The best companion system depends on what you want the relationship to do. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the clearest example of a visible, reactive approval model: dialogue, quests, combat decisions and faction choices can change a companion’s score, which in turn affects conversations, persuasion difficulty, personal-quest outcomes, romance and, in some cases, whether that character stays. Mass Effect shows the strongest mechanical use of loyalty quests, turning a companion’s personal crisis into a mission that can unlock gameplay benefits. Dragon Age: The Veilguard puts more emphasis on relationship status, gifts, flirtation and a later romance commitment.
Approval, loyalty and romance are related, but they are not the same feature. Approval is an ongoing reaction to your behavior; a loyalty or personal quest is a character-specific test; romance adds intimate dialogue and extra gates on top of the relationship system. Understanding those layers makes it easier to role-play consistently, disagree without accidentally losing a companion, and recognize when a romance has become unavailable.

What the three companion systems actually measure
Party approval or affinity
Approval is a running relationship signal. The game records how a companion responds to what you say, which quests you accept, whom you help, how you fight and which factions you support. Some games display a number; others use labels, tiers or only reveal the change through dialogue and quest availability.
In a visible system, approval is not simply a friendship score. It can be a gate for new conversations, a modifier on persuasion checks, access to a personal quest, a romance threshold or a condition for remaining in the party. Because it changes repeatedly, one decision rarely defines the entire relationship. A character may dislike a particular action while still valuing your larger pattern of behavior.

Loyalty and personal quests
A loyalty quest is a mission built around the companion’s own history, values or obligations. The problem belongs to that character rather than to the main plot alone: a family conflict, an old allegiance, a moral compromise or a debt that must be settled. Completing the mission gives the relationship a concrete test instead of leaving it as a sequence of approval notifications.
These quests can produce two kinds of payoff. Narratively, they reveal why the companion behaves as they do and let you decide whether to support, challenge or redirect them. Mechanically, they may unlock a new capability or improve the companion’s usefulness. A scholarly analysis of role-playing-game design identifies the Mass Effect loyalty model as a clear example of this second function: relationship progress is converted into hidden ability unlocks, so the personal mission matters in combat as well as in the story.
Romance options
Romance is usually an additional layer, not a replacement for approval. It adds flirtatious dialogue, exclusive scenes and relationship gates that can be stricter than ordinary friendship. A companion can approve of your decisions without being romanceable, or a romance can be available only after a particular conversation or quest even when the general relationship is positive.

Others use a hard threshold: if approval or affinity is not high enough when a scene becomes available, the romance may close permanently.

The important distinction is direction of travel. Approval reacts to many small choices. A personal quest concentrates the relationship into one consequential situation. Romance selects a more intimate path and usually adds conditions of its own.

Baldur’s Gate 3: the most transparent approval-driven model
Baldur’s Gate 3 makes approval unusually legible. Dialogue, quests, combat decisions and faction choices can produce explicit approval or disapproval, allowing you to connect an action with a companion’s reaction. The BG3 Wiki describes typical event changes of ±1 for a small event, ±5 for a medium event and ±10 for a large event, with a maximum approval value of 100. Those figures apply to BG3 specifically, not to role-playing games in general.
What approval controls
In BG3, approval can change ordinary conversations and the outcomes of personal quests. It also affects persuasion difficulty and the thresholds used to start or continue companion romances. The relationship is therefore both a role-playing signal and a practical resource: a character who trusts you may be easier to persuade, more willing to disclose information and less likely to reject a proposed course of action.

Depending on the companion and circumstances, a deteriorating relationship can close romance opportunities or contribute to a companion leaving the party. The game’s reactivity is the reason to treat a disapproval message as information rather than as an automatic failure: you have learned a value that may matter in a later decision.
How to handle disagreement
You can disagree with a companion and still maintain the relationship. A single negative reaction is one event in a score that can move in both directions. If a decision matters to the companion, discuss it afterward, take them on quests that align with their priorities when practical and complete their personal content. The risk comes from a sustained pattern of choices that contradict the character’s core values, not from every isolated argument.
For romance, treat approval as a prerequisite rather than a guarantee. A high score can make a conversation available, but you still need to choose the relevant dialogue and satisfy the companion’s quest conditions. If a romance scene does not appear, check whether the required conversation or personal event has occurred before assuming the score alone is the problem.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: gifts, quests and a later commitment
Electronic Arts’ 2026 romance guide describes a system built from flirtatious quips, siding with a companion, accompanying them on quests, purchasing gifts and raising the relationship status through companion content. It also states that all seven companions are possible romantic partners. That rule is specific to Dragon Age: The Veilguard; it should not be generalized to every game in the Dragon Age series.
Why the commitment lock matters
The game lets you pursue multiple companions initially, then requires a commitment to one. This creates a different form of tension from a pure approval meter. Early flirtation is exploratory, while the later decision establishes the relationship you intend to keep. If you are trying to see every romance, make separate saves before the commitment conversation rather than assuming that early flirt options remain reversible.
Companion quests as relationship proof
Veilguard’s companion quests are not just optional lore. Going on those missions both advances the bond and exposes the character’s priorities, giving you context for later choices. Gifts provide another deliberate input: instead of waiting for a random approval event, you can select an item that signals attention to a particular companion. The result is a relationship model that feels more curated than a constant stream of hidden numerical adjustments.
Romance still depends on choices. Flirtation alone does not replace supporting the companion, completing their quests or reaching the relationship stage where commitment is offered. Conversely, choosing to side with a companion during a conflict can communicate support even when the choice does not produce a visible score.
Mass Effect: when loyalty quests pay off mechanically
The Mass Effect loyalty model is the clearest example of a personal quest carrying a direct gameplay stake. A companion’s loyalty mission presents a problem rooted in that character’s history or obligations. Your decisions determine whether the issue is resolved on the companion’s terms, and the scholarly analysis of the series identifies hidden ability unlocks as a reward for relationship progress.

