Anbernic’s RG406V launched globally on September 19, 2024, at 10:00 UTC. Its introductory price was $154.99 before shipping through September 22, after which Anbernic said the price would rise to $164.99. The vertical Android handheld combines a 4-inch 960×720 display with a Unisoc T820 processor, 8GB of RAM, Hall-effect joysticks, active cooling and a 5,500mAh battery.

The launch price is historical rather than a guaranteed current price. Anbernic’s official store now lists multiple storage configurations and regional storefronts, so the price shown at checkout can differ by variant, location, promotion, shipping and tax.

Release date and launch price

Anbernic confirmed global sales of the RG406V beginning September 19, 2024, at 10:00 UTC. The launch offer was $154.99 before shipping, with the advertised price scheduled to become $164.99 after September 22, 2024. NotebookCheck reported the announcement as information supplied by Anbernic.

The RG406V is now an established product rather than a forthcoming release. Anbernic’s official product page shows different configurations, including standard, 128GB and 256GB options. Storefront prices also vary: collection pages have shown prices from about $164.99, while a selected configuration on the US-facing product page showed $194.99 during the cited research period. Those figures should not be confused with the 2024 launch offer.

What the RG406V is

The RG406V is a vertical Android gaming handheld designed as a more powerful follow-up to the RG405V. Its body is aimed at players who prefer a Game Boy-style orientation, while its Unisoc T820 platform places it well above Anbernic’s entry-level Linux handhelds.

The 4-inch, 960×720 panel has a roughly 4:3 shape that suits many older console systems. That means less wasted screen space than on a widescreen handheld when playing games originally designed for televisions or 4:3 portable displays. The trade-off is a smaller viewing area for widescreen Android games, PSP software, modern streamed games and other content designed around 16:9 screens.

Android 13 also makes the RG406V more than a conventional retro-emulation device. Anbernic lists Android gaming, more than 30 emulator categories, wireless streaming, online multiplayer and wireless projection. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every emulator, game or streaming service will work perfectly without configuration.

Performance and emulation expectations

The T820 is intended to handle substantially more than 8-bit and 16-bit systems. The RG406V should be a strong fit for Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Boy systems, PlayStation and arcade platforms. Its hardware is also aimed at more demanding systems such as Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube, Wii and selected PlayStation 2 games.

That does not mean universal full-speed emulation. Results can vary with the emulator, graphics backend, resolution scale, thermal conditions and the individual game. “PS2-capable” should therefore be understood as a target for selected workloads, not a promise that the entire PS2, GameCube or Wii libraries will run flawlessly.

Anbernic’s listing also uses language about a “5G SoC.” That should not be read as cellular 5G connectivity: the published wireless specifications identify Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, not a 5G modem.

Controls, cooling and connectivity

The Hall-effect sticks are a meaningful upgrade over conventional potentiometer-based controls because they are designed to reduce common contact-wear and drift concerns. They are not immune to every possible failure; calibration, firmware, mechanical parts and manufacturing defects can still affect a stick.

RGB lighting surrounds the joysticks, while the six-axis gyroscope adds motion-control support for compatible software. A fan and heat pipe provide active cooling, which may help the device sustain demanding workloads better than a passive design. The cost is potential fan noise and the presence of moving hardware.

USB-C DisplayPort output supports up to 1080p on an external display. Wi-Fi supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, and Bluetooth 5.0 can connect compatible wireless accessories. The 3.5mm headphone jack is useful for players who do not want to rely on Bluetooth audio.

Battery and charging

Anbernic claims up to eight hours of battery life from the 5,500mAh battery and lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge at 5V/2A. These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements. Actual endurance will depend on screen brightness, Wi-Fi use, fan activity, emulator, performance mode and game load.

RG406V versus the RG405V

The RG406V is more than a cosmetic refresh of the RG405V. It moves to the faster T820 platform, adds 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, raises display resolution to 960×720 and includes Hall-effect sticks, RGB lighting, a six-axis gyroscope, active cooling and USB-C DisplayPort output. Its 5,500mAh battery is also larger.

The RG405V can still make sense if it is substantially cheaper and the buyer mainly wants older systems. The RG406V is the more capable choice for Android gaming and higher-end emulation, but its compact 4-inch screen may be less comfortable for long PSP, GameCube, PS2 or streaming sessions.

RG406V versus the RG Cube and RG556

The RG Cube uses the same general T820 performance class but has a squarer design and a different grip and display layout. It is the better fit for someone who prefers that shape; the RG406V is the more traditional vertical handheld.

The RG556 is larger and better suited to buyers who prioritize a spacious screen and roomier controls. The RG406V is more compact and visually closer to a classic vertical retro handheld.

Cheaper models such as the RG40XX V, RG40XX H and RG35XX SP target simpler, lower-performance retro use. They are not direct replacements for an Android T820 device if GameCube, Wii, PS2 or Android gaming is part of the plan.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the configuration. The current store may offer standard, 128GB and 256GB versions. Do not assume every listing includes 256GB.
  2. Check the storefront and currency. Regional pages can show different prices, stock and delivery arrangements.
  3. Separate headline price from delivered cost. Shipping, taxes and import charges may change the final total.
  4. Review fulfillment and warranty terms. Warehouse location, returns and warranty handling can vary by destination.
  5. Plan for Android setup. Emulators, controller mappings, front-end software and per-game settings may require manual configuration.
  6. Use legally obtained software. BIOS files and game files may be required for some emulators; obtain them according to applicable law from media you own.
  7. Match the screen to the library. The 4:3 display is excellent context for many classic systems but less ideal for widescreen Android and streamed content.

Is the RG406V worth buying?

The RG406V is a sensible choice for someone who wants a compact vertical Android handheld with a 4:3 display and considerably more power than entry-level retro consoles. Its T820 platform, 8GB of RAM, active cooling, Hall-effect sticks and DisplayPort output give it a broad feature set, while the 960×720 screen is well matched to many older systems.

It is less compelling for buyers who want a completely plug-and-play Linux experience, a large screen or guaranteed full-speed performance across every PS2, GameCube and Wii title. The original $154.99 deal was attractive, but it applied to the September 2024 launch window. Judge the device against the price of the exact current variant, including shipping and taxes, rather than treating that launch figure as today’s universal price.
