The Tomatometer and the audience score answer different questions. The Tomatometer is the percentage of reviews from Rotten Tomatoes-approved professional critics that the site classifies as positive. The audience score—now commonly labeled the Popcornmeter—is based on user ratings. Neither percentage is an average grade out of 100, and a 90% score does not mean critics or viewers awarded an average 9 out of 10.
To read a score responsibly, check who was counted, how many people or reviews are included, the average rating when it is displayed, whether the audience figure is verified, and what representative reviews actually say. A gap between critics and viewers is a clue about different expectations, not proof that one group is right.

What the two Rotten Tomatoes scores measure
Rotten Tomatoes places two percentages beside many films and television shows, but they are built from different populations and different rules.

|---|---|---|---|
| Tomatometer | Tomatometer-approved professional critics and publications | The share of counted reviews classified as positive (Fresh) | It is not the critics’ average numerical grade |
| Audience score / Popcornmeter | Rotten Tomatoes users who rate or review a title | The share of qualifying user ratings that meet the site’s positive threshold | It is not the average star rating of every viewer |
| Verified audience score | Users whose ticket purchases were confirmed | A user-rating result tied to verified ticket transactions | Verification describes how the purchase was confirmed, not whether the opinion is accurate |
Because the groups, collection methods and classifications differ, comparing the numbers as if they were two exam marks creates a false equivalence. A critic may be evaluating craft, structure or ambition, while a viewer may be reporting whether the film delivered the entertainment or emotional payoff they wanted.

How the Tomatometer is calculated
1. Rotten Tomatoes approves the critic source
Only reviews from a Tomatometer-approved critic or publication enter the Tomatometer. Rotten Tomatoes’ criteria emphasize professional status, approval and dedicated reviewing work. A review posted by an unapproved commentator does not count simply because it is widely read.
2. Each review is classified as Fresh or Rotten
The site collects the approved reviews and labels each one Fresh or Rotten. This is a classification of the review’s overall recommendation, not a conversion of every critic’s private score to a common 100-point scale. A critic who gives a film a 3 out of 5 and a critic who gives it an A-minus can both be counted as positive if the review supports a Fresh classification.
3. The percentage is the share of Fresh reviews
The Tomatometer is the percentage of counted reviews that are positive. If 90 of 100 eligible reviews are Fresh, the score is 90%. That means approximately nine in ten counted critics responded positively under Rotten Tomatoes’ classification. It does not mean the critics’ average opinion was 90 out of 100, nor that every critic rated the film exactly nine out of ten.

The denominator matters. A displayed percentage should be read alongside the number of reviews. A 95% result from a small initial sample is less informative than a 95% result supported by hundreds of reviews, because each additional review can move a small sample much more sharply.
How the audience score, or Popcornmeter, is calculated
User ratings are a separate population
Rotten Tomatoes’ audience system allows users to rate and review titles. An audience review is a text review submitted by a Rotten Tomatoes user; the audience percentage summarizes user responses rather than professional-critic reviews. The people represented may differ from the critics in age, fandom, viewing habits, expectations and reasons for watching.

The popcorn threshold
Rotten Tomatoes says a full popcorn bucket appears when at least 60% of users rate a title 3.5 stars or higher. Thus, a full bucket indicates that at least six in ten qualifying users reached that star threshold. It does not say that the typical viewer gave the film exactly 3.5 stars, and it does not reveal how far above the threshold the positive ratings were unless the page also shows an average or distribution.
Audience displays and labels can change as Rotten Tomatoes updates its product and methodology. Treat the label shown on the title page as the current presentation, and note when you accessed it if you are recording a score for a review, database or article.

