear winner
The Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch OLED is the most visible reason to pay extra. Its 1920×1200 resolution, up-to-144Hz refresh rate and VRR provide more screen area, higher contrast, deeper blacks and more vivid color than the Ally X’s 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS panel. RPGs, strategy games, text-heavy interfaces and emulation benefit especially from the larger canvas. OLED can also make games look better when you are sitting farther away in tabletop mode.
The Ally X display is not poor. It is a competent 120Hz, 500-nit IPS panel with FreeSync Premium/VRR, Gorilla Glass Victus and an anti-reflection treatment. Its 16:9 aspect ratio is familiar, and 1080p requires fewer pixels than the Legion’s 1920×1200 native mode. That can reduce rendering demand in games where the GPU is the limiting factor.
OLED still involves trade-offs: it costs more, may draw more power depending on brightness and content, and any long-term image-retention risk cannot be reduced to a guaranteed rate without a verified durability study. The Legion also cannot drive every demanding game at native resolution and 144Hz, so the panel’s capability is not the same as a universal frame-rate advantage.

Performance: close enough to be a near tie
Both compared premium configurations use eight CPU cores, 16 threads and 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units in a roughly 15–35W operating range. The Ally X carries the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme name, while the Legion Go 2 Windows model uses Ryzen Z2 Extreme. At the same wattage, the label alone does not predict a dramatic gaming difference.

Windows Central found the Ally X narrowly ahead in several CPU and GPU tests, while the Legion Go 2 had a faster SSD and a marginally better overall system benchmark. Those mixed results make “Legion wins performance” too broad. Cooling, firmware, memory allocation, drivers, game profiles and screen resolution can matter as much as the processor branding.
How to make a fair game comparison
- Use the same TDP, graphics preset, upscaling mode, frame-generation setting, refresh-rate mode, driver and game version.
- Test demanding AAA games at 720p or 800p where appropriate; use 1080p on the Ally X or 1200p on the Legion only when each GPU has enough headroom.
- Record average FPS alongside 1% lows, frame-time consistency, fan noise, surface temperature and battery drain.
- Do not compare native 1920×1200 Legion results directly with 1920×1080 Ally X results without noting that the Legion renders more pixels.
The Ally X’s NPU enables AI-related features such as Auto Super Resolution in supported software, but it is not an automatic FPS boost in every game. Xbox describes Auto Super Resolution as an NPU-related preview feature, with further capabilities dependent on software and availability: Xbox details.
Battery life: capacity and runtime tell different stories
The Ally X has the larger battery at 80Wh, compared with 74Wh in the Legion Go 2 configuration covered by Windows Central. Both compared devices include a 65W adapter. Capacity gives the Ally X more energy reserve, but it does not prove longer gaming runtime.
Windows Central reported better gaming battery life for the Legion Go 2 in its testing despite the smaller battery. That result is a reminder that runtime depends on the game, TDP, display brightness, resolution, VRR, refresh rate, Windows power mode, firmware and whether the test uses Windows or SteamOS. Without identical, repeatable settings, a single runtime number is not a fair universal verdict.
Controls, comfort and tabletop play
The Ally X feels more like a traditional controller attached to a compact PC. Its integrated grips and lower mass reduce wrist fatigue for many people, though comfort remains hand-dependent.

The Legion Go 2’s TrueStrike controllers detach and its kickstand supports tabletop play. Reported Hall-effect joysticks are designed to reduce the traditional potentiometer drift mechanism, but they do not make drift impossible. Detachment also enables a controller-only setup when the screen is supported separately, and the FPS-style mode gives the Legion a use case the Ally X does not replicate without accessories.
Windows and Xbox usability
Both primary models are Windows 11 handheld PCs, so they can run Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox PC games and ordinary desktop software. Windows also means launchers, updates, pop-ups, desktop dialogs, sleep/wake problems, text entry and game-specific controller mapping remain possible on either device.

Game Pass access depends on the user’s subscription and region. Check the exact Legion Go 2 SKU before buying: if it uses SteamOS rather than Windows, storefront and anti-cheat compatibility changes. Kernel-level anti-cheat, launchers, DRM, mods and overlays can require workarounds or may reject Linux-based environments.

The Ally X includes a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and is explicitly positioned as easier to upgrade. The Legion Go 2 comparison used M.2 2242 storage, with some configurations reaching 2TB, but described internal replacement as less upgrade-friendly. Both devices support microSD expansion.

A 1TB drive can fill quickly with modern AAA installations. A fast, compatible microSD card works well for less demanding games, emulation libraries and archived installs, but should not be expected to match internal SSD loading performance. Before replacing an SSD, confirm the exact length and interface, clearance around the heatsink and shielding, the Windows recovery image, and regional warranty terms. Opening the device can also disturb screws or thermal pads and may require a full operating-system reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPorts, docking and external displays
The Ally X has USB4 Type-C with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0, a second USB-C port, a UHS-II microSD reader, 3.5mm audio, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. Xbox specifically promotes enhanced docking for big-screen play: see the official connectivity information.
The Legion Go 2’s advantage is less about simply connecting a monitor and more about the complete flexible setup: kickstand, detachable controllers and a large OLED screen. For either device, budget for the dock, charger, external display, keyboard, mouse, case and any additional controllers you actually need. A docked desktop setup can erase part of the Ally X’s price advantage.
Price and value
Windows Central reported US pricing of $999.99 for the Ally X, $1,049.99 for a starting Legion Go 2 configuration and $1,349.99 for a higher configuration. These are comparison prices, not a guarantee of August 2026 retailer pricing, sales, open-box pricing, regional availability or current stock. Compare matching RAM and SSD capacities rather than placing a 24GB/1TB Ally X against a 32GB/2TB Legion solely by product name.

- You want the larger 80Wh battery reserve and easier M.2 2280 replacement.
- You mainly want strong AAA performance rather than a higher native display resolution.
- Your budget is closer to the reported $999.99 US price.
Buy the Lenovo Legion Go 2 if:
- The 8.8-inch OLED’s contrast, size and refresh rate are worth paying for.
- You regularly play tabletop, docked or social games.
- You want detachable controllers, a kickstand and Hall-effect sticks.
- You need a particular premium SKU with up to 32GB RAM or 2TB storage.
- You accept greater bulk and a reported price reaching $1,349.99.
Final verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X wins for most buyers and is the better balanced handheld PC. It delivers near-tied performance in a lighter, more comfortable body, with a larger battery, easier internal storage upgrades, Xbox-oriented software and a lower reported entry price.
The Lenovo Legion Go 2 wins the display and versatility categories. Choose it when the OLED panel, detachable controls, kickstand, tabletop mode or higher-capacity configuration is the reason you are buying a premium handheld. The right 2025 winner therefore depends on whether you value everyday comfort and value or a larger, more flexible visual experience.
