Short answer: A strict roguelike follows Rogue’s core run structure: procedurally generated spaces, permadeath, turn-based grid play, demanding resource management and systems that support multiple solutions. A roguelite keeps the repeated-run format but adapts or drops several of those traits, most notably by letting selected rewards—such as currency, upgrades, characters, weapons or story access—survive death. The distinction is a debated spectrum, not a universal pass/fail test.
Why the roguelike–roguelite boundary is disputed
The two labels describe related design traditions rather than two legally defined genres. “Roguelike” began as a description of games that closely resembled Rogue, while “roguelite” became useful for games that borrowed the repeated-run structure without adopting every traditional feature. As developers have experimented with real-time combat, platforming, deck-building, shooting and other formats, the vocabulary has stretched.

Steam’s 2022 explanation notes that the strict definition is debated and that “roguelike” is often used as an umbrella term. Cloudfall Studios has likewise argued that a narrow checklist can exclude games that clearly belong to the modern family. In practice, players use the words in two overlapping ways: one emphasizes historical fidelity to Rogue, and the other uses “roguelike” for almost any game built around randomized runs and repeated attempts.
That is why a game can be called a roguelike in a store tag, a roguelite by its developers and “rogue-inspired” by a reviewer without any of those descriptions being entirely irrational. The most useful approach is to describe the mechanics directly, then use the label as a shorthand.

The historical anchor: what Rogue established
Rogue launched in 1980 with randomly generated dungeon levels, increasing difficulty and permadeath, according to Steam’s historical account. A run created a temporary character moving through a changing dungeon, and death ended that character’s attempt rather than returning the player to an ordinary checkpoint.
That structure made every decision consequential. Exploration, combat, item use and retreat were part of one continuous problem. Because the next dungeon layout and many encounters could not be memorized in advance, players had to manage uncertainty as well as their character’s immediate statistics. The tradition that followed treated procedural variation and the loss of the current run as central, not decorative.
Modern games may preserve only some of that structure. A title can generate a new map after each death but use real-time combat, unrestricted movement and a large permanent upgrade tree. It may feel “roguelike” because the run loop is familiar, yet it is much closer to the roguelite end of the spectrum when measured against Rogue’s original design assumptions.

At the International Roguelike Development Conference in 2008, attending developers described eight design parameters now known as the Berlin Interpretation. Steam reproduces these as a reference for discussing how closely a game resembles the classic form:
| Parameter | What it means in play |
|---|---|
| Random map generation | Levels, rooms or encounters are generated with meaningful variation rather than following one fixed layout. |
| Permadeath | Death ends the active character and current run, requiring a new attempt. |
| Turn-based combat | The game advances in discrete turns, allowing deliberate choices instead of continuous action. |
| Grid-based movement | Movement takes place across a tile or cell grid, as in a traditional dungeon crawler. |
| Complexity | Interacting rules create several viable ways to solve situations, rather than one intended tactic. |
| Non-modal actions | Actions remain broadly available through the same world state instead of forcing frequent switches between separate modes. |
| Resource management | Health, equipment, food, ammunition, identification, time or other limited resources shape decisions. |
| Hack-and-slash combat | The game centers on direct character-versus-enemy encounters rather than being primarily a puzzle or abstract simulation. |
The Berlin Interpretation is best treated as a diagnostic checklist, not a law. A game does not become invalid because it misses one parameter, and satisfying every item does not settle every argument about genre. The checklist is valuable because it reveals which parts of the classic structure a game retains.
Permadeath: the defining consequence of a failed run
Permadeath means that death ends the active character and the current run instead of sending the player back to an ordinary checkpoint. The player starts a new run, while the precise save and recovery rules depend on the game.

In a strict roguelike reading, the run’s character, inventory, map state and immediate advantages are generally reset. A sword found on level five is gone when that character dies; the dungeon must be generated again; and the next character begins without the previous run’s tactical position. This is different from a conventional game-over screen that reloads the last save with the same equipment and map progress.
Permadeath does not necessarily mean that every form of knowledge disappears. The player can remember enemy behavior, learn which items are dangerous, improve route planning and develop a better understanding of the rules. That personal knowledge is outside the character’s inventory and is therefore not a persistent in-game upgrade.
Games also implement death with different technical safeguards. Some allow a single save that is deleted when loaded; others permit a run to be abandoned but not rewound; still others use a limited recovery mechanic. These details affect how severe the loss feels, but the central question remains whether the active run can be restored as an ordinary checkpoint.
Progression: what survives after death
Progression is the clearest practical difference between strict roguelike design and common roguelite design. In a roguelite, the run ends, but selected rewards survive. Those rewards can include currency, permanent stat upgrades, newly available characters, weapons, items or story access. Steam describes roguelites as borrowing roguelike elements more loosely and often preserving points, upgrades or objects after death.
Persistent progression changes the purpose of a failed attempt. A player may lose the current map and temporary equipment but return with currency that unlocks a new weapon, a stronger starting option or another piece of narrative. The next run is therefore not identical to the previous one, even if the player dies at the same location.
Persistence exists on a spectrum. Some games retain only cosmetic unlocks or a record of achievements; others provide powerful statistical bonuses that substantially increase later attempts. A game can also mix systems: temporary items reset, a limited set of permanent unlocks remains, and story discoveries open new routes. Calling such a game a roguelite communicates the repeated-run structure, but it does not specify how generous or influential the permanent systems are.