Why a 90% score is not a 9/10
Both percentages are proportions of people or classifications, not averages of points.
- Tomatometer 90%: about 90% of counted approved critic reviews were classified Fresh.
- Popcornmeter 90%: about 90% of qualifying user ratings met the audience system’s positive standard.
- Average rating: a separate statistic, shown where Rotten Tomatoes provides it, that describes the mean of numerical ratings. It should not be substituted for either percentage.
Consider two hypothetical films. Film A has 90 Fresh reviews out of 100, producing a 90% Tomatometer, but the Fresh reviews may be mildly positive while the Rotten reviews are strongly negative. Film B could also show 90% while most critics give it enthusiastic top marks. The identical percentage hides that difference. The review excerpts and any displayed average rating supply the missing texture.
The same issue applies to viewers. A 90% audience score could result from many people choosing 3.5 stars and a smaller group choosing five stars, or from a distribution clustered near five. The percentage alone cannot tell you the intensity of approval.

How to read the information beside a score
Before drawing a conclusion, open the score details rather than stopping at the headline number.
| Detail to check | Question it answers | Why it changes the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Number of critic reviews | How large is the professional sample? | Small samples are more volatile; a high percentage supported by hundreds of reviews is more established. |
| Number of audience ratings | How many users are represented? | A percentage based on a small number of ratings can shift quickly as more viewers participate. |
| Average rating, when shown | How strong are the ratings on average? | It adds intensity that a positive/negative percentage cannot show. |
| Top Critics information | How did a selected group of prominent approved critics respond? | It can reveal whether the broad critic result is also reflected among the designated Top Critics. |
| Verified status | Were ticket purchases confirmed for the audience ratings? | It distinguishes a verified purchase-based audience signal from an unverified user result. |
| Review excerpts | What specific strengths and weaknesses are people describing? | Text reveals genre expectations, common objections and reasons behind the number. |
Do not treat any one of these details as a replacement for the score. They are context that prevents an apparently precise percentage from being overread.
What a critics–audience gap can mean
A difference between the two scores is not automatically an error, manipulation or verdict against one side. It is evidence that the two populations responded differently. Use the following patterns as prompts for investigation, not as universal rules.
Critics high, audience lower
Professional reviewers may have valued formal execution, originality or thematic ambition while general viewers wanted a different kind of experience. A film connected to an established property can also disappoint its existing fan base even when critics praise its construction or ideas. Read audience comments for recurring complaints about tone, pacing, characters or fidelity to expectations, and check how many ratings produce the lower figure.
Audience high, critics lower
Viewers may prioritize entertainment, familiarity or emotional payoff that reviewers judged less favorably. A straightforward crowd-pleaser can therefore earn strong user enthusiasm without winning broad critical approval. Look for whether audience reviews repeatedly describe a satisfying genre experience, and whether the critic sample is large enough to support a stable conclusion.

Both scores high
High results from both groups indicate broad agreement that the title works for the people represented by each score. They still do not guarantee that you will enjoy it: your genre preferences, tolerance for length or interest in the subject may differ from both populations.
Both scores low
Low results suggest limited enthusiasm among critics and users, but inspect the review count and genre context before treating that as a universal warning. A deliberately abrasive or unconventional film may be a poor match for broad audiences while appealing to a narrower group.
Fresh, Rotten and popcorn badges are thresholds
Rotten Tomatoes says a title is Fresh when at least 60% of critic reviews are positive; the site displays a red tomato. The threshold is categorical: a film at 60% and a film at 95% are both Fresh, even though their margins of approval are very different.
For the audience display, Rotten Tomatoes says at least 60% of users rating a title 3.5 stars or higher produces a full popcorn bucket. That icon is likewise a threshold badge, not a ranking from one to five buckets.

