The original Lenovo Legion Go remains the more adaptable handheld: its 8.8-inch screen is larger, and its detachable controllers add a trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode. Neither wins every category, and the available testing does not establish a definitive real-world battery-runtime winner.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 vs Lenovo Legion Go at a glance
These handhelds target different priorities. The X20 is a newer, efficiency-focused design built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB of memory and an 80Wh battery. The original Legion Go uses the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform, 16GB of memory and a 49.2Wh battery, but counters with a physically larger display and controllers that can be removed from the main unit.

What the hardware difference means
The X20 uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 24GB of LPDDR5X. The original Legion Go uses the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform and 16GB of LPDDR5X. That gives the X20 50% more listed memory capacity, which can help a handheld keep more demanding games, background services and higher-resolution assets in memory. It does not, by itself, guarantee a 50% frame-rate increase; processor architecture, power limits, cooling, drivers and game settings all matter.

The Legion Go’s Z1 Extreme is still a high-performance handheld platform. The important distinction is that the available evidence does not provide a test of both devices in the same games, at the same wattage, resolution and driver versions. It is therefore accurate to call the X20 the newer and better-equipped performance platform, but not to assign it a precise percentage lead over the original Legion Go.
Published X20 results
PC Gamer tested the X20 at 35W while plugged in, using 1080p and medium settings. These results describe that test configuration, not a universal guarantee for every game or a battery-powered profile.
| Game and settings | Upscaling | Average FPS | 1% low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p medium | Off | 26 FPS | 19 FPS |
| Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p medium | On | 40 FPS | 35 FPS |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p medium | Off | 42 FPS | 28 FPS |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p medium | On | 58 FPS | 40 FPS |
| F1 24, 1080p medium | On | 85 FPS | 61 FPS |
Upscaling makes a large difference in these examples: it raises the average in Black Myth: Wukong from 26 to 40 FPS and in Cyberpunk 2077 from 42 to 58 FPS. The 1% lows also improve, indicating fewer severe frame-time dips in the tested scenes. Those gains come from rendering internally below the output resolution, so image sharpness and fine detail can change with the selected upscaling method.

There is no matched original-Legion-Go result in the cited PC Gamer table. Do not take the X20 figures and subtract a presumed percentage for the Legion Go. The two systems can run at different power limits, and the Legion Go’s larger, higher-resolution panel may encourage a different rendering resolution. If you need a strict head-to-head frame-rate decision, compare both units using the same game build, graphics preset, upscaler, output resolution, power mode and driver version.
For a buying decision based on the available evidence, treat the X20 as the safer choice when your priority is a newer platform and more memory. Treat the Legion Go’s performance as capable but not numerically ranked here against the X20.
Controls: integrated Xbox layout versus a modular PC-style toolkit
What the X20 changes
The X20 keeps both controllers attached to the chassis and uses an Xbox button layout. Its controls include TMR (tunnel-magnetoresistance) sticks, impulse triggers, a transforming D-pad, refined bumpers, rounded ABXY buttons and rubberized grips. Integrated controls generally make the device feel like one object: there is no controller rail or separate piece to secure when you pick it up.

Tom’s Guide reports that the X20 moves the bumper-button position to make pressing easier and rounds the ABXY profile. The D-pad can rotate between a four-way and an eight-way configuration. Four-way input favors precise cardinal directions, while eight-way input is intended for games that benefit from diagonals, including some platformers, retro titles and fighting games. The mechanism is a physical control choice, not a software remap.

Impulse triggers are designed to provide variable feedback for supported games, while TMR sensors measure stick movement with magnetic technology. The presence of those parts does not predict your personal comfort: hand size, grip pressure and the distance to each button still determine whether the X20 feels natural.
Why the Legion Go feels different
The Legion Go’s controllers detach from the handheld. Each includes a Hall-effect stick, and the right controller adds a trackpad and mouse wheel. A switch enables FPS mode, allowing the separated controller arrangement to act more like a mouse-oriented input system when the unit is supported in its stand. Programmable buttons add another layer of customization.
This layout is useful when Windows navigation, strategy games, shooters or desktop applications are part of your routine. You can put the screen on a table, use the controllers independently and use the trackpad or wheel for pointer-heavy tasks. The same flexibility introduces more parts to carry and set up, and the complete device is less compact than a conventional fixed-control handheld.
Which control approach suits which games?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Console-style play from a couch or bed | X20 | Integrated Xbox-style controls and rubberized grips keep the input surface unified. |
| Four-way precision or eight-way fighting-game diagonals | X20 | The D-pad physically switches between four-way and eight-way modes. |
| Mouse-like pointer control without a separate mouse | Legion Go | The detachable controller includes a trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode. |
| Playing with the screen propped up | Legion Go | Detached controllers let the screen and controls occupy separate positions. |
| Fewest pieces to lose in a travel bag | X20 | The controls remain attached to the handheld. |
Display: OLED contrast on the X20, more physical area on the Legion Go
X20’s 7.4-inch OLED
The X20 has a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED panel running at 120Hz, with HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR). OLED pixels can switch off for very dark scenes, so black levels and contrast are a major part of the experience. Xbox describes it as a “pixel perfect 7.4” OLED 120Hz display.” Tom’s Guide’s hands-on comparison with the non-OLED Xbox Ally X observed deeper blacks and stronger color impact, while noting that laboratory measurements were still needed.
VRR can help smooth uneven frame delivery by matching the panel’s refresh behavior to the game’s output within its supported range. HDR can add highlight and shadow information in games mastered for it, although the result depends on the title, tone mapping and the panel’s brightness. The 1080p resolution also gives the X20 a straightforward target for demanding games: the PC Gamer results above were recorded at that output resolution.

