To run MediaMTX as a service on Ubuntu, install its executable and configuration, create a systemd unit, enable and start that unit, then configure MediaMTX to forward a source stream to the current RTMPS destination shown in YouTube Studio. This can start MediaMTX on boot and keep the relay available while its publisher is offline; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube live stream. Your host, power, internet connection, source, and YouTube ingest must all remain available.
How the setup works
MediaMTX is the relay running on your Ubuntu host; YouTube is the destination. A separate source must publish a stream to MediaMTX, or MediaMTX must otherwise have a stream available to forward. MediaMTX describes itself as a media router and supports publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback. Its documentation presents it as a single executable for Linux, Windows, and macOS: MediaMTX introduction.
This distinction matters for a 24/7 channel: making MediaMTX a system service does not create video content by itself. If you want a prerecorded video to play continuously, the source needs to publish that video as a live stream; MediaMTX’s FFmpeg guide shows publishing a file in real time: Publish with FFmpeg.
What you need before installing
- An Ubuntu host using systemd, with power and network access suited to continuous operation.
- The current MediaMTX executable and configuration file. Check the current release and configuration reference before using version-specific instructions; the reference identifies the configuration it documents as MediaMTX v1.21.1, which may change: Configuration file reference.
- A working source that supplies both video and audio to MediaMTX.
- Access to the channel’s current live-stream settings in YouTube Studio, including its current ingest URL and stream key.
The available documentation does not establish channel eligibility, India-specific account requirements, or which ingest URL YouTube currently assigns to your channel. Confirm those details in YouTube Studio and current YouTube Help material rather than relying on an old endpoint or account-rule example.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install MediaMTX and configure systemd
MediaMTX’s Linux startup guide uses global executable and configuration paths and a systemd unit. Follow its current installation steps and adapt paths to the files you actually install: Start on boot (Linux).
- Install the executable and YAML configuration. The guide’s example places them at
/usr/local/bin/mediamtxand/usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml. If you choose different paths, use those same paths consistently in the service unit. - Create the systemd unit. The guide’s sample uses
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/mediamtx /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.ymland setsWantedBy=multi-user.target. Make sure the command points to your installed executable and configuration. - Reload systemd’s unit definitions. After creating or changing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadso systemd reads it. - Enable and start the service. Run
sudo systemctl enable mediamtxto configure startup at boot, thensudo systemctl start mediamtxto start it now. - Check the result. Run
systemctl status mediamtxand inspect recent logs withsudo journalctl -u mediamtx. Resolve any path, permissions, or configuration errors before proceeding.
The MediaMTX guide recommends enabling systemd-networkd-wait-online.service so startup waits for network initialization. Ubuntu installations may use different network management; adapt this to the host’s actual setup rather than assuming that service is present. The guide notes that systemd manages services on most Linux distributions, including Ubuntu and Debian: MediaMTX’s boot-start guide.

Forward MediaMTX to YouTube
- Get the destination from YouTube Studio. Open the channel’s current live-stream settings and copy the ingest URL and stream key displayed for the stream. Do not assume an example endpoint in another guide is still current.
- Configure MediaMTX’s forwarding destination. Use the RTMPS destination format in MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding instructions, substituting the current YouTube URL and your channel’s key in the appropriate configuration fields: Forward streams (YouTube).
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Do not publish it in screenshots, logs, public configuration repositories, or support messages. Restrict access to the configuration that contains it.
- Start the source and check both ends. Confirm the source publishes to the intended MediaMTX path, then inspect MediaMTX’s logs and YouTube Studio’s live preview or status to see whether YouTube receives the stream.
MediaMTX explicitly warns that YouTube requires both a video and an audio track; a video-only stream can be silently rejected. Confirm the outgoing stream contains both tracks before troubleshooting less likely causes. The forwarding guide also says to check YouTube for the current URL: MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guidance.
Test restarts and plan for 24/7 operation
Enabling the unit helps MediaMTX start after the Ubuntu host reboots. MediaMTX also documents serving always-available streams while a publisher is offline, but neither capability is an uptime guarantee for the host, network route, source, or YouTube delivery. The project describes authentication, recording, metrics, and performance-monitoring features; those tools can aid operations but do not promise uninterrupted service: MediaMTX introduction.

- After confirming the initial stream, restart the service and verify that it returns with
systemctl status mediamtxand the journal. - Test what happens when the source disconnects and reconnects. Confirm that your source resumes publishing and that forwarding recovers as expected.
- Monitor the Ubuntu host, source process, MediaMTX logs, and YouTube Studio status. Decide how you will be alerted if any of them stops delivering.
- Consider host reboots, power loss, internet outages, exhausted bandwidth or transfer allowances, source failures, and changes to YouTube’s ingest settings in your recovery plan.
A VPS or dedicated host may provide an always-on machine, but choosing one does not ensure a working route to YouTube or continuous delivery. Compare cost, bandwidth and outbound-transfer terms, route to the ingest endpoint, restart and monitoring controls, and your ability to maintain Ubuntu. No host price or provider is established here.

MediaMTX starts, but YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the source is publishing to the intended path, the forwarding destination matches the current YouTube Studio ingest URL, and the stream key is correct. Read MediaMTX logs for connection errors and check the YouTube live preview or status.
YouTube does not accept the forwarded video
Verify that the outgoing stream has both audio and video tracks. MediaMTX warns that YouTube may silently reject a video-only stream.

The service starts before networking is ready
If the host’s network is not initialized when MediaMTX starts, apply the boot guide’s network-wait recommendation where appropriate for the Ubuntu installation, then test a reboot and inspect the service logs.
The stream stops after a host, source, or network failure
Systemd boot startup addresses service startup after a host reboot; it does not by itself repair a failed source, restore an internet connection, or confirm that YouTube is receiving video. Identify which component failed, restore it, and check both MediaMTX logs and YouTube Studio before treating the channel as live again.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu relay, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works; card checkout is available worldwide. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
