The RTX 4070 Ti is faster, but the RTX 4070 is usually the better buy. The Ti has roughly 30% more CUDA cores and stronger ray-tracing hardware, yet both cards have 12GB of VRAM and the Ti uses substantially more power. In 2026, neither should be bought at just any price: choose a discounted RTX 4070 for efficient 1440p gaming, consider a used RTX 4070 Ti only at a large discount, and compare both against newer RTX 5070-series cards before buying.

What separates the RTX 4070 from the 4070 Ti?
The RTX 4070 Ti has 7,680 CUDA cores compared with 5,888 on the RTX 4070, as well as more RT and Tensor cores and a higher rated boost clock. That gives it more rendering capacity, particularly in GPU-bound games and ray-traced workloads.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →However, the core-count difference is not a promise of 30% higher frame rates. Real performance depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, driver, CPU, and whether the workload is limited by the GPU or by system memory. A high-refresh 1440p game running into a CPU limit may show little difference, while a demanding ray-traced title can benefit much more from the Ti.
#1 Best Overall
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
The biggest specification weakness is shared by both cards: 12GB of VRAM on a 192-bit memory interface. The 4070 Ti offers more compute performance, not more memory capacity. That distinction matters for 4K textures, ray tracing, mods, creative applications, and future games.
Gaming performance
1440p
Both cards are fundamentally 1440p GPUs. The RTX 4070 is well suited to high-quality 1440p gaming, especially when DLSS is available. It is the more sensible option for a 60Hz or 75Hz display, a modest CPU, or a system where low heat and low power use matter.
The RTX 4070 Ti is the better choice for a high-refresh 1440p monitor, heavier ray tracing, or games in which the RTX 4070 cannot maintain the desired frame rate. Its extra resources are most visible when the GPU is fully loaded; they matter less in esports games or low settings where the processor becomes the bottleneck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4K
The Ti is faster at 4K, but neither card becomes a universally comfortable 4K choice simply because it has a higher GPU tier. At 4K, demanding textures and ray tracing can increase VRAM pressure. If a game is memory-limited, the Ti’s extra shader power may not solve stutter or texture compromises.
DLSS can make 4K output more practical by rendering internally at a lower resolution, but it does not remove the need for adequate VRAM or guarantee low latency. For a long-term 4K build, a 16GB card such as the RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 5070 Ti is a safer direction than either original 12GB model.
Ray tracing, DLSS, and Frame Generation
Both cards use Ada Lovelace and support hardware ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, NVIDIA Reflex, AV1 encoding, NVIDIA Broadcast, and NVIDIA Studio features. The 4070 Ti’s additional RT and Tensor cores make it faster when ray tracing and AI-assisted rendering are the limiting factors.
Frame Generation should not be treated as equivalent to rendering twice as many native frames. It inserts generated frames between rendered frames, so the underlying frame rate, responsiveness, and latency still matter. Compare native rendering, ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, and Frame Generation separately rather than folding every mode into one FPS number.

For independent comparisons, use benchmarks that identify the game versions, drivers, resolution, presets, ray-tracing settings, DLSS state, average FPS, and 1% lows. Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 4070 review provides contemporary head-to-head context, while its GPU hierarchy helps place older cards in a broader performance context.
Power, cooling, and compatibility
The RTX 4070 is the clear efficiency winner. NVIDIA rates it at 200W total graphics power and the RTX 4070 Ti at 285W—an 85W, or roughly 42.5%, difference in rated graphics power. Actual consumption varies by model, factory overclock, power limit, and workload, but the Ti produces more heat and demands more cooling.
NVIDIA lists a 650W minimum system power recommendation for the RTX 4070 Founders Edition setup. Its guidance supports either two PCIe 8-pin cables through the adapter or one 300W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. Board-partner cards can differ. Many RTX 4070 Ti models use a 12VHPWR-style connector and ship with an adapter, so verify the exact card’s manual and cable requirements.
Physical clearance is another major difference. The RTX 4070 Founders Edition is approximately 244mm long, 112mm high, and two slots wide, although power-cable clearance is still required. RTX 4070 Ti partner cards are often longer and three slots thick. Before buying, check GPU length, height, thickness, front-radiator clearance, connector bend space, PSU routing, and case airflow.

