For gaming at similar prices, buy the RTX 4060. It is typically around 20–22% faster, uses substantially less power, supports DLSS Frame Generation, and adds AV1 hardware encoding. Choose the RTX 3060 12GB when it is meaningfully cheaper or when your games, mods, local AI models, or CUDA applications genuinely need more than 8GB of VRAM.

This comparison is specifically about the RTX 3060 12GB. The RTX 3060 8GB is a different, slower-memory variant and should not be treated as the same card.

Which card is faster for gaming?

The RTX 4060 is the faster gaming GPU. Tom’s Hardware measured it roughly 20% ahead of the RTX 3060 12GB at 1080p and 1440p in one comparison, while its separate 1080p testing put the advantage at about 22%. At 4K Ultra, the lead narrowed to roughly 10% in that test suite.

These are averages, not guarantees for every game. Results vary with the CPU, driver, settings, resolution, and whether the game is limited by VRAM. Nevertheless, the general conclusion is consistent: when both cards can run the same settings within their memory limits, the RTX 4060 normally delivers higher frame rates and better efficiency.

Tom’s Hardware’s comparison also found that the RTX 4060 generally remained faster in games where its 8GB memory became a limitation. That does not make the 8GB capacity irrelevant: the RTX 3060 may allow higher texture settings or avoid severe stuttering in a particular title. It simply means that extra VRAM does not automatically turn the older card into the faster one.

1080p gaming

1080p is the RTX 4060’s strongest use case. It is suitable for high-refresh esports gaming and can handle demanding games at high settings, often with DLSS Quality or Balanced when necessary. The RTX 3060 12GB remains a sensible budget option if it costs considerably less, especially for players willing to use high rather than maximum settings.

1440p gaming

The RTX 4060 is still faster at 1440p, but its 8GB framebuffer gives it less headroom. Newer games may require lower texture quality, reduced ray tracing, or DLSS. The RTX 3060’s 12GB can help with texture-heavy games and large mods, but its lower rendering and ray-tracing performance prevents it from being a strong 1440p Ultra card.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4060 V2 OC Edition (PCIe 4.0, 8GB GDDR6, DLSS 3, HDMI 2.1a, DisplayPort 1.4a, 2-Slot Design, Axial-tech Fan Design, 0dB Technology), 3 Year Warranty
  • Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • OC Mode: 2535 MHz (Boost Clock) / Default Mode: 2505 MHz (Boost Clock)
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

4K gaming

Neither card is an ideal 4K purchase. The 3060’s 12GB helps memory capacity but cannot compensate for its limited raw performance. The 4060’s 8GB is a more obvious constraint with 4K textures, ray tracing, and demanding modern releases. If 4K is the real target, look for a faster GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM rather than choosing between these two by memory capacity alone.

Ray tracing, DLSS, and Frame Generation

The RTX 4060 has newer RT and Tensor cores and generally performs better with ray tracing. It also supports the RTX 40-series implementation of DLSS Frame Generation, which the RTX 3060 does not support in hardware.

These technologies are different:

  • Native rendering: The GPU renders every displayed frame traditionally.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: The game renders at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image.
  • DLSS Frame Generation: The GPU generates interpolated frames between traditionally rendered frames.
  • FSR and similar options: Vendor-neutral upscaling alternatives whose quality and features depend on the game.

Frame Generation can make supported single-player games look smoother, but generated frames are not equivalent to additional traditionally rendered frames. It works best when the underlying frame rate is already reasonably high. It can add latency and may produce artifacts, so it is not automatically useful for competitive esports. It cannot fix a very low base frame rate or a CPU bottleneck.

The RTX 4060 should not be described as having every feature of newer RTX 50-series cards. Blackwell’s newer multi-frame-generation capabilities are a separate generation.

Does 12GB beat 8GB?

VRAM capacity and GPU speed solve different problems. The RTX 3060’s 12GB can be valuable for:

Rank #3
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, 2X WINDFORCE Fans, 8GB 128-bit GDDR6, GV-N4060WF2OC-8GD Video Card
  • Powered by NVIDIA DLSS 3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace architechture, and full ray tracing
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 4060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR6 128-bit memory interface
  • High-resolution texture packs
  • Heavily modded games
  • Some 1440p and 4K settings
  • Local AI models and GPU compute workloads
  • CUDA or professional applications that allocate large GPU buffers

The RTX 4060’s 8GB is generally adequate for standard 1080p gaming, competitive games, sensible high or ultra settings, and DLSS-based play. It is not accurate to say that 8GB is enough for every modern game. It is better described as a 1080p-oriented compromise with less long-term headroom.

When a game exceeds the 4060’s practical memory budget, lowering textures or ray tracing may restore smooth performance. The 3060’s additional capacity can prevent that compromise in some titles, but 12GB does not make the 3060 a high-end 1440p or 4K GPU.

Why is the RTX 4060 faster with less memory?

The RTX 3060 has more VRAM and a wider 192-bit memory bus, but bus width alone does not determine gaming performance. The RTX 4060 uses the newer Ada Lovelace architecture, higher efficiency, improved scheduling, newer RT and Tensor cores, and a much larger 24MB L2 cache. That cache reduces the need to access external memory as often and helps offset the narrower 128-bit bus.

In practical terms, the 3060 wins on capacity while the 4060 wins on the speed and efficiency of the work it can perform when 8GB is sufficient.

