It entered Steam Early Access on November 6, 2024, and remains labeled Early Access and free-to-play on its Steam listing. The game sends players from a guard recruit’s first days in Hopeport into a story divided across episodes, with distinct lands, quests and professions.
What is Brighter Shores?
Fen Research describes Brighter Shores as an adventure in a land of magic and mysteries; Steam categorizes it as a point-and-click-style RPG. The opening casts the player as a newly recruited town guard in Hopeport. A strange storm at the harbor, unrest among goblins and a threat in Hopeforest set up the early adventure. The official descriptions name three combat classes: Cryoknight, Guardian and Hammermage. These are the developer’s descriptions of the premise and game, not an independent assessment of how the systems play.
How do its professions and episodes fit together?
Professions are a central part of the activity loop beyond combat. The official site names nine: Fisher, Forager, Chef, Woodcutter, Miner, Alchemist, Stonemason, Merchant and Blacksmith. That episode structure also matters for access: the game is not presented as one fixed, complete package. Fen Research describes the Premium Pass as a way to access released episodes and additional stories, professions and places. Check the current offer for exactly what it includes.
When did Brighter Shores release, and is it still in Early Access?
Steam lists November 6, 2024 as both the release date and the start of Early Access. Its current store listing labels Brighter Shores Early Access. Fen Research says the game is unfinished and describes ongoing development, including additions and improvements; the developers also say they do not expect a point at which the game receives no further updates. The Steam Early Access description explains the decision to open the game before development is complete: “We want to let people start playing the game without having to wait even longer, but acknowledge that the game isn’t finished yet.” Steam attributes this statement to the developers, not to Gower personally.
What is known about the planned combat progression?
Fen Research has described a shift away from episode-specific combat professions toward one progression shared across episodes. The specifics have changed between developer updates, so those posts establish design intent and development progress—not that every part of the system is active in the current build.

The January 2025 proposal
In a January 9, 2025 post, Fen Research said episode-specific combat professions were discouraging some new players and proposed a shared profession. The proposal discussed episode level bands, caps, weapons, armor and an end-game obelisk mechanic, while explicitly noting that the plan was not final. [Fen Research]
The later progress update
A subsequent Fen Research progress update described a revised design: one global combat profession, no episode-specific combat professions or obelisk levels, initial combat levels reaching 2,000 across four episodes, and a level cap that would rise with each new episode. It also discussed personalized progression and related systems. The post said implementation was underway and hoped to launch soon; that is not confirmation of the feature’s exact status in a later live version. Is Brighter Shores free to play?
Steam labels Brighter Shores free-to-play, and Fen Research says players can play hours of content for free. An optional Premium Pass is the stated route to access released episodes. The sources cited here do not establish a current price or guarantee that every episode or feature is included in the pass, so check the live Steam listing or in-game offer before buying. What the announcement means for RuneScape players
Gower’s involvement makes Brighter Shores notable to RuneScape players, but the available official descriptions support a focused comparison rather than claims that the new game recreates or replaces RuneScape. Its stated identity is a point-and-click-style RPG with a guard-origin story, named combat classes, numerous professions and episode-based content. Its progression and paid access also depend on how Fen Research develops and releases those episodes. The game is available to try on Steam, with the qualification that it remains an Early Access project.
