A Reddit user says a small triangular section of his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition cooler detached after he moved his computer. Wccftech reported the account on October 2, 2026, describing photographs that appeared to show the fin section separated from the card and heatpipes exposed. The card has not been independently examined, so this is one owner report—not evidence of a model-wide defect or proof that moving the PC caused the damage.
What the owner reported
The user, identified on Reddit as u/Maker_753, said he noticed that a small part of the RTX 4090 Founders Edition heatsink had fallen off after relocating his PC. The reported images show a detached fin assembly and visible heatpipes, according to Wccftech’s account.
The owner reportedly bought the card in August 2023 and said the problem was discovered just outside NVIDIA’s three-year warranty period. Those purchase and warranty details, like the condition of the card, have not been independently verified. The report also says repair specialists quoted nearly $400, but that is an estimate given to this owner, not a general market price.
Does this show a design defect?
No. There is no prevalence data establishing how often an RTX 4090 Founders Edition heatsink section detaches, and the report says the owner could not find comparable accounts. A single anecdote cannot establish a manufacturing defect or a recurring failure mode.

The PC move is the context in which the owner noticed the detached section. It is not a verified cause. The available account does not establish whether a solder joint failed, whether thermal cycling weakened a connection, whether transport stresses were involved, or whether the PCB or other components were damaged.
What is known about the possible failure mechanism?
Discussion around the report mentioned solder failure and thermal cycling as possible explanations. These are hypotheses, not a diagnosis. Without an inspection of the cooler and card, it is also unknown whether the section detached before the move, during handling, or afterward.

A detached heatsink section can change how heat is transferred away from the GPU or memory components, but the available sources do not establish this card’s temperatures, performance, electrical condition, or safety after the incident. Owners should not assume the card is unaffected simply because it still displays an image.
Is a detached RTX 4090 FE heatsink covered by warranty?
NVIDIA’s current US GeForce graphics-card warranty lists the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition and provides a three-year term beginning on the purchase date. Under the policy terms, NVIDIA may repair or replace a product it determines to have a covered manufacturing defect or hardware-component failure. The policy directs customers with a suspected problem to contact NVIDIA Customer Care.

Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA; GeForce cards sold by board partners are generally handled under the partner’s warranty, according to NVIDIA’s warranty overview. Whether a particular detached cooler qualifies depends on NVIDIA’s assessment, the purchase date, the card’s condition, and the applicable policy terms. The reported owner’s eligibility, claim submission, and outcome are not independently confirmed.
What should an owner do before attempting a repair?
- Stop stressing the card. Avoid gaming or benchmarking until the cooler and the card have been assessed. Do not assume normal operation proves that temperatures and component contact are safe.
- Document the condition. Take clear photographs of the detached part, exposed heatpipes, screws, brackets, PCB, and any visible marks. Keep every separated piece.
- Gather purchase records. Save the invoice, retailer information, serial number, and purchase date. These details are relevant to a warranty review.
- Contact NVIDIA Customer Care first. Describe the physical failure and ask for an inspection or an authorized remedy before applying adhesive, removing the cooler, or shipping the card.
- Package it carefully if support requests a return. Use appropriate antistatic protection and cushioning, and follow NVIDIA’s shipping instructions rather than improvising a repair.
Can the RTX 4090 FE heatsink be repaired?
The report does not verify a compatible replacement heatsink, an authorized repair program, a successful repair, or a fixed price. The nearly $400 figure belongs to the individual owner’s inquiry and should not be treated as a standard quote.

Do not apply thermal epoxy based solely on this story. Adhesive can make later inspection harder, alter the cooler’s contact or pressure, and potentially affect warranty evaluation. If NVIDIA declines coverage, compare any independent repairer using evidence that the shop has worked on RTX 4090 Founders Edition coolers, inspects both the cooler and PCB, identifies the replacement parts, provides a written scope and quote, and explains warranty implications.

The RTX 4090 Founders Edition is a three-slot graphics card, and NVIDIA’s installation guidance calls for adequate space around the card and its power cables. That general guidance does not show that transport or a particular case orientation caused this reported detachment.

For future moves, shut the system down, disconnect power, secure or remove a very heavy graphics card when practical, prevent the card from flexing in its slot, and keep the power connector from being bent or pulled. These are handling precautions, not a conclusion about this incident’s cause.
