RPG companion approval is usually a hidden or visible, companion-specific relationship value that changes in response to what your character says and does. It is not a universal morality meter: each game decides whose opinion changes, what counts as a positive or negative action, whether disagreement is survivable, and what happens at the extremes. Morality describes the beliefs a companion reacts from, loyalty describes a trust or commitment state a particular game may track, and party banter is authored dialogue unlocked by travel and story progress.
The practical way to read any system is to ask five questions: can you see the value, what is its scope, which actions change it, how does the companion handle disagreement, and what consequences follow? Those answers predict whether a choice will produce a joke, a personal quest, a romance scene, a fight, a betrayal, or a permanent departure.

What companion approval actually measures
Approval is best understood as a relationship variable owned by a particular companion. It records how that character currently regards another character, usually the player. A documented example from Baldur’s Gate 3’s modding reference is GetApprovalRating: the rating owner is normally the companion giving the approval. ChangeApprovalRating changes the value between that owner and the rated character, normally the player. The relationship is therefore directional and character-specific. A decision can please one party member, offend another, and leave a third indifferent.
Games expose this variable in different ways. Some show a bar, tier, adjective, or icon. Others reveal it only through changed greetings, comments, quest options, or romance availability. A few combine both: a visible broad status and hidden sub-values for particular events. There is no RPG-wide formula or standard threshold. Even two games from the same studio can use different scales, decay rules, and scripts.

Why a single party score is misleading
A party-wide score would erase the point of having distinct personalities. In a companion-specific model, the same action has multiple interpretations. Taking a bribe might impress a pragmatic smuggler, disappoint an idealistic healer, and frighten a companion who depends on the local authorities. Designers can then create conflict without treating one response as the objectively correct answer.
Approval also need not be a simple measure of affection. A companion can respect a hard decision while disliking the method, admire competence while distrusting motives, or become more attached through arguments that clarify boundaries. The number, if one exists, is a shorthand for a larger authored relationship state.
Approval, morality, and loyalty are different layers
Approval: the immediate relationship response
Approval changes when a companion witnesses, hears about, or is otherwise affected by an event. Typical triggers include dialogue choices, quest outcomes, gifts, combat decisions, travel conversations, and romance choices. The response may be positive, negative, or neutral. Some systems apply a small change for routine behavior and a large change for a defining betrayal or rescue.
Morality: the beliefs behind a reaction
Morality is usually expressed through a companion’s values rather than through a universal good-and-evil gauge. A lawful character may object to theft because it undermines order; a rebel may object to obedience because it enables oppression. The same choice can therefore produce opposite approval changes without either character being inconsistent.
Some RPGs add a global ethical or reputation layer that affects towns, factions, or the player character. That layer is broader than companion approval. A companion can dislike an action while the faction rewards it, or approve while the player’s public reputation falls. Bethesda’s general support guidance notes that moral and ethical choices can affect relationships with allies and sometimes have lasting consequences, but it does not establish that every game uses a numeric morality scale.

Loyalty: a commitment or trust outcome
Loyalty is game-specific. It may be a separate hidden value, a named personal-quest state, a threshold reached after several approval changes, or simply narrative language for a companion’s commitment. Treat it as an outcome, not a synonym for approval. A companion can approve of many everyday choices yet refuse a dangerous mission because a personal obligation is unresolved. Conversely, a companion who argues with the player may still become loyal after the player honors a promise.
Loyalty commonly gates personal content, special abilities, final-mission participation, or continued availability. The exact rule depends on the game and edition; there is no universal loyalty definition or numeric cutoff.

How designers compare approval systems
| Axis | Questions to ask | What it changes for players |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Is there a bar, label, or only dialogue and behavior? | Visible meters support planning; hidden signals preserve uncertainty and role-play. |
| Scope | Is the value per companion, per faction, or global? | Per-companion values create distinct relationships; global values simplify management. |
| Triggers | Do dialogue, quests, gifts, travel, combat, or romance choices matter? | More trigger types make ordinary play consequential, but can make reactions harder to predict. |
| Disagreement model | Can companions object while remaining friends, or do they only like or dislike? | Rivalry and debate allow principled role-play instead of optimization toward universal approval. |
| Consequences | Does the state affect banter, romance, quests, combat support, betrayal, or departure? | Consequences determine whether the system is cosmetic or structurally important. |
A high approval score is not automatically better role-playing. A strong design lets the player maintain believable relationships while making choices that a companion disputes. The important question is whether disagreement produces readable, proportionate consequences.
What happens when you disagree with a companion?
Constructive disagreement
Many systems treat an isolated negative reaction as a conversation, not a breakup. The companion may object in the moment, add a follow-up line, or remember the event without leaving. This model supports a protagonist with a clear identity rather than a player who must select every companion-approved option.
Accumulated friction
Repeated choices can move a relationship into a colder tier. Greetings may change, optional scenes can disappear, and a companion may challenge the player in camp. If the game uses a threshold, several small reactions can matter more than one dramatic scene.

