The claim began as a rumor, and Xbox has since identified Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. The company has not announced a consumer release date, price, final specifications, or settled policy on exclusivity.
Where the software-publishing rumor stands
The rumor suggested Xbox might abandon first-party consoles and focus on publishing games for other platforms, leaving the next generation uncertain. It was not an announced company decision. In October 2025, Microsoft responded to a Windows Central report by saying it was actively investing in future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered, and built by Xbox. In March 2026, Xbox publicly named Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. That makes a software-only future inconsistent with the direction Xbox has publicly described, though company plans and product timelines can change.
What Xbox has confirmed about Project Helix
On March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of Next Generation, said the team was developing Project Helix. He described it as a console designed to play Xbox console and PC games, powered by a custom AMD system-on-chip. The stated developer milestone is not a retail launch announcement.

Why doubts about Xbox hardware persist
Xbox has acknowledged that hardware plans face financial and supply constraints. In a June 2026 reset message, the company said it could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy and that it needed “a new business model and partnerships for hardware” while remaining committed to Helix. Those statements describe pressure on the business, not a cancellation announcement. Xbox’s June 2026 message
Xbox attributed part of the challenge to rising storage-component costs. It said those costs were more than twice the previous fall’s level after Asha Sharma became CEO in February 2026, had doubled again, and were expected to rise significantly by the 2027 holiday planning horizon—exceeding five times the price paid two years earlier. These are Xbox’s own reported figures and forecast, not an independently verified market measurement or a confirmed later outcome.

The company also said it expected an accountability margin of about 3% for the fiscal year, down year over year. It reported that revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars over five years despite more than $20 billion in investments during that period, excluding Activision Blizzard King. These figures are Xbox’s characterization of its business position. They help explain why it is reconsidering hardware economics; they do not establish that it will stop making hardware.
In a separate June 2026 interview reported by Windows Central, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Mathew Ball said the company was working to rethink Helix and remained committed to shipping it, while discussing affordability and flexibility amid component-cost pressures. Xbox’s strategy covers more than a console
Xbox’s stated direction is a multi-device platform strategy, not simply a return to a console-only business. In its April 2026 strategy statement, Xbox described console as the foundation of its platform, with cloud extending the experience to other devices. It identified hardware, content, experience, and services as priorities. Xbox’s April 2026 strategy statement
Xbox’s June reset message also described work across hardware, PC, mobile, and streaming. The company said its services reached more than 1 billion players and recorded 72 billion hours across console, PC, mobile, and streaming in a year, with exclusions including much of China and some other properties. Those are company-published figures, not an independent count.

In October 2026, Windows Central reported comments from CEO Asha Sharma at a town hall describing “Gen 10” as a “family of devices,” with a console first and options for players on the go. That is reporting on an internal meeting; it does not confirm which devices will ship or identify manufacturers. Windows Central’s town hall report

Xbox is already evaluating how its games are published across platforms, but its public statements do not establish a final future release policy. In April 2026, Xbox said it would reevaluate exclusivity and release windows. That is evidence of a review—not a promise that every first-party game will launch on competing platforms, nor a guarantee that games will remain exclusive to Xbox.

It is useful to separate two questions: whether Xbox will continue to make first-party hardware, and where Xbox publishes its games. Project Helix is evidence of an announced hardware direction. The exclusivity and publishing balance remains unsettled in the statements cited here.
What has not been announced
- A consumer launch date for Project Helix. The 2027 date applies to planned developer alpha hardware.
- A retail price, final specifications, or final hardware design.
- A confirmed retail lineup of partner or portable devices.
- A final policy for exclusivity, release windows, or the share of first-party games released on competing platforms.
Xbox’s commitments describe its current intentions; they do not guarantee that every feature, device, or milestone will ship as stated.
How to read the next Xbox announcements
To judge whether Xbox is changing direction, look for concrete answers in five areas rather than treating broad strategy language as a launch plan:
- First-party hardware: Does Xbox continue to develop and ship a console under its own brand?
- Game compatibility: Does the hardware run Xbox console games, PC games, or both, and what does that mean for existing libraries?
- Device lineup: Does Xbox announce additional partner or portable devices, and who makes them?
- Publishing policy: Which first-party games, if any, launch on competing platforms, and when?
- Price and availability: What retail price and supply can Xbox support given the component costs it has described?
Until Xbox provides those details, the strongest supported conclusion is that it is developing a next-generation console while broadening its platform beyond console hardware and reassessing how the business works.
