A July 14, 2026 report attributed a new RPCS3 developer milestone to 2,681 of 3,559 tracked games—about 75%—being rated Playable. That is a major achievement for the open-source PlayStation 3 emulator, but it does not mean 75% of every commercially released PS3 title is guaranteed to work perfectly on every PC.
The percentage refers to RPCS3’s own compatibility database and counting methodology. Its live database changes frequently, and an accessible official snapshot has shown a different figure of 69.85%. The safest conclusion is that RPCS3 has moved beyond the old 70% headline, while the exact current percentage should be checked on the official compatibility list at publication time.

What the RPCS3 milestone actually means
RPCS3 is an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. Its compatibility list records how individual games perform as the project develops.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The original 70% claim is now best understood as a historical milestone. According to GamesRadar+ reporting, RPCS3 developers said in July 2026 that 2,681 of 3,559 tracked games had reached the Playable category, or approximately 75%.
#1 Best Overall
- HDMI + Bravia Sync functionality that provides both 1080p output resolution.
- A new 33% slimmer, 36% lighter PlayStation 3 entertainment system that is also more energy efficient.
- Includes a Dualshock 3 wireless controller and a built-in 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos.
- Built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity anywhere and multiple media format compatibility.
- Free membership and access to all the events, as well as game, movie, TV and other media content available on the PlayStation Network (PSN).
That figure should be attributed to the developers rather than presented as an independently audited census of the entire PS3 library. The official compatibility page changes as new reports are submitted, game entries are updated and database categories are revised. An accessible snapshot of the page has displayed 3,615 games, 6,402 IDs and a 69.85% Playable share, so readers should not treat any single percentage as permanent.
What “Playable” means on RPCS3
RPCS3’s status labels are more precise than the casual meaning of “runs.” The emulator defines a game as Playable when it can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches.
That is a meaningful standard, but it is not a promise of flawless emulation. A Playable game may still need a patch, a particular renderer, a recent emulator build or per-game settings. Performance can also vary with the CPU, GPU, operating system, drivers, resolution, game revision and regional release.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Playable | Can be completed with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches. |
| Ingame | Reaches gameplay, but may be impossible to finish, have serious glitches or perform too poorly. |
| Intro | Displays an image or reaches an early screen but does not progress beyond menus or the introduction. |
| Loadable | Shows a black screen with a frame rate in the title bar. |
| Nothing | Fails to initialize, does not load or crashes RPCS3. |
In other words, “Playable” is much closer to “finishable under the tested conditions” than “perfectly emulated on every computer.” It also does not imply that online services, licensed content, accessories or platform-specific features are still available.
RPCS3 is not counting only unique game titles
The most important qualification behind the headline is that RPCS3 tracks Game IDs grouped by game media, not just one entry for every commercial title. The project’s compatibility documentation explains that disc and digital versions of the same game can have separate entries.
Rank #2
- New slimmer, lighter PS3 system, Wireless controller
- 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
- Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
Regional releases may also use different IDs. Depending on the database view and counting rules, the broader pool can include separate disc editions, digital editions, demos, applications and online-only software. The official list also notes that online-only games and applications are not included in every game count.
That makes “75% of PS3 games” useful shorthand for a general audience, but technically imprecise. A more exact description is: around three-quarters of the tracked RPCS3 compatibility entries were reportedly rated Playable in July 2026. That is still an impressive result, but it is not proof that 75% of every unique PS3 title, version and region has identical compatibility.
The remaining quarter still includes major PS3 games
A high overall percentage can hide important exceptions. The remaining entries are not necessarily obscure or unimportant. GamesRadar+ identified several major titles and series among the notable gaps, including The Last of Us, God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Uncharted series.
These examples were cited by that reporting, rather than by RPCS3’s compatibility page as an official explanation of the milestone. They nevertheless illustrate why a library-wide percentage cannot answer every reader’s practical question. Someone interested in one famous PS3 exclusive may have a very different experience from someone playing a less demanding title that is already marked Playable.
Why the hardest PS3 games remain difficult
The PS3’s unusual architecture is a major reason that the final difficult games can resist otherwise impressive progress. Its Cell processor combined a general-purpose Power Processing Element with specialized Synergistic Processing Elements, while the RSX graphics processor and the console’s timing and memory behavior created additional emulation challenges.
Rank #3
- Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
- When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
- 160GB system
- Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
- The best high-definition viewing experience available
Late-generation exclusives often pushed that hardware aggressively. They may depend on unusual rendering paths, tight timing, specialized workloads or system behavior that is difficult to reproduce accurately on modern PCs. This is an informed technical interpretation, not a complete official explanation for every remaining title, and individual games can fail for very different reasons.