Power, cooling, and system compatibility

NVIDIA rates the RTX 4060 at 115W graphics power versus 170W for the RTX 3060 12GB. Tom’s Hardware measured a gaming power advantage of approximately 30–40W for the 4060, depending on resolution and test conditions, and reported roughly 50% better performance per watt.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EVO OC Edition 8GB GDDR6 (PCIe 4.0, 8GB GDDR6, DLSS 3, HDMI 2.1a, DisplayPort 1.4a, Axial-tech Fan Design, Auto-Extreme Technology), 3 Year Warranty
  • Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • OC edition: Boost Clock 2595 MHz (OC Mode)/ 2565 MHz (Default Mode)
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

That difference can mean lower electricity use, easier cooling, less heat inside the case, and potentially quieter operation. It also makes the 4060 attractive for compact systems. Do not apply one universal PSU recommendation: check the exact board-partner model, its connector requirements, and the rest of the system. NVIDIA’s specifications and the manufacturer’s product page are the appropriate references.

PCIe considerations

The RTX 4060 uses PCIe 4.0 x8, while the RTX 3060 uses PCIe 4.0 x16. PCIe is backward-compatible, so the 4060 can work in an older PCIe 3.0 system. However, performance effects depend on the game, CPU, motherboard, and workload; PCIe 3.0 does not automatically make the card unusable.

Before buying, confirm that:

  • The motherboard has a full-length graphics slot with suitable electrical connectivity.
  • Your CPU is not already the limiting factor at 1080p.
  • The case has enough clearance for the specific card.
  • The power connector can reach the card safely.
  • The PSU has adequate capacity and the correct connectors.

Streaming, recording, AI, and creator workloads

Streaming and recording

The RTX 4060 is the better choice for a new streaming build because Ada adds AV1 hardware encoding. Where the platform accepts AV1 ingest, it can provide better image quality than older codecs at comparable bitrates. Platform support is essential; where AV1 is unavailable, you may still need H.264. CPU performance, memory, storage, capture software, and settings also affect the result. OBS Studio is a relevant official software option.

Local AI and CUDA

The RTX 3060 12GB may be the better choice when VRAM capacity is the limiting factor. A model or workload that cannot fit into 8GB may run on the 3060, while the faster 4060 cannot run it without changing the model, quantization, batch size, or memory strategy.

More VRAM does not guarantee faster execution. If the workload fits in 8GB, the RTX 4060 may be faster and more efficient. Check the exact software or model requirements rather than assuming that “12GB always wins.”

Which card suits each buyer?

  • 1080p gamer: RTX 4060 at similar prices; RTX 3060 12GB if substantially cheaper.
  • 1440p gamer: RTX 4060 for higher speed, but be prepared to reduce textures or ray tracing. Choose the 3060 for cheaper texture headroom, not Ultra performance.
  • Esports player: RTX 4060, particularly for high-refresh gaming. Frame Generation is usually less important than low latency.
  • Streamer: RTX 4060 if the service supports AV1.
  • Local AI or VRAM-sensitive CUDA user: RTX 3060 12GB when the workload is known to need more than 8GB.
  • Small-form-factor builder: RTX 4060, subject to the exact card’s dimensions and cooling.
  • Used-card buyer: A tested RTX 3060 12GB can be attractive with a good return policy and warranty.

How price should decide the purchase in 2026

Do not use the original launch prices—$299 for the RTX 4060 and $329 for the RTX 3060—as proof of current value. Both are older-generation products, and availability may include new, refurbished, marketplace, or used listings. Compare the exact condition, warranty, seller, and return period.

  • 4060 within roughly 10–15% of the 3060: Choose the RTX 4060 for gaming.
  • 3060 substantially cheaper: Choose the RTX 3060 12GB for ordinary 1080p gaming or VRAM-sensitive work.
  • Either card near RTX 5060 pricing: Investigate the RTX 5060 before buying. PC Gamer reported a lowest observed RTX 5060 price of $359 on August 14, 2026; that was a dated deal signal, not a guaranteed universal price. Check the official RTX 5060 family page and current retailer listings.
  • You need substantially more memory: Consider a newer 16GB card, such as an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB where its price fits the budget.

Useful places to compare current listings include Newegg’s RTX 4060 listings, Newegg’s RTX 3060 results, and the relevant Best Buy RTX 4060 search. Treat each listing according to whether it is new, refurbished, used, or marketplace-sold.

Buying a used RTX 3060 12GB

Before purchasing, verify the exact 12GB model rather than the RTX 3060 8GB variant. Ask about:

  • Warranty and return period
  • Temperatures under load
  • Fan noise or bearing problems
  • Artifacts, crashes, and driver stability
  • Possible mining use
  • Disassembly or cooler removal
  • Included power adapters and accessories

A clean, tested 3060 12GB with meaningful warranty coverage can be a better bargain than an inflated old-stock card, but it should not cost close to a faster current-generation alternative.

Final verdict

Buy the RTX 4060 if the RTX 3060 12GB and RTX 4060 8GB cost roughly the same. It is faster for normal gaming, more efficient, better suited to streaming, and offers Frame Generation.

Buy the RTX 3060 12GB when it is substantially cheaper or when your workload genuinely needs its extra memory. Its 12GB can help with local AI, CUDA applications, large texture packs, and heavily modded games, but it does not overcome the 4060’s gaming-performance advantage when both cards fit their memory limits.

If either older card approaches the price of an RTX 5060, stop and compare that newer option first.
