RTX 5080 vs. RTX 5070 Ti: Which GPU Is Better for 4K Gaming?

By VGSources Team 10 min read

The RTX 5080 is the faster 4K gaming GPU in TechRadar’s direct comparison, with results ranging from a small lead in some games to roughly 5–15% overall across its test suite. The RTX 5070 Ti still makes sense when its live price is substantially lower, when 1440p is part of your workload, or when you are comfortable using DLSS in demanding 4K games. Both cards have 16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, so the decision is primarily about performance headroom, price, power and the type of 4K experience you want.

Quick answer: which card should a 4K gamer buy?

Choose the GeForce RTX 5080 if you want the higher frame rate in the comparison games and would rather leave more performance headroom for demanding 4K settings. Choose the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti if the current price gap is large enough to matter, your monitor is 1440p as often as 4K, or you are willing to use upscaling and frame generation selectively.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That conclusion is based on a controlled TechRadar comparison, not on a promise that one card wins every game by the same percentage. The review’s RTX 5080 advantage varies by title and rendering mode. Retail prices, availability, partner-card designs and system requirements also change, so the launch-price difference is useful context rather than a current buying quote.

What the direct 4K tests actually show

TechRadar tested both cards in the same comparison and reported average frame rates for five games. The results are the clearest evidence for the performance question, but each number must be read with its rendering mode and preset. Black Myth: Wukong used 50% upscaling for the RTX 5080 result; Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus were reported at native 4K; the other entries used the stated quality presets.

Game RTX 5080 result RTX 5070 Ti result Mode or preset reported by TechRadar
Black Myth: Wukong 75 fps 69 fps 50% upscaling
Cyberpunk 2077 68 fps 59 fps Native 4K, Ultra
Dying Light 2 119 fps 103 fps High Quality
Returnal 104 fps 89 fps Epic
Metro Exodus 58 fps 56 fps Native 4K, Ultra

Across this particular suite, TechRadar summarizes the RTX 5080’s lead as approximately 5% to 15%, depending on the game and test conditions. The Metro Exodus result is close, while the gaps are more visible in Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2 and Returnal. These are reviewer averages, not guaranteed results for every game, driver version, processor or graphics preset. You can read the complete comparison at TechRadar’s RTX 5080 versus RTX 5070 Ti test.

Why the lead matters more at 4K

At 4K, the graphics processor generally does more of the work than it does at 1440p. A 5–15% advantage can therefore be the difference between staying near a monitor’s refresh target and dropping below it when a scene becomes busy. It can also give you room to keep a higher ray-tracing preset or avoid reducing texture, shadow and lighting quality. The practical value depends on your target: a 60 Hz display makes a 58-to-68 fps change meaningful in some games, while a 144 Hz display exposes the limits of both cards in the most demanding titles.

What the table does not prove

The table does not establish that the RTX 5080 is always 15% faster, that either card will render every game at 60 fps, or that an upscaled result equals native 4K image quality. It also does not isolate CPU limits, game patches or driver changes outside the review setup. Use it as a directional comparison between these two GPUs under TechRadar’s conditions.

Native 4K, upscaled 4K and generated frames are different claims

Before comparing screenshots or benchmark numbers, identify how each frame was produced:

  • Native 4K: the game renders at 3840×2160 before any spatial upscaling. This is the most direct measure of raw rendering at the target resolution, although anti-aliasing and other processing still affect image quality.
  • Upscaled 4K: the game renders internally below 3840×2160 and reconstructs a 4K output. The Black Myth: Wukong result in the cited comparison used 50% upscaling, so it should not be compared as if it were native rendering.
  • Frame generation: the GPU inserts AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. It can raise the displayed frame rate and improve perceived fluidity, but the generated frames are not equivalent to additional fully rendered game frames.

NVIDIA’s current RTX 5070 family page lists DLSS 4 features including Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation, and the comparison treats both GPUs as supporting those features. See the official specifications at NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5070 family page. A fair buying decision should record the mode beside every result: “native,” “upscaled,” and “frame-generated” describe different performance and latency trade-offs.

When DLSS helps

Upscaling can make a 4K game playable at a higher displayed frame rate when native rendering falls short. Frame generation can make camera motion appear smoother in supported games. Neither technique removes the underlying cost of producing the base frames, and neither changes the fact that a native result is a different workload. If you are sensitive to input latency or visual artifacts, evaluate the base frame rate and image quality rather than selecting a card solely on a generated-frame counter.

