There is no universal RPG rule for companions. Romance triggers, recruitment windows, active-party capacity and permanent death all depend on the specific game and its current version. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard illustrate why: one treats camp as a flexible companion hub, while the other documents a defined path from flirtation to an eventual single-partner commitment.
Use the answers below as a framework, then identify the game, platform and patch before following any spoiler-sensitive instructions.

What do “companion rules” actually cover?
Four separate systems are often confused:
- Romance: whether a companion can become a partner, what dialogue or quests unlock that relationship, and whether several romances can remain active.
- Recruitment: when a character joins, whether the opportunity can be missed, and whether a later rescue or invitation exists.
- Party limits: the number of characters who can travel with you at once, which is different from the number of characters you have recruited.
- Death and removal: ordinary defeat, revival, scripted exits, and deaths that permanently remove a companion.
A rule documented for one game should not be transferred to another. Even within one title, a patch can change dialogue, availability or end-game behavior.

The “seven” associated with The Veilguard is the number of companions EA says can be romantic partners. It is not a universal RPG party size or a count that should be applied to other games.

Can I romance a companion?
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian’s relationship description makes the player’s behavior central. A companion’s attitude can respond to what your character says, which choices you make in conversations, how you act in combat and exploration, and how you deal with factions. Camp is specifically presented as a place for companion conversations, including romance.
That description is a design explanation from the game’s Early Access period, not a promise that every current trigger works exactly as described. Treat it as guidance about the system’s reactive intent. For an exact romance route, use the current in-game dialogue and the game’s current patch information rather than assuming an old conversation sequence is still complete.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
EA’s official romance guide identifies three practical categories of progress: flirtatious dialogue, supporting a companion and going on that companion’s quests, and purchasing gifts. It also says all seven companions can be romantic partners regardless of Rook’s race, faction, class or gender. That removes those character-creation choices as eligibility barriers in the documented system.

Can I romance more than one companion?
The Veilguard’s commitment point
EA states: “You can romance multiple companions in Dragon Age™: The Veilguard, but eventually you’ll have to commit to one romantic partner.” The important distinction is timing. Early pursuit of several companions is allowed, but commitment is a later decision. Once you commit, EA says you cannot romance the others.
If you want to see more than one early romance path, keep conversations and companion quests open until you understand where the commitment decision occurs. Do not commit casually if another relationship is still under consideration; the post-commitment restriction is the documented point of no return.
Baldur’s Gate 3 and other RPGs
The cited Larian material explains that relationships react to choices and that romances can test party dynamics, but it does not establish a single rule for simultaneous romances, exclusivity or a universal commitment scene. A guide that says every RPG permits or forbids multiple romances is overstating the evidence. Check the named game’s dialogue outcomes and current guide before making a choice that could close another route.

What is established for Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian’s FAQ says recruited companions remain at camp when they are not in the active adventuring party. At camp, you can swap companions in and out. This means leaving someone behind is not the same as dismissing or losing that character.

The same FAQ says players eventually have to commit after the first act. Because the passage does not provide a complete roster of missable characters or a promise that every recruitment can be repaired later, do not read camp swapping as unlimited access to every companion for the whole story. A missed encounter, a hostile choice or a late story state may still matter.
Why recruitment instructions must name the game and version
Official material reviewed for this cross-game question does not provide a complete recruitment list, exact locations or recovery rules for every RPG. Recruitment can be tied to a quest, a time window, a faction decision, a difficulty mode or a patch. Before following a spoiler-heavy walkthrough, confirm:
- The exact game and edition, including whether an expansion or major update is installed.
- The platform and current patch, because dialogue and quest behavior can differ by version.
- Whether the guide covers initial recruitment, a later rescue, or only the ability to invite a character after a specific choice.
- Whether the proposed action changes romance eligibility, party access or a scripted death state.
When those details are missing, the responsible answer is not “yes” or “no”; it is to identify the game and version first.

Active party versus recruited roster
“Party limit” can mean two different numbers:
- Active adventuring-party slots: characters who accompany you into the current area and participate in encounters.
- Recruited companions: characters who belong to your campaign but wait at a camp, base or other hub.
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 FAQ confirms the second concept: recruited companions can wait at camp and be swapped at camp. The passage reviewed does not publish a numeric universal limit, so no number should be supplied as an answer for every RPG. It also warns against promising unrestricted swapping beyond the first act because the player eventually has to commit.

For a game not named here, look for the current manual, patch notes or in-game party screen. A roster of seven romanceable characters in The Veilguard does not tell you how many can fight beside Rook at once.

Do not confuse defeat, revival and permanent death
Games may use several different death states: a character can be knocked out during a battle, revived by a standard ability, removed by a story event, or killed in a way that permanently changes the roster. A resurrection reference alone cannot prove that permanent death never occurs.
The narrow Baldur’s Gate 3 exception
Larian’s Patch 5 notes say: “Withers will sneakily resurrect any dead companions that fell before the final battle so they can join the ending cinematics.” The sentence is limited in three ways: it concerns companions who died before the final battle, it describes Withers’ intervention, and it exists to place those characters in the ending cinematics. It does not specify ordinary revival rules, every possible death state, scripted deaths, deaths during the final battle or how another RPG handles companions.
What can be concluded for other games?
No universal companion-death answer is supported by the official material reviewed. If a game has permadeath, ironman rules, branching story deaths or a no-revival difficulty, those conditions must be stated for that game and mode. If a guide cites a resurrection feature, check whether it is a combat mechanic, a quest reward, a temporary state or an end-game presentation fix.

A practical checklist before you make an irreversible choice
Use this sequence whenever a companion decision matters:
- Name the game and version. Include edition, platform and major patch or expansion.
- Classify the decision. Is it romance progression, recruitment, party composition or death protection?
- Separate the roster from the active party. A character waiting at camp may still be available even when they are not travelling.
- Check for a commitment point. In The Veilguard, commitment ends access to other romances; in Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian warns that commitment eventually becomes relevant after the first act.
- Save before a high-stakes conversation or quest. This is especially important before faction choices, companion missions and final-battle transitions.
- Read the qualification attached to any revival claim. “Resurrected for ending cinematics” is not the same as “cannot die permanently.”
Sarah Baylus, a Larian lead writer, summarized the studio’s design framing this way: “At the end of the day this remains a D&D game and the most important character in a game of D&D is you.” That Early Access-era statement explains the emphasis on player choice; it is not a current mechanical rule or a guarantee about any particular companion.
What information is still needed for a precise answer?
A useful companion answer should identify the title before giving directions. Ask for the game, platform, patch, difficulty mode and whether spoilers are acceptable. Then specify which of these the reader wants:
- the first opportunity to recruit a named companion;
- whether a missed recruitment can be recovered;
- the number of active party slots;
- the total recruited roster and where inactive companions wait;
- romance eligibility, progression triggers and exclusivity;
- revival options, scripted deaths and permanent removal.
Without those details, broad claims sound definitive while answering a different game. The safest cross-game conclusion is that companion systems are designed per title, and the current version controls the procedure.
Bottom line
Romance, recruitment, party limits and permanent death are not shared RPG standards. Baldur’s Gate 3 documents camp-based companion swapping and reactive relationships, with a warning that commitment eventually matters after the first act. Dragon Age: The Veilguard documents romance through dialogue, support, quests and gifts, permits multiple pursuits until a single-partner commitment, and makes all seven companions romanceable regardless of Rook’s identity. Its seven romance options are not a party-size rule. Finally, the Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5 resurrection note applies to a specific pre-final-battle cinematic situation, not to permanent-death mechanics in general.
