For a first playthrough, follow the main story until a region opens up, then explore nearby quests and points of interest before moving on. Check each quest’s suggested level, and leave it for later if it looks far beyond Geralt’s current level or its fights feel punishing. There is no established mandatory order for every quest type, so treat this as a flexible, low-spoiler approach—not a completionist checklist.
Which edition of The Witcher 3 is this guide for?
As of October 7, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED says The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is available following its September 29, 2026 release. The release notice says the Remastered update includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners on the listed platforms. Check your platform and edition before relying on an upgrade or purchase detail: CD PROJEKT RED’s release notice.
This matters if you are following older guides. Remastered rearranges skills into a tree with three ranks per skill and prerequisites, and CD PROJEKT RED says the changes reset skill points. It also gives untracked quests distinct map markers that you can select to track. Older build advice may not match the current skill layout; check the in-game tree rather than copying a build blindly. See the Remastered update notes.
What quest order should a beginner follow?
Use the main story to orient yourself, but do not treat it as a reason to rush through a region. Xbox Wire’s 2015 beginner guide recommends exploring before each next phase of the plot and using each quest’s suggested level as a warning when you may be outmatched. That is useful general advice, not a fresh difficulty audit of the current Remastered release: Xbox Wire’s beginner guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Follow the main story until it opens a region and introduces its local situation.
- Before advancing to the next story phase, check nearby side quests, contracts, and points of interest. Pick the optional content that interests you; you do not need to clear every marker.
- Check the suggested level on a quest. If it is substantially above Geralt’s level or the encounter is proving punishing, leave it and do something else nearby. There is no need to grind just to force your way through it.
- Use the map to decide what to do next. In Remastered, untracked quests have their own markers and can be selected for tracking, so you can follow an opportunity without losing sight of your current objective.
Explore without turning the game into a checklist
Wandering away from roads can be worthwhile. Xbox Wire’s White Orchard example points to a settlement and a grindstone found by exploring off the road, and notes that Places of Power can improve a Sign and grant an ability point. Treat those as examples of what exploration can uncover, not as an exhaustive route or a guarantee that every detour has the same reward.
Choose a pace that suits your spoiler tolerance
For a first run, the real choice is relaxed discovery or more deliberate tracking. Exploring nearby content can reveal more of a region and its optional quests; tracking more closely can make it easier to decide what to do next. The cited guidance supports exploration and the map’s tracking tools, but it does not establish a universal missables-safe sequence. Avoid treating any elaborate community checklist as an official or required order.
How should a beginner approach combat?
Combat is real-time and rewards observation over button-mashing. Xbox Wire’s 2015 guide advises watching enemy attack patterns to learn when to block or parry, testing different Signs to discover what an enemy is susceptible to, and repositioning to improve your angle. It describes fights as fast enough to demand timing and care even at normal difficulty; use that as practical guidance from the 2015 article, not as a current balance rating.
- Watch first: notice an enemy’s attack rhythm before committing to a strike.
- Time your defense: block or parry when the attack pattern gives you an opening.
- Experiment with Signs: try different Signs rather than assuming one approach works on every enemy.
- Reposition: move to a safer or more advantageous angle when a fight turns against you.
Remastered polishes the behavior of many non-boss monsters, adds a dynamic combat camera, and improves target-lock switching. If you are overwhelmed, the update also supports a quick disengage: hold the dodge button to unlock from a target, then press sprint to run away. Button labels and mappings vary by platform, so consult the current control help rather than assuming another platform’s inputs apply to yours. The Remastered update notes describe these changes.

Find the right controls for your platform
The PS4 manual describes contextual Controls Help for combat, exploration, swimming, and horseback riding. It is a legacy manual, not a definitive mapping for every platform or the current Remastered release; use it as a pointer to the game’s contextual help, and check official support if a control differs: CD PROJEKT RED support.
Essential tips for a first playthrough
Use meditation with your current game’s rules in mind
Xbox Wire’s 2015 guide says meditation can replenish vitality and prepared potions when Strong Alcohol is available. Since that advice is older and game details can vary by version and settings, check the tutorial and your current game’s behavior if it does not match what you see.

Inspect the skill tree before spending points
Remastered changed skill prerequisites and reset skill points. Read the current tree in-game before committing to a build, especially if a guide you are following predates the update.
Adjust the experience if you want less system management
Remastered includes the optional Bard’s Ballad preset, which CD PROJEKT RED describes as reducing cognitive load by simplifying some mechanics and disabling selected features. Its listed options include a vitality regeneration boost, infinite breath, unlimited item and boat durability, and ignoring item weight. It is a configurable accessibility option, not a required beginner mode or a measure of player ability. See the Remastered update notes.

If an update or save issue gets in the way
CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 PC hotfix 5.00c notes include a save/load fix for cases where the Documents folder path contains special characters, audio and visual adjustments, and a fix restoring the ability to launch the Classic (1.32) version. The notice covers PC distribution through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC; it does not establish identical patch status on every platform. If you encounter a problem, check for the latest update on your platform and consult official support.
