Rats in a modified Doom setup learned to navigate a virtual environment and operate a physical shooting trigger, according to project lead Viktor Tóth. That is a striking engineering and training milestone—not evidence that the animals beat a Doom level or understood its goals. The project says advanced training was unfinished and full behavioral validation still requires longer training.
What the rats learned to do
The Rats Play Doom Project reports that its rats learned to navigate the virtual environment and trigger the shooting mechanism. The qualification matters: the project also says its advanced training was not completed, and its limitations section says the v2 rats reached habituation but aged out before full testing. The project therefore describes promising interaction with the system, not a completed, independently validated demonstration of rats playing Doom as a human player would.

Project lead Viktor Tóth puts the limitation plainly: “Full behavioral validation requires longer training periods.” The project reports roughly two weeks of habituation per rat; that is a project-specific account, not a general benchmark for rat training. Rats Play Doom Project
How the Doom setup works
The animals do not control the game through an implanted neural interface. Instead, sensors translate their movement on a spherical treadmill into movement in a modified Doom environment. In the later version, a physical trigger adds a shooting input. A reward system reinforces the behavior, while sensory feedback helps connect the virtual environment to the animal’s actions.

How the original and later versions differ
| Aspect | Original experiment | Later v2 setup |
|---|---|---|
| Movement and environment | Spherical treadmill and motion sensing mapped movement into a simplified Doom II corridor; the author says that, in most sessions, only one axis of motion was registered. | Motion-tracked sphere and a curved panoramic display, with a modified ViZDoom environment. |
| Shooting input | Shooting was attempted in two sessions. Tóth described the trials as insufficient and confusing for the rat. | A physical trigger provides a shooting input; the project reports that rats learned to trigger it, while full behavioral validation remains incomplete. |
| Feedback and reward | Reward delivery was part of the setup; the original account describes two Arduino microcontrollers managing the electronics. | Air-puff sensory feedback and liquid reward are part of the expanded system; the project describes a PC and Raspberry Pi in the v2 setup. |
| Reported evidence | The author reported movement through a simplified environment, with little shooting training and no turns incorporated into most sessions. | The project reports navigation and trigger behavior, but also says advanced training was unfinished and its v2 rats aged out after habituation before full testing. |
These are two stages of one project, not a controlled comparison proving that one system produces better performance. Tóth’s original account says the first experiment involved three male Long Evans rats and about six weeks of work, including habituation and 11 days of Doom training. He also wrote that, although left-right turning mechanisms were present, he did not have time to train turns into the animals’ movements. Tóth’s account of the original experiment

Did the rats shoot demons or beat a Doom level?
The project and coverage support saying that the later system enabled the rats to trigger a shooting mechanism. They do not establish that the animals completed a level, reliably defeated enemies, or understood the game’s objectives. The hardware can accept multiple inputs and evaluate reward-related behavior, but that capability is not the same as proof of full gameplay. Tom’s Hardware describes the updated shooting setup and its external controls: Tom’s Hardware coverage.
Why build a Doom environment for rats?
Tóth’s stated motivation is to explore whether animals can perform varied behavior in a stationary setup while researchers record neural activity, and whether modifiable game environments might serve as experimental spaces. The Doom project demonstrates an approach to movement input, feedback, and reward delivery; it does not itself demonstrate a new neuroscience method or report neural-recording results.

The distinction between engineering and behavioral evidence is central here. Building a system that maps movement to a game and accepts a trigger input is an engineering achievement. Establishing what an animal has learned, how consistently it performs, and what it understands requires further behavioral testing. PC Gamer’s report quotes the project’s caution that full validation needs longer training: PC Gamer coverage.

“Rats trained to shoot in Doom” is a fair shorthand for the project’s report that the animals learned to operate a physical trigger in a Doom environment. It should not be read as a claim that they completed Doom, played with human-like intent, or proved a general result about rat cognition. The project’s own account leaves advanced training and full behavioral validation unresolved.