The result is an important distinction: broad compatibility progress does not guarantee that the most technically demanding or culturally significant games will be solved first.
Will a Playable game run well on your PC?
There is no universal “RPCS3 PC” experience. Performance commonly depends on:
- CPU architecture and especially single-thread performance;
- GPU capability and the quality of its Vulkan or OpenGL drivers;
- operating system and emulator revision;
- internal resolution and upscaling settings;
- game patches and configuration recommendations;
- shader compilation and resulting stutter;
- whether the game is limited by the CPU or GPU; and
- the exact disc, digital release or regional Game ID tested.
A compatibility report may also have been made on a different RPCS3 revision from the one you are using. Start with the latest official build, current graphics drivers and default settings. Then follow the recommendations for the exact game rather than applying a generic configuration from another title.
Do not assume that a powerful graphics card alone will solve every problem. Some demanding games are CPU-limited, while raising resolution can create a separate GPU bottleneck. Nor does a Playable label promise 4K output, a locked 60 frames per second or an experience identical to original hardware.

How to check one specific game
- Open the RPCS3 compatibility list.
- Search for the exact title and note its Game ID.
- Confirm the region and whether the entry is for disc or digital media.
- Check the current status, last-tested information and any linked wiki page.
- Read the associated forum report for patches, known bugs and recommended settings.
- Compare the tested conditions with your own CPU, GPU, operating system and target resolution.
- Start with default settings before changing per-game options.
This process is more reliable than searching only for a game title and assuming that every version behaves the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What a new RPCS3 user needs
RPCS3 itself is free and open source. The project’s official Quickstart guide should be treated as the current source for hardware and software requirements rather than relying on an old universal minimum-PC table.
The basic setup is:
- Download RPCS3 from the official project site or its official GitHub releases page.
- Review the current Quickstart requirements for your operating system and hardware.
- Install official PlayStation 3 firmware through the documented process.
- Use legally obtained game discs or digital game files and any required keys.
- Find the exact Game ID in the compatibility database.
- Update RPCS3 and your GPU drivers before troubleshooting.
- Apply only patches or settings recommended for that specific game revision.
If a title fails, first test the renderer or settings listed for that entry. If you request support, RPCS3’s support guidance asks users to use an official build, update GPU drivers and provide the complete compressed log—not just text copied from the emulator window.
The legal boundary matters. An emulator, official firmware, legally obtained game discs and legally obtained digital game material are separate things. Do not download unauthorized game packages, keys or copyrighted files from ROM or piracy sites. Laws about copying, dumping and circumvention vary by location, so this is practical guidance rather than legal advice.

Is RPCS3 a replacement for a PS3?
For many games, RPCS3 can be an excellent modern way to play PS3 software, but it is not a universal replacement for the console.
Best Value
- Built-in Wi-Fi access for easy connection to gaming services and the Internet
- Built-in Blu-ray player to give you the best high-definition viewing experience and pristine picture quality
- 80 GB of hard disk storage for all your games, music, videos, and photos
- This product is NOT backwards compatible
On suitable hardware, emulation can provide higher resolutions, modern display support, graphics patches, improved frame-rate options and preservation benefits. It may also be more convenient than maintaining aging hardware or tracking down a working console.
An original PS3 remains preferable when you need guaranteed original-hardware behavior, straightforward physical-media use, a title that is not yet Playable, or platform-specific features that RPCS3 cannot reproduce. Compatibility is also separate from online-service preservation: an emulated game may boot and finish while its original servers, licenses or online infrastructure are unavailable.
The practical decision is therefore game-specific. Check the exact RPCS3 entry before buying PC hardware, and compare the cost and complexity of upgrading a computer with the value of an original console or an official remaster or port.
The bottom line on the 70% headline
RPCS3 has reached a historically important point. The old “70% Playable” headline is no longer the strongest current framing: developers reportedly put the figure at 75% in July 2026. But the percentage is based on RPCS3’s tracked entries, not a simple audited count of every unique PS3 game, and the database changes frequently.
For readers, the meaningful takeaway is not that the entire PS3 library is solved. It is that RPCS3 is now mature enough to make a large portion of the platform’s catalog practical on a suitable PC—while major exclusives, game-specific settings, hardware differences and online-service limitations still make the compatibility list essential.
