Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a 3D remake of the 1993 Japanese RPG, built around ruling the Empire of Varennes across generations. You choose successors, inherit knowledge and abilities, and decide which objectives—and which of the Seven Heroes—to pursue first. Its open structure makes it less about following one fixed route and more about understanding how succession and combat systems work before making your own choices.

What is Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven?

Square Enix describes Revenge of the Seven as a complete 3D remake of the original Romancing SaGa 2, first released in Japan in 1993. The remake rebuilds the original’s pixel-art world in 3D and retains familiar SaGa mechanics such as Glimmers and Formations while reworking battles and character growth. It also adds selectable difficulty, Japanese and English voice acting, and a choice between original and rearranged music. Square Enix’s official game page

The story follows the Emperor of Avalon, ruler of the Empire of Varennes. The Seven Heroes were once celebrated as saviors, then feared and banished by the Ancients; they return seeking vengeance against the empire. Nintendo’s US product page

How do generations and succession work?

The empire’s story unfolds across successive generations rather than through one permanently controlled hero. When a new emperor takes the throne, the player chooses from eligible characters. Inheritance magic allows knowledge and abilities to pass to the successor, connecting the reigns instead of treating each new emperor as a complete reset. Nintendo and Steam describe the generational premise and inheritance system.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven (PS5)
  • Rule and expand the Varennes Empire across multiple generations, engage the Seven Heroes in a battle that spans millennia, and make choices that drastically alter the course of your journey in this non-linear RPG!
  • Characters & Imperial Succession - Join forces with characters from over 30 different classes featuring a wide variety of professions and races, each with their own favored weapons, unique abilities, and effective tactics.
  • Free-Form Scenario - The game presents a unique story structure that offers a vast array of narrative experiences in response to your choices and which objectives you tackle first—from how you expand the Empire to what order you challenge the Seven Heroes.
  • Combat - The strategic turn-based battle system of the original has been further enhanced to a timeline system.
  • Graphics - The original 2D pixel sprites are now modeled in full 3D while retaining their charming, familiar appearances based on the beautiful concept illustrations by Tomomi Kobayashi.

That structure is part of the game’s central decision-making: you are guiding a dynasty and its empire, not just assembling one fixed party for a linear campaign. The official descriptions establish that knowledge and abilities can be inherited, but do not specify every inheritance rule or the consequences of individual succession choices.

Is there one correct route through the story?

No single mandatory order is established in the official descriptions. The scenario is free-form: your choices affect which objectives you tackle, how the empire expands, and the order in which you confront the Seven Heroes. That makes the experience responsive to player decisions, but it also means a fixed route should not be assumed to be necessary.

There is not enough established here to provide a verified quest-by-quest walkthrough, a complete missables list, or definitive claims about which choices lock or unlock specific content. Treat route advice that promises a universal optimal order cautiously unless it explains the conditions behind that recommendation.

  • Team up with characters from over 30 classes, each with preferred weapons, unique skills and effective tactics
  • Your actions and decisions will dramatically affect the course of the story
  • The original's strategic, turn-based combat system has been further improved with a timeline system
  • Three difficulty levels are available: relaxed, normal or difficult

How does combat work?

Combat is turn-based, with a timeline that helps you plan around the order of actions. Square Enix describes the remake as enhancing the original’s strategic turn-based battles with this timeline system. Use it to inform your turn planning; the official descriptions do not establish exact timing formulas or every effect that can alter turn order. Nintendo

Glimmers: learning abilities in battle

Glimmers are a returning SaGa mechanic through which characters can learn new abilities during battle. They are a core part of character development, so battles are not only a test of the abilities you already have: they are also where characters may discover new ones. Square Enix

Formations: benefits from party arrangement

Formations let your party’s composition confer benefits in battle. Consider them alongside the characters and abilities you bring, rather than treating party order as a purely cosmetic choice. The sources establish the role of Formations but do not identify a universally best formation or an optimal party for every situation.

United Attacks: a remake addition

United Attacks are combination attacks involving members of your retinue, added in the remake. They give the party another way to coordinate its offense alongside individual abilities. The official descriptions do not provide enough detail to prescribe a specific combination as best in all circumstances. Nintendo

Character growth

Square Enix says character growth has been reworked for the remake. That broad description signals changes beyond the original, but it does not establish enough detail to support a fully optimized build guide. Be wary of treating one set of builds as definitive without evidence tied to the remake’s version and conditions. Square Enix

Which difficulty should you choose?

Nintendo lists three settings and describes their intended emphasis as follows. These are the publisher’s descriptions, not an independent difficulty test. Nintendo

Setting Nintendo’s description A reasonable starting point
Casual Focused on the story, with less emphasis on battle. Choose it if you want combat to play a smaller role in your experience.
Normal A balanced option recommended for veteran RPG players. Consider it if you want the intended balance and have experience with RPGs.
Hard (Classic) A challenge for players seeking the original’s tougher experience. Choose it if you specifically want that more demanding framing.

The official descriptions do not establish how much a setting changes particular encounters or whether difficulty can be changed later. Check the game’s current in-game options if that matters to your decision.