Core specifications: what separates the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti?

The direct comparison gives both cards the same memory capacity, memory-bus width and PCIe interface. The RTX 5080’s advantage comes from a larger shader count and higher memory bandwidth, while its reference power rating is also higher.

Specification RTX 5080 RTX 5070 Ti
CUDA/shader cores 10,752 8,960
Video memory 16 GB GDDR7 16 GB GDDR7
Memory interface 256-bit 256-bit
Memory bandwidth 960 GB/s 896 GB/s
Interface PCIe 5.0 x16 PCIe 5.0 x16
Reference graphics power 360 W, as listed in TechRadar’s comparison table 300 W
Reference required system power Not stated in the cited sources 750 W, according to NVIDIA’s reference specification

NVIDIA’s product page confirms 8,960 CUDA cores, 16 GB GDDR7, a 256-bit interface and 300 W total graphics power for the reference RTX 5070 Ti configuration. NVIDIA also cautions that add-in-card specifications can vary, so the values above do not replace the specifications for a particular board partner’s model. The comparison’s RTX 5080 figures come from TechRadar’s review table; consult the exact card’s listing for its power connector, dimensions and factory settings.

16 GB is not a differentiator here

Both cards carry 16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus. That means the RTX 5080 does not offer a capacity advantage for large textures or high-resolution assets. Its extra bandwidth and shader resources can still improve throughput, but a game that exceeds 16 GB of usable video memory will not be rescued by choosing the 5080. Check the game’s settings and actual memory usage instead of assuming the faster GPU has more capacity.

Launch price versus the price you will pay now

NVIDIA announced US launch prices of $999 for the RTX 5080 and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti on January 6, 2025. TechRadar lists January 30, 2025 as the RTX 5080 launch date and February 20, 2025 for the RTX 5070 Ti. Those are historical launch figures, not current street prices. The announcement is documented in NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 release.

The $250 launch gap represented about one-third of the RTX 5070 Ti’s launch price, but that relationship can disappear when one card is discounted, scarce or sold as a premium factory-overclocked model. Compare like for like: include the card’s cooler, warranty, dimensions, shipping, taxes and any required power-supply upgrade.

A practical price-per-performance test

  1. Write down the current delivered price of the exact RTX 5080 model you would buy.
  2. Write down the equivalent RTX 5070 Ti model, including shipping and tax.
  3. Subtract the two prices to find the real premium, rather than using the 2025 launch MSRP gap.
  4. Use the TechRadar game results as a performance reference, while remembering that the suite is not a guarantee for your library.
  5. Decide whether the extra cost buys a meaningful outcome for your monitor: a steadier 60 fps, less aggressive upscaling or more headroom for ray tracing.

If the premium is small, the RTX 5080’s higher results make the decision straightforward. If the premium is large, the RTX 5070 Ti can be the more sensible purchase, particularly when the alternative is reducing your monitor, storage or CPU budget.

Power, PSU and case compatibility

The reference power figures are 360 W for the RTX 5080 in TechRadar’s comparison and 300 W total graphics power for the RTX 5070 Ti in NVIDIA’s specification. NVIDIA lists a 750 W required system power for its reference RTX 5070 Ti configuration. Do not apply that 750 W figure automatically to every build, and do not infer a universal RTX 5080 PSU requirement from the comparison table.

Check the complete system before ordering

  • Read the exact card manufacturer’s recommended PSU rating and connector requirement.
  • Measure the case’s GPU clearance, including front radiators, drive cages and side-panel space.
  • Confirm that your power supply has the required native connector or an approved adapter arrangement.
  • Account for your CPU, storage, fans, pumps and USB-powered devices when assessing system power.
  • Verify motherboard slot clearance: a thick cooler can block adjacent expansion slots even when the card technically fits.

Partner cards can use different coolers, factory power limits, connector layouts and dimensions. A compact RTX 5070 Ti and a large RTX 5080 are not interchangeable from a fit or cabling perspective, even though both use PCIe 5.0 x16. Save the product page for the exact model until you have checked every measurement.

Choose the RTX 5080 when these conditions describe you

You want the highest result from this comparison

The RTX 5080 leads in all five reported games. The difference is modest in Metro Exodus and larger in several of the other entries, so the benefit is most apparent when a demanding title is already close to your frame-rate target.

