Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a strong entry point for players who enjoy tactical, systems-led JRPGs and the freedom to shape a campaign. Its generational empire story and flexible battles are distinctive strengths; its unconventional design and less compelling story presentation make it a weaker fit for anyone seeking a tightly directed, character-led adventure.
What kind of game is Revenge of the Seven?
Revenge of the Seven is a full 3D remake of the 1993 role-playing game Romancing SaGa 2, not a new numbered sequel. The original sold more than 1 million copies in Japan upon its 1993 release, according to Square Enix; that figure refers to the original game, not the remake.

How does the generational succession system work?
You rule as Emperor of Avalon, defending and expanding the Varennes Empire across successive generations. Rather than following one hero through a fixed sequence, the game passes the imperial role to an eligible successor. You can recruit more than 30 classes, then choose the next emperor from the available successors.

#1 Best Overall
- Rule and expand the Varennes Empire across multiple generations, engage the Seven Heroes in a battle that spans millennia, and make choices that drastically alter the course of your journey in this non-linear RPG!
- Characters & Imperial Succession - Join forces with characters from over 30 different classes featuring a wide variety of professions and races, each with their own favored weapons, unique abilities, and effective tactics.
- Free-Form Scenario - The game presents a unique story structure that offers a vast array of narrative experiences in response to your choices and which objectives you tackle first—from how you expand the Empire to what order you challenge the Seven Heroes.
- Combat - The strategic turn-based battle system of the original has been further enhanced to a timeline system.
- Graphics - The original 2D pixel sprites are now modeled in full 3D while retaining their charming, familiar appearances based on the beautiful concept illustrations by Tomomi Kobayashi.
The campaign is free-form: decisions about developing the empire and when to confront the Seven Heroes influence the journey. That structure makes the dynasty itself central to play. The story advances through changes in leadership and the empire, rather than relying only on one protagonist’s personal arc.
What are battles like?
Combat is turn-based and tactical, with actions organized on a timeline. The remake retains signature SaGa systems and adds United Attacks, so success depends on learning how party setup, character development, and battle decisions work together.
Formations and party tactics
Formations arrange the party and provide tactical effects. Choosing one is more than a cosmetic preference: it shapes how your group approaches a fight.
Rank #2
- Team up with characters from over 30 classes, each with preferred weapons, unique skills and effective tactics
- Your actions and decisions will dramatically affect the course of the story
- The original's strategic, turn-based combat system has been further improved with a timeline system
- Three difficulty levels are available: relaxed, normal or difficult
Glimmers and United Attacks
Characters can learn abilities during battle through Glimmers. United Attacks add another way to coordinate the party. Together, these systems reward players who pay attention to how fights unfold and adapt their approach.

Critical reception is positive overall, with reviewers highlighting the generational premise, tactical combat, and modernization while noting that the storytelling is less effective and the series’ unusual design will not suit everyone. GameSpot scored its Nintendo Switch review 8/10 in October 2024, calling it “This polished remake of an obscure JRPG gem is the most inviting way to dive into Square Enix’s long-running SaGa series.” The same review page displayed a 79 Metascore when accessed; that is a dated snapshot, not a permanent score.
Those strengths and caveats point to a clear fit: this is most appealing when you enjoy learning interconnected systems and making choices in an exploratory campaign. Its flexible structure is less likely to satisfy players who want a tightly guided plot or a strongly character-led adventure.
