In a technical presentation premiered on 4 August 2026, developer WhatCookie said the emulator could run PS3 software 60% faster while using 25% less power than the comparison point six months earlier. Those are developer-reported figures described by Time Extension on 6 August 2026, not results independently reproduced in a laboratory.
The practical takeaway is narrower and more useful: ARM64 emulation has improved substantially, but the experience still depends on the exact processor, operating-system build, emulator version and game.
Can RPCS3 run on ARM?
Yes, ARM64 support is an active part of RPCS3’s development. RPCS3 is a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. Its current project information lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, while the official site specifically showcases ARM64 and Apple Silicon work.
That does not mean every ARM computer, phone or handheld can run every PS3 title. An older official FAQ edited in April 2020 still contains x64-only and dated macOS language; it should not be used as the current description of ARM availability. The newer ARM64 and Apple Silicon showcase is the more relevant project material, and it also warns that compatibility is not universal.

How much faster is RPCS3 on ARM now?
WhatCookie’s opening statement, quoted by Time Extension, was: “Today, we’re able to emulate the PlayStation 3 60% faster while drawing 25% less power.” The comparison was between work from roughly six months earlier and the newer build presented in August 2026.

Because no independent benchmark set accompanies these figures here, they are best treated as progress indicators rather than a buying guarantee or a universal speed rating for ARM devices.
What optimization changed
The reported bottleneck was a busy-wait loop: code repeatedly checked a condition instead of sleeping efficiently. On the tested ARM setup, that polling interacted badly with the available hardware timer. The report attributes a roughly 19 MHz timer to the ARM case and contrasts it with the 2–4 GHz range cited for many x86 devices. In that specific scenario, the ARM path was described as nearly 150 times slower.

Replacing wasteful polling
According to the presentation summary, the developer adjusted waiting behavior to account for timer frequency. The work also examined the difference between x86’s Pause instruction and ARM’s Yield instruction. A later issue led to using an Instruction Synchronisation Barrier. These are implementation details from the developer’s account, not independently audited measurements, but they explain why an apparently small synchronization path could affect an emulator’s frame-time and energy behavior.
Why the gain will vary
PS3 emulation is a workload made of many subsystems. A title that spends significant time in the affected synchronization path may benefit more than one limited by graphics translation, CPU-heavy game logic, shader compilation or an unresolved compatibility problem. The reported averages therefore cannot be converted into a fixed frame-rate multiplier for the whole PS3 library.
Can an ARM handheld play PS3 games?
It can play some PS3 software if it has a suitable ARM64 build, enough CPU and GPU capability, a supported Linux or other operating-system configuration, and a game that behaves well in RPCS3. The report’s concrete test example was an AYN Odin 2 running Linux. WhatCookie reportedly chose it partly because it cost less than an ARM laptop with comparable hardware.

That is a test platform, not a universal recommendation. ARM handhelds differ in processor design, cooling, memory bandwidth, drivers, display resolution and power limits. Two devices with the same broad architecture can produce very different results. A handheld’s ability to launch RPCS3 also does not establish that a particular game will maintain playable performance.
Which PS3 games work in RPCS3?
Compatibility is game-specific. RPCS3’s live compatibility database uses several statuses:
- Playable: the game is completable with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches.
- Ingame: it reaches gameplay but has substantial problems or cannot reliably be completed.
- Intro: it reaches an introductory section but not normal gameplay.
- Loadable: it loads, yet does not reach a meaningful playable state.
- Nothing: it does not produce a usable result.
Check the exact game entry before choosing hardware or assuming that an ARM optimization applies. Statuses can change as emulator builds and game-specific fixes evolve, so a library-wide claim that “PS3 games run” is misleading.

Does RPCS3 work on Apple Silicon?
Apple Silicon is explicitly featured in RPCS3’s official ARM64 showcase, so Apple’s ARM-based Macs are part of the project’s documented ARM direction. Actual results still depend on the macOS build, the game and the emulator revision. The April 2020 FAQ’s older x64 and macOS statements predate this later project material and should be read as historical documentation, not current requirements.

- Identify the exact device and OS. Record the processor, memory, Linux or macOS distribution, graphics driver and power mode.
- Confirm an ARM64 RPCS3 build. Use the project’s current release or development documentation rather than the dated 2020 FAQ.
- Look up each game. Read the live compatibility entry and recent reports for the title you actually want to play.
- Test at the intended resolution and power limit. A result at a handheld’s lowest resolution or highest sustained power setting may not represent normal use.
- Compare like with like. For an ARM-versus-x86 judgment, keep the game, build, settings and measurement method consistent; otherwise a power or speed difference cannot be attributed confidently to architecture.
Controllers and other practical setup points
RPCS3’s controller guidance includes Sony’s DualSense among supported controller choices, and its FAQ describes local multiplayer with up to seven controllers. A controller is optional hardware and has no bearing on the ARM optimization results. Feature support remains game-specific, so do not assume every title uses every DualSense function.
What the 2026 ARM progress really means
The work closes part of the efficiency gap between ARM and x86 for RPCS3 and broadens the range of plausible devices, including Apple Silicon systems and Linux handhelds. It does not turn every ARM machine into a PS3, remove game-specific compatibility limits or make the reported 60% figure a guaranteed uplift for your library.

For a purchase or migration decision, prioritize the exact game list, current ARM64 build, sustained cooling and power behavior. Treat the headline numbers as evidence that focused emulator engineering can deliver meaningful gains—not as a blanket performance promise.

Are the 60% and 25% figures independently verified?
No. They are figures attributed to RPCS3 developer WhatCookie and reported by Time Extension in August 2026; the supplied evidence does not include an independent laboratory reproduction.
Does the Odin 2 guarantee that other ARM handhelds will run PS3 games?
