The right answer depends first on the exact game and release you want to play, then on whether you prefer setting up an emulator on a computer or using dedicated console hardware. Check RPCS3’s current compatibility entry for your specific copy before deciding.
Start with the game you want to play
RPCS3 compatibility is not determined by a title’s display name alone. The project tracks entries by Game ID and media, so disc and digital releases of the same game can have separate records. Find the entry matching both your game and release type in the RPCS3 compatibility list, then read its current notes.

The list’s “Playable” status means a game can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches. It is a useful signal, not a guarantee that every scene, setting, or computer configuration will behave identically. The project notes that compatibility can change as development continues.
How the two options compare
| What matters | RPCS3 | Original PS3 |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An open-source PS3 emulator for computers. | The PlayStation 3 console hardware. |
| Game compatibility | Varies by game, Game ID, and release medium; check the matching current entry. | Depends on the specific game and console model; the available sources do not establish a model-by-model feature comparison. |
| Getting started | Requires installing and setting up the emulator; RPCS3 directs new users to its Quickstart Guide. | Uses console hardware rather than an emulator setup. |
| Performance | Depends on the game and computer. No current controlled comparison establishes a universal performance advantage. | No current controlled comparison establishes a universal performance advantage. |
| Buying path | Requires a computer that meets current needs; verify requirements before choosing or upgrading hardware. | A used PS3 is the direct hardware alternative; confirm the specific model and its condition before buying. |
What to expect from RPCS3 setup and computer requirements
Installing RPCS3 is only part of getting started. The project’s Quickstart Guide is the relevant setup resource. Its FAQ also points users toward setup guidance, but its system-requirement text dates to 2020 and says requirements are subject to change. Treat those older figures as historical guidance, not current minimum specifications or a safe basis for buying a computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
- When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
- 160GB system
- Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
- The best high-definition viewing experience available
Before committing to emulation, check the project’s current requirements and the compatibility notes for your game. The result depends on the title and the computer configuration; the available evidence does not support a general claim that RPCS3 is faster, more reliable, or better-looking than a PS3.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an original PS3 is the better fit
Choose original hardware if you would rather play on the console itself than install and configure an emulator. A used PS3 is the straightforward hardware route, but check that the particular model suits your intended use and that the console is in acceptable condition. PlayStation’s backward-compatibility information is a starting point for model-related questions; the available information here does not justify treating every PS3 model as interchangeable or recommending one model over another.

A practical way to decide
- Identify your copy. Note the game and whether you have a disc or digital release.
- Check the matching RPCS3 entry. Search the compatibility list by Game ID and media, and read the current status and notes.
- Check current setup information. Use the Quickstart Guide and current project requirements rather than relying on dated FAQ specifications.
- Choose based on your trade-off. If the game’s RPCS3 entry and your computer look suitable, emulation may be the more convenient route for you. If you prefer dedicated console hardware, investigate a used PS3 and verify the specific model and game requirements.
