The RTX 5070 is not a performance replacement for the RTX 4090. NVIDIA’s older flagship remains substantially faster for native rendering, 4K gaming, heavy ray tracing, path tracing, GPU rendering, and VRAM-intensive work. The RTX 5070 is the more efficient and compact option, with newer Blackwell features, DLSS Multi Frame Generation support, lower power requirements, and a much lower historical launch price.

DLSS can make the RTX 5070’s displayed frame rate look closer to an RTX 4090 in selected supported games, but generated frames are not equivalent to traditionally rendered frames. For a fair comparison, separate native rasterization, ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, latency, and image quality.

VIPERA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition Graphic Card
  • 16,384 NVIDIA CUDA Cores
  • Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and variable refresh rate as indicated in HDMI 2.1A
  • New streaming multiprocessors: up to 2x power and power efficiency
  • Fourth generation tensor cores: up to 2x AI power
  • Third-generation RT cores: up to 2x ray tracing performance

Is the RTX 5070 faster than the RTX 4090?

No—not in normal native rendering. The RTX 4090 has more than twice as many CUDA cores, twice the VRAM, twice the memory-bus width, 50% more memory bandwidth, and nearly twice the advertised RT throughput. Those differences matter in rasterized games, ray tracing, rendering, and workloads that cannot rely on AI-generated frames.

The 5070’s near-identical boost clock does not change that conclusion. CUDA-core count, architecture, cache, memory behavior, drivers, and game engines all affect performance, so specifications cannot be converted directly into an FPS percentage. The published ratios are useful context, not predicted benchmark results.

Independent testing describes the RTX 5070 as a strong 1440p card, while also identifying situations where its 12GB memory buffer limits ray-traced performance. See TechSpot’s RTX 5070 review and GamersNexus’ RTX 5070 analysis for tested behavior.

How DLSS 4 changes the comparison

The RTX 5070 supports newer Blackwell features, including DLSS 4-era Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s current product page labels its software suite DLSS 4.5; launch coverage and older documentation may refer to DLSS 4. Exact support depends on the game, driver, and implementation.

  • DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render.
  • Frame Generation inserts AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation can generate multiple frames per rendered frame on supported RTX 50-series hardware.

These technologies can substantially improve displayed smoothness, but they do not give the 5070 the same rendering throughput as a 4090 producing those frames traditionally. Input latency is tied primarily to the underlying rendered frame rate and the game’s pipeline. Artifacts can also vary with motion, user-interface elements, and the quality of each game’s implementation.

A claim that the RTX 5070 “matches” the RTX 4090 may therefore be true only in a carefully selected DLSS comparison. Both cards must be tested with equivalent feature settings, and the results should show base rendered FPS, upscaled FPS, generated FPS, latency, and image-quality observations. GamersNexus specifically warned against comparing 5070 Multi Frame Generation results with 4090 results that do not use equivalent frame-generation treatment.

Gaming: 1440p or 4K?

1440p

For a new 1440p gaming system, the RTX 5070 is usually the more rational choice—particularly when available near its historical $549 launch MSRP. It offers enough performance for many demanding games, lower power consumption, a smaller card, and access to current Blackwell features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTX 4090 can be excessive for ordinary 1440p gaming. It becomes more defensible for very high-refresh displays, demanding ray tracing, heavily modded games, simulation workloads, or buyers who want substantial VRAM headroom. A fast CPU may also become the limiting factor at 1440p with a 4090, so the GPU alone does not guarantee higher FPS.

4K

The RTX 4090 is the clear hardware choice for 4K when the priority is native rendering, maximum ray tracing, path tracing, high-resolution texture packs, mods, or higher minimum FPS. Its 24GB framebuffer provides far more room for demanding games and creative workloads.

The RTX 5070 can play at 4K with upscaling and sensible settings, but its 12GB VRAM is a significant qualification. TechSpot reported serious problems in some ray-traced workloads when that memory limit was reached. That does not make 12GB universally inadequate: it can be sufficient for many 1440p scenarios and some 4K configurations. It does mean the 5070 has much less headroom for future games, path tracing, large texture packs, and mods.

Ray tracing and path tracing

The RTX 5070 has newer fourth-generation RT cores and Blackwell-specific neural-rendering features. The RTX 4090 has third-generation RT cores but a much larger GPU and a higher advertised RT figure: 191 RT TFLOPS versus 94 RT TFLOPS for the 5070.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In supported DLSS titles, the 5070 may offer rendering features unavailable on the 4090, especially Multi Frame Generation. In native or minimally assisted ray tracing, however, the 4090 should remain faster. At 4K, its extra VRAM is particularly important. Path tracing can expose the 5070’s memory limitation before its newer architecture becomes decisive.

“Newer RT cores” therefore does not mean “faster overall ray tracing.” The result depends on the game, resolution, settings, upscaling, frame generation, and whether the workload fits comfortably within 12GB.

AI, rendering, and content creation

Neither card is universally better for creators. The deciding factors are the application, VRAM requirement, codec, and whether the workload benefits more from raw GPU resources or newer specialized hardware.