You prefer native rendering or heavier settings

More GPU headroom lets you postpone compromises such as lowering ray tracing, shadows or volumetric effects. It does not guarantee native 4K at a fixed refresh rate, but it gives you a better starting point before enabling DLSS or reducing a preset.

Your current price premium is reasonable

Use today’s listings, not the 2025 MSRP, to judge the premium. A small difference favors the faster card; a large difference can make the 5070 Ti’s value stronger.

Your power and case budget can absorb it

The 5080’s 360 W reference rating and potentially larger partner coolers can affect PSU, thermals and case choices. Confirm those details before paying for performance you cannot install safely.

Choose the RTX 5070 Ti when these conditions describe you

You play at 1440p as well as 4K

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 graphics-card roundup describes the RTX 5070 Ti as a versatile 1440p option and reports 60-plus fps at 4K in some of its tests. Those tests are not a controlled head-to-head against the RTX 5080, but they illustrate why the 5070 Ti can suit a mixed-resolution setup. Read the roundup at Tom’s Guide’s 2026 graphics-card guide for that separate testing context.

The live price gap is large

When a 5070 Ti costs substantially less than a comparable 5080, the saved money can fund a higher-refresh monitor, a larger SSD or a more capable CPU. The card remains a 16 GB GDDR7 GPU with the same 256-bit bus, so you are not giving up memory capacity to save money.

You are comfortable with selective DLSS use

At 4K, you may choose native rendering in lighter games and Super Resolution in heavier ones. Frame generation can improve perceived smoothness in supported titles, but assess latency and the underlying rendered frame rate before relying on it.

Your case or PSU has less margin

The 300 W reference graphics-power figure is lower than the 5080’s 360 W comparison rating, although the exact partner card still determines the final requirement. A lower-power design can simplify an existing build, provided the manufacturer specifications match your system.

How to compare specific cards at checkout

  1. Identify the exact GPU model. Record the manufacturer, cooler version, factory clock, length, height, thickness and listed weight.
  2. Check power details. Note the connector type, number of cables, recommended PSU and whether the card uses a higher-than-reference power limit.
  3. Confirm physical clearance. Compare the card’s dimensions with your case’s maximum GPU length and available slot thickness.
  4. Compare delivered prices. Include shipping, taxes, return terms and warranty rather than comparing headline prices only.
  5. Match the card to your display. A 4K 60 Hz panel, 4K high-refresh panel and 1440p monitor create different value thresholds.
  6. Set expectations for software features. Check that your games support the DLSS features you intend to use and decide whether you prefer native output, Super Resolution or frame generation.

Doing this model-by-model comparison prevents a low advertised price from hiding a three-slot cooler, an unsuitable connector arrangement or a PSU requirement your current system cannot meet.

Common mistakes when comparing these GPUs

Using MSRP as if it were today’s price

The $999 and $749 figures belong to January 2025 launch announcements. They are useful historical anchors, but stock and retail pricing have changed since then.

Calling an upscaled result “native 4K”

The Black Myth: Wukong result used 50% upscaling. Labeling it native would overstate the rendering workload and make the comparison misleading.

Counting generated frames as rendered frames

Frame generation changes displayed smoothness, not the amount of traditionally rendered game work in the same way. Keep the base frame rate, latency and visual artifacts in view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming 16 GB makes the cards identical

Capacity is equal, but shader resources and bandwidth differ. Conversely, the 5080’s extra throughput does not increase its memory capacity beyond 16 GB.

Buying by GPU name without checking the partner card

Dimensions, connectors, cooling and power limits vary. NVIDIA explicitly notes that add-in-card specifications can differ from its reference configuration.

Final buying framework

Start with your display and target mode, then check the live price. For native 4K or demanding 4K settings, the RTX 5080 is the performance choice established by the cited direct comparison. For a mixed 1440p/4K library, selective DLSS use and a meaningfully lower current price, the RTX 5070 Ti is the value-oriented choice. Neither card has a memory-capacity advantage: both provide 16 GB of GDDR7 and a 256-bit interface.

Before placing an order, verify the exact model’s dimensions, connectors, cooling and PSU recommendation against your complete PC. That final compatibility check is as important as the benchmark gap, because a faster GPU that does not fit or cannot be powered correctly is not a better gaming upgrade.