Legion Go’s 8.8-inch high-resolution LCD
The original Legion Go uses an 8.8-inch high-resolution LCD with a high-refresh display. The cited Lenovo specification does not state the exact resolution or refresh rate in the material available for this comparison, so those figures should not be inferred from the X20’s 1080p/120Hz numbers.
The Legion Go’s panel is physically larger. That extra area can make small desktop text, inventory screens and strategy interfaces easier to read, and it gives detached-controller use more of a small-monitor feel. The trade-off is a larger handheld envelope and a display technology that does not provide the per-pixel black-level behavior of OLED.
Choosing by viewing distance
- Choose the X20 if contrast, HDR, VRR and a compact 7.4-inch OLED matter more than maximum screen area.
- Choose the Legion Go if you often read desktop interfaces, manage files or play games with dense menus at arm’s length.
- Do not assume the larger Legion Go panel automatically produces a sharper image; its exact resolution and refresh specification must be checked for the particular configuration.
Battery: the X20 stores substantially more energy, but capacity is not runtime
Rated capacities
Xbox and ASUS list an 80Wh battery for the X20. Lenovo’s 2023 datasheet lists 49.2Wh for the original Legion Go. On capacity alone, the X20 stores about 63% more energy (80Wh versus 49.2Wh). That is a meaningful advantage before considering power-management settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Capacity is not the same as hours of play. Runtime also changes with processor power mode, game load, frame-rate cap, display brightness, HDR, refresh behavior, wireless activity and battery condition. A demanding game at a high power limit can consume the X20’s larger battery quickly; a capped indie game can make either device last longer.
What has and has not been measured
The available evidence does not provide a controlled runtime test of the exact X20 against the original Legion Go. Tom’s Guide measured 2 hours 15 minutes for Legion Go 2 and 3 hours 14 minutes for the ROG Ally X in its own PCMark gaming test, but those are different models from the two devices in this title. Those figures must not be presented as the battery life of the original Legion Go or the X20.
The practical conclusion is narrower and more reliable: the X20 has considerably more stored energy and is therefore better positioned for endurance, but no exact runtime winner can be declared from these specifications alone.

Battery questions to ask before buying
- Will you play demanding AAA games, or mostly lighter games that draw less power?
- Do you expect to use the display at maximum brightness and refresh rate?
- Are you comfortable carrying a charger, or is the largest possible internal battery your priority?
- Will you play plugged in often? The published X20 benchmarks were recorded while plugged in at 35W, so they do not represent battery-mode performance.
Ergonomics and portability
The X20’s controls, grips and battery are integrated into one chassis. Xbox describes its design as having balanced weight distribution, and the rubberized grips are intended to reduce slip during longer sessions. Without a cited weight or dimensional comparison, it is not possible to declare one device objectively lighter or smaller.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Legion Go’s detachable controllers change how you carry and use it. They can be removed for tabletop play, but a travel setup must account for the main unit, both controllers and any support accessories. Detachment also adds a connection mechanism and more opportunities for a piece to be left behind. In return, the system can serve as a handheld, a propped-up screen with wireless-style controls or an FPS-oriented setup.
Consider your storage method as carefully as your hand comfort. A sleeve designed for a fixed-control handheld may not accommodate the Legion Go’s separated parts, while a case with controller pockets can add bulk. The X20’s unified shape is simpler to place in a bag, but its 7.4-inch screen gives up the Legion Go’s larger viewing area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage, expansion and ports
X20 capacity
The X20 specification lists a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and a MicroSD Express slot. A 1TB internal drive is useful for several large PC games, but modern installs can still consume it quickly. MicroSD Express offers an expansion path for additional titles and media; verify that any card you purchase is explicitly compatible with the slot and the device’s supported standard.
Legion Go capacity
Lenovo lists configurations up to 1TB for the original Legion Go, with microSD expansion. Because “up to 1TB” covers more than one configuration, check the exact capacity of the unit being offered rather than assuming every Legion Go has the maximum drive.
USB-C connectivity
The X20 lists USB4 and USB 3.2 USB-C connectivity. Those standards can matter for docks, external storage and display accessories, but the capabilities of a particular port still depend on the connected device and cable. Lenovo’s cited Legion Go specification confirms USB-C connectivity but does not state the exact standards in the supplied material. If you plan to use a dock, external monitor or high-speed drive, verify the port specification for the exact model and test the required video, data and power functions together.