The site also describes Verified Hot as an audience badge that complements Certified Fresh and reflects updated audience and critical-sentiment criteria. Because Rotten Tomatoes can revise labels and display rules, read the definition attached to the badge on the current site instead of assuming that an older explanation still applies.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
What “verified audience” means
Rotten Tomatoes introduced Verified Ratings for users whose ticket purchases were confirmed. The verification process records where the user bought the ticket and feeds a verified audience score. This gives the score a clearer connection to people who purchased access to a theatrical showing than an unrestricted user rating would have.
Verification is about the transaction, not the quality of the opinion. A verified purchaser can still dislike a film for reasons unrelated to your taste, and an unverified comment can still contain useful analysis. When both figures are available, compare them rather than treating the verified result as automatically correct. A large difference may indicate that the broader user population includes people who did not buy a ticket, while a similar result suggests the purchase-confirmed group is responding in much the same way.
A practical method for deciding whether a movie is for you
- Start with the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter together. Note whether they are close or far apart, but do not assign meaning to the gap until you inspect the details.
- Record the sample sizes. Write down the number of critic reviews and audience ratings. A percentage with very few entries is an early signal, not a settled consensus.
- Check the average rating if it is displayed. Use it to judge intensity. Keep it separate from the percentage because the two statistics answer different questions.
- Look for Top Critics information. This helps you see whether the result among the designated group of prominent approved critics resembles the overall critic score.
- Check audience verification. Identify whether the page presents a verified purchase-based score, a broader user score, or both.
- Read representative excerpts on both sides. Find at least one positive and one negative explanation from critics and users. Focus on comments about the elements you care about: story, acting, pacing, scares, humor, effects or fidelity to source material.
- Match the evidence to your priorities. If you mainly want polished filmmaking, critic commentary may be more useful; if you mainly want an enjoyable night with a familiar genre or franchise, audience reactions may better reflect your decision. Neither preference makes the other score invalid.
- Check the access date when preserving the result. Scores can move as reviews and ratings arrive, and labels such as Verified Hot can evolve.
Worked examples without treating percentages as grades
Example: a large critic sample
Suppose a title has 450 approved critic reviews and a 78% Tomatometer. Approximately 351 reviews would be Fresh and 99 Rotten if the displayed percentage is based on those rounded counts. The useful conclusion is that a clear majority of counted critics responded positively. You still need the excerpts to learn whether that approval is enthusiastic or qualified.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Example: a small early sample
Suppose a new release shows 9 Fresh reviews out of 10 and a 90% Tomatometer on opening day. One additional Rotten review would move the simple ratio to 82%; several more could change it again. The score is real for the reviews counted at that moment, but its stability is limited by the small denominator.
Example: a critics–audience split
Imagine a film with an 88% Tomatometer and a 54% Popcornmeter. The numbers show that the approved critic population is substantially more positive than the users represented by the audience score. They do not establish why. Read comments for evidence of a mismatch in expectations, franchise loyalty, tone or entertainment value, and compare the number of ratings behind each percentage.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling 90% a 9/10. It confuses a proportion of positive classifications with an average grade.
- Assuming Fresh means excellent. The minimum Fresh threshold is 60%, so the badge covers a wide range of approval.
- Comparing critic and audience percentages as if they used the same voters. They do not; the populations and rules differ.
- Ignoring the denominator. A percentage without its review or rating count hides how much evidence supports it.
- Using the gap as proof of bias. A difference is a reason to read the explanations, not evidence that critics or viewers acted improperly.
- Treating verification as a truth certificate. It confirms a ticket-purchase link, not the correctness of a reviewer’s judgment.
- Freezing a score in time. New reviews, ratings and revised labels can change what appears on the title page.
Which score should you trust?
Use the score that best matches the decision you are making, then confirm it with the underlying evidence. The Tomatometer is the more relevant starting point when you want a broad signal from approved professional reviewers. The Popcornmeter is more relevant when you want to know how participating viewers reacted. A verified audience figure adds purchase-confirmed context, while the unverified audience result may represent a wider set of users.
The most reliable personal judgment comes from combining the numbers with sample sizes, average ratings where available, verification status and review text. If the two scores agree, your choice is easier but still depends on taste. If they diverge, the disagreement is useful: it tells you to investigate what each group valued and whether those values match your own.