  • Higher raw performance in applications using CUDA or OptiX.
  • Two eighth-generation NVENC encoders, which can matter for some multi-stream or creator workflows.

Where the RTX 5070 is stronger

  • Fifth-generation Tensor Cores and newer Blackwell AI features.
  • A ninth-generation NVENC encoder and sixth-generation NVDEC.
  • Lower power consumption and easier cooling.
  • Potentially better support for current-generation AI features in compatible software.

CUDA, OptiX, TensorRT, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe applications, local AI tools, and video encoders may respond differently to architecture, VRAM, and codec support. Check the requirements of the exact application rather than choosing based only on the GPU generation.

Power, size, and build compatibility

The RTX 5070 is rated at 250W, compared with 450W for the RTX 4090. NVIDIA recommends a 650W system power supply for the 5070 and 850W for the 4090. Actual system consumption varies with the CPU, board design, workload, and power limits, while acoustic performance depends heavily on the individual cooler.

The Founders Edition RTX 5070 is 242mm long and two slots thick. The RTX 4090 Founders Edition is 304mm long, three slots thick, and 61mm wide. Partner cards can be larger than either reference design, so check the specific model against GPU length, slot clearance, radiator position, and side-panel space.

For the RTX 5070, NVIDIA specifies either the included adapter using two PCIe 8-pin cables or a 300W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. The RTX 4090 requires either three PCIe 8-pin cables through its adapter or a 450W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. Ensure high-power connectors are fully inserted, use the required number of separate cables, and avoid sharply bending the cable directly at the plug. An ATX 3.x power supply with the appropriate native cable is the cleaner choice where available.

PCIe 5.0 is a platform advantage for the 5070, but it should not be treated as a major gaming-performance advantage over the RTX 4090’s PCIe 4.0 interface in a normal full-x16 desktop slot.

Price and value: new RTX 5070 versus used RTX 4090

The RTX 5070’s historical launch MSRP was $549; the RTX 4090 launched at $1,599. Neither figure should be treated as a current buying recommendation. The 5070 is generally evaluated as a new product, while a 4090 purchase may involve used stock or remaining inventory. Compare actual prices on the day you buy, including warranty coverage and the cost of the supporting system.

A 4090 can be compelling when its price is close to a new higher-midrange card and you value raw performance or 24GB of VRAM. But an inflated used price can erase its value advantage. The RTX 5070 becomes the better buy when it is near MSRP and your priority is efficient 1440p gaming, a compact build, or current Blackwell features.

If 16GB of VRAM is more important than the standard 5070’s lower price, the RTX 5070 Ti is a logical adjacent option. Buyers seeking a genuine current flagship replacement should consider a higher-tier product such as the RTX 5090, accepting its much greater price and system requirements.

Used RTX 4090 inspection checklist

Before buying a used 4090, insist on return protection and inspect:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GPU-Z identification, BIOS information, and VRAM detection.
  • Benchmark stability under a sustained load, including minimum FPS or frame-time behavior.
  • Core temperature, hotspot temperature, fan noise, and signs of thermal throttling.
  • VRAM stability using an appropriate memory test.
  • The 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 connector and cable for discoloration, damage, looseness, or incomplete insertion.
  • Evidence of previous mining, extreme overclocking, repeated overheating, or repair.
  • Remaining or transferable warranty, confirmed with the board manufacturer.

These checks reduce risk; they do not guarantee that a used card has no future failure.

Which GPU should you choose?

Choose the RTX 5070 if:

  • You are buying new near its historical $549 MSRP.
  • You mainly play at 1440p.
  • You want lower power consumption, easier cooling, or a smaller case.
  • You want Blackwell features and DLSS Multi Frame Generation.
  • Your games and applications fit comfortably within 12GB of VRAM.
  • You benefit from newer NVENC, NVDEC, or AI hardware.

Choose the RTX 4090 if:

  • You want the highest native gaming performance between these two cards.
  • You play at 4K with ray tracing or path tracing.
  • You use high-resolution textures, mods, large scenes, or VRAM-heavy AI models.
  • You perform GPU rendering that benefits from its larger GPU.
  • You find a tested, reliable used card at a genuinely compelling price.

If you already own an RTX 4090

Keep it if your goal is higher FPS, demanding 4K gaming, or VRAM-heavy work. Moving to an RTX 5070 is a feature, efficiency, warranty, or size decision—not a conventional performance upgrade. It can make sense for a smaller system, lower electricity use, easier cooling, or access to newer Blackwell features, but DLSS 4 alone is not a reason to expect faster native performance.

Final verdict

The RTX 4090 wins raw performance, native 4K gaming, demanding ray tracing, and VRAM capacity. The RTX 5070 wins efficiency, physical size, platform features, and likely value when purchased near its launch MSRP. The best value depends on the actual price of a new 5070 versus a used or remaining-stock 4090, not on launch MSRP alone.

Do not use a DLSS-generated FPS headline as proof that the RTX 5070 equals the RTX 4090. For traditional rendering and demanding VRAM-heavy workloads, the 4090 remains the stronger GPU. For a new, compact, lower-power 1440p build, the 5070 is the more practical choice.