Irreparable conflict and departure
Dragon Age: Origins is a clear example of a system where actions alter approval and very low approval can make a companion leave permanently. The GDC review by Zachary Truesdell describes the failure state this way: if approval drops too low and cannot be repaired, the companion will leave the party for the rest of the game. That is a design consequence, not a universal rule. Other RPGs allow reconciliation, lock only a quest, or convert the conflict into a confrontation.

How gifts and personal quests affect relationships
Gifts are contextual, not universally positive
Dragon Age: Origins’ approval design is notable for gifts that raise loyalty or approval when they fit a companion. The important word is fit: a gift is a character-specific signal, not a generic currency that every party member values equally. Giving items at random can waste resources or create a relationship you did not intend.
Personal plots provide larger relationship beats
Personal quests put a companion’s beliefs and history on screen. Completing the objective may increase trust, while refusing, delaying, or choosing a method the companion rejects can create a lasting setback. Because these quests explain the reason behind a reaction, they are often more reliable for understanding a character than a one-line approval notification.
Loyalty states frequently emerge from this content. A personal quest can be required before romance, a late-game ability, or a final battle role becomes available, even when ordinary approval is high.

How party banter is triggered
Party banter is authored reactivity between companions, and it is usually conditional rather than purely random. BioWare’s explanation of Dragon Age: Inquisition says additional banter can be unlocked by talking to party members, playing through their personal plots, and advancing the main story. Those triggers make banter a reward for continued party use and narrative progress.
Common trigger categories
- Travel and location: entering a region, crossing a boundary, or spending enough time moving can start a scene.
- Party composition: specific pairs or trios may have unique exchanges, so rotating companions reveals more content.
- Camp or hub conversations: talking to a companion can unlock the next set of comments or remove a conversational prerequisite.
- Personal-quest progress: a new revelation can change what companions discuss on the road.
- Main-story milestones: major plot events can open banter that would be inappropriate earlier.
- Cooldowns and queues: one scene may need to finish before another can play, and combat or fast travel can interrupt the queue.
Silence does not necessarily mean a bug or low approval. The required companion may not be in the active party, the story flag may be missing, or another scene may be occupying the queue. Walking through several areas with a different party and revisiting camp is often enough to expose eligible dialogue, but the exact behavior varies by game.
Romance and approval: related but not identical
Romance systems often use approval or bond states as one gate among several. EA’s official Veilguard romance guidance says that how the player interacts with a companion determines romance access, while romance offers deeper connections and additional dialogue. That illustrates a common pattern: relationship values can unlock authored content without being a moral score.
A high approval value may be necessary but insufficient. The game might also require a personal quest, a timing window, a specific conversation, or a commitment choice. Treat flirtation, friendship, and romance as separate narrative tracks unless the game explicitly merges them.

- Choose a role-play priority. Decide whether your character follows personal convictions, a faction, a companion, or a pragmatic survival rule. This prevents every decision from becoming a hidden-meter puzzle.
- Keep a varied party. Different companions expose different reactions and banter. Use the group that fits the current story, then rotate members when you return to a hub or begin a personal quest.
- Read reactions as evidence. A voiced objection, changed greeting, or new dialogue option can reveal more than a generic approval label. Note which action caused it before making another irreversible choice.
- Do personal content promptly. Personal plots often unlock conversations and loyalty outcomes. Delaying them can leave a relationship in a neutral state even when ordinary approval is high.
- Use gifts and apologies deliberately. In games that support them, match gifts to the recipient and look for explicit repair conversations. Do not assume one item cancels a major betrayal.
- Save before irreversible choices. Make a manual save before companion ultimatums, faction betrayals, romance commitments, or quests described as final. Thresholds and warnings differ by game.
Troubleshooting a missing reaction or banter scene
The companion shows no approval change
Check whether the companion was present, whether the game actually records the event, and whether the choice affects that character at all. Some reactions are intentionally silent or delayed until a later conversation. A visible meter may update only after leaving the dialogue screen.

Banter never starts
Confirm that the required companions are in the active party, finish any pending camp conversations, and advance the main story or personal plot if the game uses those gates. Travel at normal speed through multiple areas rather than repeatedly loading the same short route; cooldowns and location conditions can prevent immediate repetition.
A companion left and cannot be recruited
Look for a repair scene, a personal quest, or a threshold warning in the journal. In systems modeled on Dragon Age: Origins, a sufficiently low value may be permanent. If the game provides no recovery path, reload a save from before the decisive event rather than assuming a later gift will restore access.
What approval systems reveal about RPG design
These mechanics turn party members into responsive characters instead of equipment slots. Approval gives ordinary choices a social cost; morality supplies the perspective behind a reaction; loyalty converts a series of interactions into a commitment; and banter makes the party’s history audible during travel.

If every companion must approve every action, players are rewarded for metagaming rather than for inhabiting a character. If every disagreement causes a departure, relationships become fragile and predictable. A convincing design places reactions on a spectrum, explains important thresholds through dialogue or quests, and reserves irreversible outcomes for decisions that genuinely define the relationship.
When evaluating an unfamiliar RPG, do not ask only whether it has an approval bar. Ask who owns the relationship, which events can change it, whether the game distinguishes affection from trust, how it communicates disagreement, and what content is gated. Those answers tell you far more about the system than a single number.
