The PS3 emulator gained a controller-friendly in-game overlay, more settings that can be changed while a game is running, and the ability to create Steam non-Steam shortcuts for recognized PS3 games.
That does not make PS3 games native Steam titles, and it does not guarantee better performance or compatibility for every game. The main upgrade is usability: less dependence on a keyboard and mouse when using RPCS3 on a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, or another handheld PC.
From a feedback request to shipped features
RPCS3’s handheld initiative began on March 9, 2026, as a request for feedback about controller support and a more usable interface on small-screen devices. The developers framed it as a handheld usability project—not a compatibility update—and specifically separated it from requests for more PS3 games to work.
The announced plans included:
- A redesigned in-game home menu.
- More emulator settings that could be changed without restarting a game.
- Better mapping for a handheld’s Home, Guide, Steam, or PS button.
- An option to add PS3 games to Steam directly from RPCS3.
By early April, the work had become available in the project’s development and release history. The changes were delivered as a series of implementation updates rather than one clearly named “handheld overhaul” release. RPCS3’s release notes show work involving the home-menu rewrite, shortcut creation and removal, Steam banner generation, button combinations, dynamic resolution controls, restart support, shortcut batching, and Steam Input behavior.
For that reason, the exact labels and defaults can vary between stable releases, recent builds, and distribution packages.

The original announcement and RPCS3’s release history should be read as two stages of the same project: planned features in March, followed by working functionality by August 16.
How the new in-game menu works
On supported builds, the reported default shortcut for opening RPCS3’s in-game overlay is:
Start + SelectThis combination is useful on Steam Deck because it avoids taking over the Deck’s dedicated Steam-button overlay shortcut. The intended flow is:
- Launch a game in RPCS3.
- Press Start + Select.
- Navigate the controller-friendly home menu.
- Change an available setting or use a menu action such as restart.
- Return to the game without completely closing and relaunching the emulator.
The overlay can expose settings while a game is running, including resolution-related controls. It also supports controller-oriented navigation and button combinations. A PS button mapped to Start plus Select appears in relevant release work, although the exact behavior depends on the installed build and the handheld’s controller layer.

There is an important limitation: “change settings without restarting” does not mean every RPCS3 option is dynamically adjustable. Some settings may take effect only after a scene change, a new frame, or a restart, while others remain unavailable until the game or emulator is closed.
Steam Input, vendor overlays, operating-system remapping, and an unfocused game window can also intercept the combination. If it does nothing, first confirm that the game window has focus, then check RPCS3’s input settings, the Steam controller configuration, and software such as Armoury Crate, Legion Space, or MSI Center.
What “add games to Steam” actually means
RPCS3 is not adding PS3 games to the Steam Store. It creates non-Steam shortcuts that Steam displays in the user’s library.
The practical chain looks like this:
Steam shortcut → RPCS3 → selected PS3 gameWhen shortcut creation works correctly, RPCS3 can also provide artwork, including Steam banners in subsequent implementation work. Selecting the library entry launches the emulator with the relevant game rather than launching a native Steam version.
This is a library-management and convenience feature. It does not provide PS3 game files, firmware, encryption keys, Steam licenses, or copyrighted content. The game must already be recognized by RPCS3, and the installation still depends on the correct game data, configuration, emulator executable, and required PS3 firmware.

RPCS3 references the firmware file PS3UPDAT.PUP for commercial games. Users should obtain firmware and game data legally and follow the project’s official quickstart documentation.
Steam Deck, Windows handhelds, and Linux devices
Steam Deck and SteamOS
The shortcut workflow is especially useful on Steam Deck because it lets users launch games from Steam Game Mode instead of opening RPCS3 through a desktop-oriented interface each time. The controller-first overlay also better matches the Deck’s console-like use case.

A Steam shortcut does not remove those setup requirements.
ROG Ally, Legion Go, and other Windows handhelds
Windows handhelds can use Steam as a frontend, but their experience is not identical to SteamOS. Desktop focus, Windows notifications, Steam’s controller layer, and vendor software can compete with RPCS3’s button combinations. Steam shortcuts remain useful, but the surrounding interface may feel less console-like.

Behavior depends on the distribution, desktop environment, Steam installation, and RPCS3 package format. AppImage, Flatpak, native packages, and manually compiled builds may differ in filesystem access and shortcut behavior.

Performance remains highly dependent on the game, handheld APU, power limit, operating system, renderer, resolution scale, SPU configuration, shader compilation, firmware, game update, RPCS3 build, and temperature limits.
Reported demonstrations included Yakuza: Dead Souls running at a steady 30 frames per second on Steam Deck and Skate 3 running on an ROG Ally. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, however, still showed slowdown. These are individual examples, not evidence that the handheld improvements provide a universal performance boost.

The overlay does not open
- Confirm that the game window is focused.
- Check that the installed RPCS3 build supports the shortcut.
- Inspect RPCS3, Steam, and operating-system button mappings.
- Temporarily change Steam Input for the shortcut.
- Check whether a handheld vendor overlay is intercepting the buttons.
The default may differ from the reported Start-plus-Select mapping, particularly when a controller profile or package applies its own remapping.

A Steam shortcut appears but the game will not launch
Launch the game directly from RPCS3 first. If it still boots there, check whether the RPCS3 executable or game location has moved, whether Steam is using the intended emulator binary, and whether the shortcut was created under a different Steam installation or user account. Recreating the shortcut is often simpler than manually editing launch arguments.
Also confirm that the required firmware is installed and that the game remains visible in RPCS3’s own game list.

Artwork is cosmetic and does not affect emulation. If a shortcut was created before banner-generation support, Steam’s cache has not refreshed, or RPCS3 cannot associate the expected metadata with the game, remove and recreate the shortcut, then restart Steam.
Controller configuration still requires leaving the game
The rewritten home menu is not a complete replacement for every desktop configuration page. A still-relevant RPCS3 feature request asks for access to the Pads menu from the in-game menu, including for connecting or reassigning local multiplayer controllers. That is a useful reminder that “controller-friendly” does not mean every controller-management task is available from the overlay.
Should handheld owners update?
The improvements are most valuable if you use RPCS3 primarily on a handheld, frequently change settings between games, want PS3 titles in Steam Game Mode, or dislike keyboard-heavy emulator workflows.
Use more caution with a heavily customized installation, a third-party package that lags behind upstream, custom Steam Input profiles, or a setup that needs long-term stability more than new convenience features. Check the release notes for the build you actually use rather than assuming every package exposes the same menu labels and defaults.

By August 16, 2026, RPCS3’s handheld work was more than a promise. The emulator had a controller-oriented in-game menu, supported access to some running-game settings, and could create Steam non-Steam shortcuts with artwork for PS3 games.
It is best understood as a frontend and usability upgrade. It makes RPCS3 more console-like on handheld PCs, but it does not turn PS3 emulation into native Steam gaming, solve difficult compatibility cases, or guarantee smooth performance on every device.
