Contemporaneous reporting said the forum was expected to remain live, so “shutting down” describes the end of submissions and the move toward archive status—not the immediate disappearance of every site function.

The announcement, reported by Time Extension on August 2, 2024, was attributed to administrator Nightcrawler. He wrote, “It’s been a good near 20 year run, but for various reasons it’s time to wind things down.” He also said, “The site achieved almost everything it set out to do, and far exceeded it.” Those are the administrator’s statements, not independent assessments of the site’s history or impact.
Why did the administrator say it was winding down?
Nightcrawler cited the growing difficulty of sustaining the site: a heavy workload and around-the-clock activity, submission queues, copyright takedowns and legal burdens, and resource abuse by bots and other users. He also said efforts to find a successor had not worked out. These are his stated reasons, as summarized in the Time Extension report, rather than independently adjudicated findings.

Archiveteam’s Romhacking.net page describes the site as “Partially saved” and links to the announcement and a separate archive of downloads.
That establishes that material was released for preservation; it does not establish that every entry is present, that all files are easy to locate, or that they will remain continuously accessible. Treat the Internet Archive as an archival source, not as proof of a complete, fully searchable replacement for the original site.
Where can readers get ROM hacks and fan translations now?
The available information does not verify the current operating status or catalog of ROMhack.ing or any other possible successor. No definitive replacement can be named on that basis.