Which handheld is better for your use?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X20 when these priorities dominate
- You want the newer AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform and 24GB of LPDDR5X.
- You prefer integrated Xbox-style controls rather than detachable parts.
- OLED contrast, HDR and VRR matter more to you than having the largest panel.
- You want the larger 80Wh battery capacity, while understanding that capacity does not establish a guaranteed runtime.
- You play games where a configurable four-way/eight-way D-pad and impulse triggers are useful.
- You want a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and MicroSD Express expansion as listed.
Choose the original Lenovo Legion Go when these priorities dominate
- An 8.8-inch display is more valuable to you than OLED black levels.
- You want controllers that detach for tabletop play or more flexible positioning.
- A trackpad, mouse wheel, programmable buttons and FPS mode are important for desktop navigation or mouse-oriented games.
- You prefer Hall-effect sticks and the Legion Go’s modular control design.
- You are willing to accept a 49.2Wh battery and evaluate endurance through your own settings and games.
- You need microSD expansion and USB-C connectivity but do not require the X20’s specified USB4 port.
A practical five-step buying method
- Decide how you hold the device. If the controls must stay attached and ready, start with the X20. If you regularly play with the screen propped up or separated from the controls, start with the Legion Go.
- Set your display priority. Select the X20 for OLED contrast, HDR and VRR. Select the Legion Go for the larger 8.8-inch viewing area.
- Set a performance expectation. The X20’s published 35W results show that modern games may require upscaling at 1080p for a smoother experience. Do not convert those figures into a Legion Go estimate without a matched test.
- Check your battery habits. If you spend long periods away from outlets, the X20’s 80Wh capacity gives it a stronger starting position. If you mostly play plugged in, controls and display may matter more than capacity.
- Confirm the exact configuration. Verify the Legion Go’s SSD size, the seller’s model year and the port/card standards before purchase. Confirm that accessories such as docks, storage cards and cases fit the chosen handheld.
Common comparison mistakes
Using another model’s battery test
Legion Go 2 and ROG Ally X results cannot stand in for the original Legion Go and X20. Even within one product family, a different processor, display and battery changes the result. Use cross-model runtime figures only when the test explicitly includes the exact devices and the same workload.
Comparing FPS without matching conditions
Average FPS is affected by resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, frame generation, power limit, driver and game patch. The X20’s published numbers are 35W plugged-in measurements at 1080p medium. A Legion Go result recorded at another wattage or resolution would answer a different question.
Assuming battery capacity equals hours
The X20’s 80Wh rating is a substantial hardware advantage over 49.2Wh, but it does not predict an exact number of gaming hours. Brightness, refresh rate and game load can outweigh a capacity difference in a particular session.

Choosing controls from a feature checklist alone
TMR and Hall-effect sticks, impulse triggers, a transforming D-pad, a trackpad and FPS mode describe capabilities. They do not replace trying the grip, button reach and stick placement. If possible, test the actual unit or buy from a seller with a practical return policy.
Verdict
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if you want the most modern specification in this comparison: Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of memory, a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED with HDR and VRR, integrated Xbox controls and an 80Wh battery. Its published 35W results demonstrate credible 1080p performance, especially when upscaling is enabled.
Buy the original Lenovo Legion Go if the 8.8-inch display and detachable-control system solve problems the X20 does not. The trackpad, mouse wheel, programmable buttons and FPS mode make it unusually adaptable for desktop interaction and mouse-oriented games. Its 49.2Wh battery and older platform mean you should not select it expecting the X20’s capacity or memory advantage.
The right choice is therefore determined less by a single FPS number than by whether you value the X20’s newer, higher-capacity integrated design or the Legion Go’s larger screen and modular controls.