Creators, streaming, and AI
Streaming and video editing
For streaming, the cards share the important Ada-era media features, including eighth-generation NVENC and AV1 encoding. The Ti is therefore not automatically better in stream quality. Its advantage is additional GPU rendering capacity, not a completely different encoder feature set.
Video-editing performance is application-dependent. Check whether your software benefits from CUDA, NVENC, Tensor acceleration, or general GPU effects processing, and consider timeline resolution, export codec, effects, and VRAM usage. The Ti can be faster in GPU-heavy projects, but it is not universally faster in every editing workflow.
AI workloads
The RTX 4070 Ti has 240 Tensor cores compared with 184 on the RTX 4070, but both have only 12GB of VRAM. For local AI, model fit can matter more than nominal Tensor-core count. Quantization, batch size, context length, framework support, and system-RAM offloading all affect the result.
If a model does not fit comfortably in 12GB, the Ti’s additional compute will not remove the capacity constraint. Buyers focused on local AI should consider a 16GB or 24GB card instead and verify CUDA and framework compatibility for the particular application.
RTX 4070 vs newer alternatives in 2026
Launch pricing is now historical context, not a buying recommendation. The RTX 4070 launched at $599 and the RTX 4070 Ti at $799. NVIDIA later positioned the RTX 4070 Super at $599 and reduced the official RTX 4070 price to $549, making the original Ti’s launch value difficult to defend. Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 4070 Super coverage documents that pricing shift.
The newer RTX 5070 launched at $549 and the RTX 5070 Ti at $749. The 5070 has 12GB of GDDR7, while the 5070 Ti has 16GB of GDDR7 and substantially higher memory bandwidth. NVIDIA’s current RTX 5070 family specifications identify the newer Blackwell architecture and newer DLSS feature generation.
NVIDIA has advertised the RTX 5070 as twice as fast as the RTX 4070, and the RTX 5070 Ti as twice as fast as the RTX 4070 Ti, in selected conditions using specified settings and newer features. Those statements should not be read as universal native-raster results. Actual street price, stock, game support, and benchmark conditions matter. NVIDIA’s official RTX 5070 marketplace listing showed a $549 price signal but was out of stock when observed; availability changes by region and date.
The RTX 4070 Ti Super deserves special attention. It has 8,448 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR6X, and a 256-bit bus at the same 285W rated power, making it materially more suitable for demanding 4K use than the original 4070 Ti. Do not confuse the two models: “Ti Super” is not merely a branding variation.

- Choose the RTX 4070 for efficient 1440p gaming, smaller cases, quieter systems, modest PSUs, or a clearly lower purchase price.
- Choose the RTX 4070 Ti for high-refresh 1440p or demanding ray tracing when it is priced close enough to the 4070 to justify its higher power draw.
- Choose neither for a high-end 4K build if a 16GB card is affordable. The Ti’s extra compute does not increase its VRAM capacity.
- Choose the RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 5070 Ti when 16GB matters for 4K, creative work, or longer ownership.
- Choose an RTX 5070 over an RTX 4070 when their prices are close and you want newer Blackwell features, but remember that both have 12GB.
- Consider an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT if raster performance and VRAM value matter more than CUDA, NVENC, NVIDIA Studio, or the DLSS ecosystem. See AMD’s official product page and verify current independent pricing and testing.
Used RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti buying checklist
Used prices vary too much by country, condition, seller, and warranty to state a universal “good price.” Compare the total cost with a current RTX 5070-series card, then inspect the individual listing.
- Confirm the exact model, memory type, dimensions, connector, and included adapter.
- Ask about continuous-load or mining history.
- Check warranty transfer rules and obtain a verifiable serial number.
- Test for coil whine, fan-bearing noise, overheating, hotspot temperature, and memory errors.
- Inspect the 12VHPWR connector and adapter for heat damage or poor insertion.
- Prefer a seller offering a meaningful return period.
- Do not pay near RTX 5070 Ti money for an original 12GB RTX 4070 Ti.
Final verdict
Between the two, the RTX 4070 is the better value and efficiency choice, while the RTX 4070 Ti is the faster gaming card. The Ti’s roughly 30% larger core configuration helps at high-refresh 1440p and in ray-traced workloads, but its 285W power rating and unchanged 12GB VRAM make the premium harder to justify.
In 2026, buy an RTX 4070 only when it is clearly cheaper than a comparable RTX 5070. Buy an RTX 4070 Ti only when it is substantially cheaper than an RTX 5070 Ti and you specifically need its extra 1440p performance. If long-term 4K, demanding creator workloads, or local AI are priorities, step up to a modern 16GB-or-more card instead.
