Separately, an independent developer has published an experimental RPCS3 homebrew project that they say runs on a jailbroken PS5 Pro. The two claims refer to different efforts: the project is not endorsed or supported by the RPCS3 team.
What the RPCS3 team has said about a PS5 port
Notebookcheck reports that the RPCS3 team told a fan on X that it has “no interest” in bringing the emulator to PS5. The report also says the team had previously questioned whether the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU is powerful enough for proper PS3 emulation. The opened report does not reproduce the complete original X post, so “no interest” should not be read as a detailed technical explanation or a permanent policy statement. Notebookcheck’s report is the available attribution.

What the unofficial PS5 Pro build is
Developer LavaVex published source code and build scripts for an experimental RPCS3 homebrew title. Its project repository describes RPCS3 running as a homebrew application on a jailbroken PS5, not as a Sony-approved app or an official RPCS3 release. The repository says the build is unsupported by the RPCS3 team and warns that it was tested on a single console with a handful of games; crashes, freezes, and failures should be expected, and most games remain untested.
The project’s “native” description concerns how the emulator is packaged and executed on the console. The repository says it renders through Vulkan using the PS5_Vulkan project’s RADV port, handles audio through SceAudioOut and DualSense input through ScePad, and uses RPCS3 Big Picture Mode as its frontend. That does not make it a supported or broadly compatible PS5 version of RPCS3.

- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Reported setup and game results
The developer says the tested console was a PS5 Pro running firmware 13.60 with the Relapse jailbreak, etaHEN, ftpsrv, and ShadowMount+. Those are details of the author’s reported configuration, not a general compatibility guarantee for other consoles or firmware.
| Game | Developer’s reported result |
|---|---|
| Need for Speed Carbon (BLUS30016) | Reported as fully playable at 60 fps. |
| inFAMOUS (BCUS98119) | Reported to boot and play, but stutter and fall below full speed in heavier areas. |
These are the developer’s individual reports, not independent tests or evidence about the wider PS3 library. The repository says no other games had been tried when its README was written, and it supplies no formal compatibility percentage or broader benchmark study. Check the project repository for its current documentation and status.
It is a source build, not a ready-to-install release
The repository provides source and scripts rather than a prebuilt title binary. It recommends an Arch or CachyOS Linux host, while noting that other systems may work with equivalent dependencies, and estimates roughly 20 GB of disk space for the build. Its documented installation prerequisites include a console-side FTP service and ShadowMount+. The build scripts compile dependencies and RPCS3; having a retail PS5 Pro alone is not enough to run it.

The developer’s documentation expects users to supply their own PS3 firmware, identified as PS3UPDAT.PUP, and their own game dumps. It describes copying game folders to the console or using an exFAT USB drive. The documentation warns against redistributing the combined title, firmware, keys, or games because of the licenses involved, and notes that jailbreaks, payloads, and unsigned titles carry risks that users assume.
Can it play an original PS3 game disc?
The available project documentation describes user-provided game folders or dumps and an exFAT USB drive; it does not demonstrate direct playback from a PS3 disc inserted into the PS5. A question about disc use in the project discussion is not evidence that the build reads original discs. The discussion page does not establish disc support.
Quick Recap
How to interpret the announcement
- Official plans: Notebookcheck reports that the RPCS3 team has “no interest” in a PS5 port.
- Independent experiment: LavaVex’s build is a separate homebrew project, unsupported by RPCS3.
- Hardware and software conditions: the reported run required a jailbroken PS5 Pro and a specific tested configuration, not an ordinary software installation on a stock console.
- Compatibility evidence: the repository names results for two games, with different performance outcomes; it does not establish compatibility across the PS3 catalog.
- Availability: the published materials are source and scripts, not a packaged installer for general users.