Why this design feels different
Because the reward affects the companion’s capabilities, loyalty is not only a measure of affection. It is also preparation for later challenges. Completing a mission can make a character more effective, but the narrative choice still matters: a technically successful outcome may not express the same support as the companion’s preferred resolution.
Romance is layered onto these arcs rather than replacing them. The exact romance gates and loyalty consequences vary by installment, so check the rules for the particular Mass Effect game you are playing before relying on a guide written for another entry. Do not assume that a loyalty success, a romance conversation or a squad outcome works identically across the trilogy.
Bethesda’s affinity model: many small inputs instead of one meter
Bethesda support guidance describes a broad affinity approach. You can build a relationship by completing quests with the companion active, finishing a unique personal quest when one is available, speaking with the companion regularly, using the Paramour aid item or equipping the Leadership Social skill. These inputs show why “approval meter” is too narrow a label for every RPG: the system may reward time spent together, a temporary aid effect and a character-specific mission alongside ordinary dialogue choices.
A practical routine
- Keep the companion active. Complete relevant quests with that character present so the game can register the shared experience.
- Talk regularly. Conversations can advance affinity and reveal whether a personal quest is ready.
- Complete the personal quest. When a unique mission appears, treat it as the clearest opportunity to deepen the bond.
- Use support tools deliberately. The Paramour aid item and the Leadership Social skill are listed as affinity-building options in Bethesda’s guidance; their availability and effect depend on the specific title.
Because Bethesda’s model varies by game, verify the title-specific romance rules before planning around a particular companion. The broad lesson is that consistency and shared activity may matter as much as a single dramatic dialogue choice.

“Best” therefore means best aligned with your preferred feedback. Players who want a readable cause-and-effect loop tend to prefer BG3. Players who want a companion’s story to have a tangible build consequence may prefer Mass Effect. Players who want a broad romance roster and an explicit commitment moment may prefer Veilguard. Players who enjoy gradual bonding through routine play may find Bethesda’s approach more natural.

Can you disagree with a companion and keep them loyal?
Usually, yes, but no system guarantees it. Approval-based games generally treat disagreement as one input among many. You can challenge a companion’s plan, refuse a request or support a rival faction and still recover if later actions demonstrate respect or shared priorities. The exception is a decision that directly violates a companion’s non-negotiable values or occurs after the relationship has already fallen into a danger zone.
Personal quests are the critical checkpoint. During one, the companion is asking you to define what support means. Siding with them may deepen the bond; opposing them may produce a more complex relationship or permanently close a path. In games with hidden loyalty rewards, the outcome can also affect gameplay readiness.
Romance adds another kind of disagreement: you may remain a trusted friend while losing the romantic route. A relationship can therefore survive socially while failing a romance gate. Read the companion’s responses, watch for a relationship-status change and keep a save before an irreversible commitment or personal-quest decision.
A reliable playbook for managing companion relationships
Before a major decision
- Bring the companion whose values are relevant so the game can register the interaction.
- Speak with companions after major quests; new dialogue often explains what they want before a gate appears.
- Save before a personal quest or romance conversation if the game presents a clear point of no return.
During the decision
- Choose the response that matches the relationship you want, not merely the option that sounds universally heroic.
- Separate friendship from romance in your planning. Approval can preserve one while closing the other.
- When a game exposes a numerical change, treat the size of the change as feedback, not as a command to reload after every −1.
After a negative reaction
- Let the conversation finish and check whether a new dialogue option or quest has appeared.
- Spend time with the companion on activities that fit their stated priorities.
- Complete their personal content before making another decision that directly conflicts with them.
- If the relationship remains low, decide whether the character’s opposition is part of the story you want rather than trying to force universal approval.
What not to assume when comparing RPGs
There is no universal definition of an approval meter. One game may show a score, another may use categories such as friendly or hostile, and another may communicate affinity only through altered dialogue and quest availability. A guide that gives exact thresholds for one title cannot be safely applied to another.
Romance rules are equally specific. Veilguard’s seven-companion figure comes from Electronic Arts’ 2026 guide. BG3’s approval increments and maximum come from BG3 Wiki’s 2026 reference. Bethesda’s affinity steps come from its support guidance, while the mechanical loyalty-quest example comes from analysis of Mass Effect. Treat each number, roster and reward as belonging to that named game or source, not as a genre standard.
Bottom line
Approval tells you how a companion is reacting now; a loyalty or personal quest asks you to prove what that relationship means; romance turns the bond into a gated, more intimate path. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the clearest reactive feedback, Mass Effect demonstrates the strongest gameplay payoff for loyalty missions, Dragon Age: The Veilguard combines gifts and companion quests with a later commitment choice, and Bethesda’s affinity model rewards sustained day-to-day involvement. You can disagree and remain loyal in many cases, but repeated value conflicts, failed personal quests and missed romance gates can still have lasting consequences.