A strict roguelike can still contain long-term player progression in the form of knowledge, improved technique or a best-score record. What it generally avoids is a permanent in-game advantage that makes the next character stronger because the previous character died.
Roguelike and roguelite compared by design axis
| Design axis | Strict roguelike tendency | Common roguelite tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Run reset | Death removes the active character, inventory, map state and immediate advantages. | Death removes the current run but selected rewards persist. |
| Persistent rewards | Usually absent as in-game power; learning remains with the player. | Currency, upgrades, characters, weapons, items or story access may carry forward. |
| Combat timing | Often turn-based, allowing a decision before the world advances. | Frequently real-time, though turn-based roguelites also exist. |
| Movement | Usually grid-based. | Often free-moving, platform-based or otherwise non-grid. |
| World generation | Procedural maps and encounters are central to replayability. | Procedural variation is common but can be combined with handcrafted rooms or routes. |
| Systems | Deep interactions, identification, inventory choices and scarce resources create multiple solutions. | Systems may be streamlined around builds, upgrades, combat choices or short runs. |
| Relationship to Rogue | Attempts to preserve more of Rogue’s dungeon-crawler structure. | Uses Rogue’s run-and-retry idea while adapting the presentation or rules. |
These are tendencies, not mandatory specifications. A real-time game can still have severe run loss and meaningful resource management; a turn-based game can still offer extensive permanent upgrades. The table helps explain why two games with random levels may feel fundamentally different.
Is every game with procedural levels a roguelike?
No. Procedural generation is only one parameter. A game might randomize maps while keeping checkpoints, a permanent character, fixed equipment and no meaningful run reset. In that case, procedural generation changes the environment but does not create the complete roguelike loop.

Ask what the generation is doing. If it merely produces cosmetic variation around a conventional campaign, the game may be procedurally generated without being roguelike. If each generated run combines uncertain levels with irreversible death, scarce resources and interacting systems, the resemblance is stronger. If permanent upgrades also shape every later attempt, “roguelite” is usually the more precise description.
Randomness alone is not enough because the genre depends on the relationship among randomness, consequence and decision-making. The player must be making choices under a changing set of conditions, and those choices must matter because the current run can be lost.

- Identify the unit of play. Does the game organize progress into self-contained attempts that end in victory, defeat or abandonment?
- Check what death removes. Is the active character and immediate inventory gone, or can an ordinary checkpoint restore them?
- List what survives. Separate player knowledge from in-game rewards. Note whether currency, upgrades, characters, equipment or story flags carry into the next attempt.
- Examine movement and combat. Determine whether play is turn-based and grid-based, real-time and free-moving, or a hybrid.
- Measure procedural variation. Are maps, encounters and item placements meaningfully different, or are only minor details randomized?
- Look for interacting systems. Inventory limits, identification, hunger, equipment durability, status effects and environmental interactions can create multiple solutions.
- Describe the result precisely. Use “strict roguelike” when the game closely follows the classic structure, “roguelite” when it keeps the run loop while loosening several traits, and a more specific phrase when neither label explains the design well.
This method avoids treating a marketing tag as a technical verdict. It also lets you explain mixed cases, such as a turn-based game with permanent unlocks or a real-time game with no persistent power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy designers add persistent progression
Permanent rewards reduce the cost of failure. A player can lose a run and still feel that the attempt contributed currency, an unlock or story progress. That structure can make repeated play more welcoming, especially when a game expects many deaths before the player understands its systems.
Persistence also gives designers a way to expand the range of available strategies. New characters, weapons or items can create different starting conditions, while story access can reveal information that changes how a player interprets later runs. The trade-off is that permanent power may soften the tension that comes from beginning each attempt with equal resources.
A strict reset creates a different experience. Every run asks the player to solve the immediate situation with what is available, and success depends more heavily on judgment, adaptation and system knowledge than on an accumulated upgrade tree. The cost is that a difficult failure can erase a long attempt without granting an in-game advantage.

“Does roguelite always mean permanent upgrades?”
No single rule governs every use of the word, but persistent rewards are the most recognizable roguelite trait. Some games retain only unlocks or story access, while others preserve substantial statistical improvements. Check exactly which rewards survive instead of assuming that every roguelite has the same progression model.

Usually it means the active character and current run end. It does not necessarily erase the player’s account, achievements, discovered information or any progression the game deliberately marks as permanent. The relevant question is whether the defeated run can be restored as an ordinary checkpoint.

“Can a roguelike be real-time?”
Under the strictest Berlin Interpretation reading, turn-based combat is one of the eight parameters, so a real-time title is not a close match to the classic form. In everyday usage, however, many people use “roguelike” broadly for real-time games with procedural runs and severe death consequences. “Roguelite” or “rogue-inspired” may communicate the hybrid more clearly.
“Can a roguelite have no permanent statistical upgrades?”
Yes. Persistent characters, items, cosmetic unlocks or story access are still forms of progression, even when the player’s numerical power does not increase. The important distinction is that something selected by the game survives the end of the run.
“Are the Berlin parameters a pass/fail test?”
No. The developers’ 2008 list is a reference framework. Steam presents it as part of an explanation whose strict definition remains debated, and Cloudfall Studios has criticized overly narrow readings. Use the parameters to describe similarities and differences rather than to invalidate a game by counting missing features.
A practical vocabulary for players and developers
Use “strict roguelike” when you want to emphasize Rogue’s traditional combination of procedural dungeons, permadeath, turn-based grid movement, resource pressure and systemic complexity. Use “roguelite” when the game clearly borrows the repeated-run structure but introduces persistent rewards or departs substantially from the classic movement and combat model. Use “rogue-inspired” when the connection is recognizable but neither label captures the design accurately.
When recommending or describing a game, add the mechanics that matter to the reader: “real-time combat with permanent upgrades,” “turn-based grid exploration with full run resets,” or “procedural levels but checkpoint saves.” Those details answer the practical questions that a genre label cannot settle by itself.
