Chrome’s Dinosaur Game is the T-Rex endless runner that appears on Chrome’s network-error page when the browser cannot reach the internet. It is not a malfunction: Google designed it as an offline easter egg in 2014. The game can also be opened while online at chrome://dino.
Its most famous fact is also the easiest to misunderstand. Google says the game was designed to max out at approximately 17 million years—a playful reference to the period its creators associated with Tyrannosaurus rex, not a normal final level or a precise scientific measurement.

What is Chrome Dino?
Chrome Dino, also called the Chrome Dinosaur Game, T-Rex Game, No Internet Game, Offline Dinosaur Game or informally Dino Run, is a built-in endless runner in Chrome’s network-error experience. It is not normally installed as a separate game.
When Chrome cannot load a page because there is no connection, a pixel-art T-Rex appears on a desert landscape. Pressing the start key sends it running. The aim is simple: avoid obstacles for as long as possible while the score increases with distance.

How to play Chrome Dino
Play while offline
- Open Chrome while the device has no internet connection.
- Navigate to a page so Chrome displays its network-error screen.
- Press Spacebar to start on a desktop computer.
- Use Spacebar or Up Arrow to jump.
- Use Down Arrow to duck.
- Press Enter after a crash to restart.
These keyboard mappings are defined in Chromium’s Dino game source.
Play while online
You do not need to disconnect your internet connection. Enter this internal Chrome address in the address bar:

Google created this direct route as an “arcade mode” so users could play without waiting for an outage. It is a Chrome internal URL, not an ordinary public website, so it may not work in other browsers or on a managed device that restricts internal pages.
Mobile controls
On phones and tablets, the game starts and is controlled through touch input. Exact behavior can vary between Android, iOS and different Chrome builds. Chromium’s source history includes platform-specific mobile changes, including later iOS fixes.
Why did Google put a dinosaur in an error page?
The concept emerged in early 2014. The designers imagined losing internet access as a return to a prehistoric era, represented by a T-Rex crossing a desert filled with cacti. They chose a deliberately spare pixel-art style and reduced the controls to the essentials of an endless runner: run, jump and duck.
The first version was submitted as part of a network-error-page redesign in September 2014. Google’s retrospective says that after problems on older Android devices, the game was rewritten and scaled to all platforms by December 2014.

What does Project Bolan mean?
The game’s internal development codename was Project Bolan. According to Google’s Chrome team, “Bolan” refers to Marc Bolan, the frontman of the rock band T. Rex. The name is a joke connecting a dinosaur character with the band’s name.
Cacti, pterodactyls and night mode
The basic challenge is collision avoidance. Ground-based cacti require a jump, while flying pterodactyls can require either a jump or a duck depending on their height. As a run continues, the game becomes faster, reducing the time available to react.
The scenery also changes. Chrome Dino can invert its day-and-night presentation, turning the bright desert into a dark landscape. Google identifies pterodactyls and night mode as later additions to the original concept.
A collision ends the ordinary run. The game also includes score milestones and sound effects, although audio and platform behavior can differ by device and browser version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does Chrome Dino really run for 17 million years?
Google says the game was designed to max out at approximately 17 million years. The figure was chosen as a humorous reference to the amount of time the developers associated with T. rex’s existence on Earth.
That wording matters:
- It is approximately 17 million years, not a precise paleontological measurement presented by the source.
- “Max out” describes a design limit, not a conventional final level, boss fight or story ending.
- It is not a universal score value. Google’s statement does not establish one fixed score at which every current Chrome build ends.
- It is not accurate to call the game literally infinite under every implementation. During ordinary play it behaves as an endless runner, but Google separately describes a distant maximum.
In practice, a normal player will almost certainly crash into an obstacle long before reaching that theoretical limit. Modified code, automation and unofficial recreations can also change the rules, so claims about a universal ending should be treated cautiously.
The surprisingly serious engineering behind a simple game
Chrome Dino looks minimal, but the implementation has to handle running animation, jump physics, gravity, collision detection, obstacle generation, speed increases, scoring, sound, touch input and restarting. Chromium’s public source also includes arcade-mode logic and gamepad-related event handling.

Older Chromium JavaScript exposed representative configuration values including a nominal speed of 6, acceleration of 0.001, maximum speed of 13, gravity of 0.6 and an initial jump velocity of 12. Those values come from an older tagged implementation, not a guarantee about every current Chrome release.
The game’s code has continued to change. Chromium made accessibility improvements in 2024, including a descriptive page title, revised screen-reader announcements, an ARIA label describing the game and its Spacebar start action, and a spoken description of the dinosaur dodging cacti and pterodactyls. In 2025, Chromium recorded a TypeScript migration and an iOS-related fix. The built-in game is therefore maintained software, not a frozen 2014 artifact.
How popular was it?
Google reported in 2018 that approximately 270 million Dino games were played each month across laptop and mobile. This is a historical figure from Google’s 2018 account, not a current 2026 usage statistic.
Google said the game was especially useful in markets where mobile data was unreliable or expensive. It turned a connectivity failure into a short, playable interruption. The company also said some schools and workplaces needed a way to disable it because students and employees were spending too much time playing.
Is Chrome Dino open source?
The implementation is publicly present in the Chromium source tree, including the network-error Dino resources and TypeScript files such as offline.ts. That makes Chromium’s code a useful reference for controls and architecture.

Can the game be beaten?
There are three different meanings of “beaten”:
- Normal play: a run usually ends when the T-Rex collides with an obstacle.
- Design maximum: Google says the game was built to max out at approximately 17 million years.
- Modified play: developer tools, altered source, automation or fan-made versions can remove or change ordinary limits.
So Chrome Dino has no normal level-by-level ending, but “endless” should not be interpreted as proof that every version runs forever without a cap.
Cheats, clones and common misconceptions
Developer-tool cheats
Older tutorials show ways to alter the game’s JavaScript, such as changing speed or bypassing game-over behavior. Those instructions may target older code and can fail after Chromium’s refactoring and TypeScript migration. They also make resulting scores incomparable with ordinary runs.
Developer tools can be useful for learning about game logic, but a modified run is not a legitimate high score under the normal rules. The current Chromium source is a more reliable technical reference than a copy-and-paste cheat command from an old tutorial.
Third-party websites and extensions
Online clones can be convenient if you are not using Chrome, and some add skins, leaderboards or other features. They are not automatically Google products. Extensions also add permissions, privacy and maintenance considerations that are unnecessary for playing the built-in game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf chrome://dino fails, possible explanations include using a non-Chrome browser, a customized Chromium build, a network-error page without the embedded game, a managed device policy or a focus problem. Click the game area before trying the controls, and remember that mobile behavior can differ from desktop behavior.
The bottom line
Chrome Dino is a carefully engineered offline easter egg disguised as a tiny distraction. It began as a 2014 joke about returning to a prehistoric, pre-internet world, grew into a widely played endurance game, and has continued to receive platform and accessibility updates. You can play it offline from Chrome’s error page or online at chrome://dino. And yes, Google says its design maximum is approximately 17 million years—but that is a playful technical limit, not a normal finish line.
