Who bought Jagex?
Carlyle announced on 9 February 2024 that CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII and Haveli Investments had agreed to acquire Jagex. Carlyle was the seller; it had acquired the Cambridge-based game developer in 2021. The announced agreement was subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Jagex’s announcement did not disclose the transaction terms. The announcements also do not establish the buyers’ respective ownership shares or the exact date the sale legally closed.
Was Jagex really sold for $1.1 billion?
That is the approximate value reported for the pending purchase, not a figure confirmed by the parties. Canaccord Genuity’s February 2024 transaction report described the price as £900 million, approximately US$1.1 billion. It did not establish whether that figure represented equity value, enterprise value, or another transaction measure. Carlyle’s announcement and Jagex’s announcement said the terms were not disclosed.

What is Jagex, and what does it make?
Jagex is the Cambridge-based developer and publisher best known for the RuneScape games. The company says it was founded in Cambridge in 2000. RuneScape launched in January 2001; RuneScape 2 followed in 2004–2007, RuneScape 3 in 2012, and Old School RuneScape in 2013. Jagex’s company history outlines those milestones.
At the time of the 2024 sale announcement, Carlyle said Jagex had 2.4 million active subscribers and one million free-to-play users. Those are figures stated in the announcement, not current player counts. Carlyle also cited more than 300 million lifetime RuneScape accounts and $1.5 billion in lifetime franchise revenue; the revenue figure describes the franchise’s cumulative revenue, not the acquisition price.

What else was included in Jagex’s business?
Jagex had expanded beyond RuneScape before the sale agreement. It acquired Gamepires and Pipeworks Studios in 2022. Carlyle’s announcement said Jagex developed and published games for PC and mobile and employed approximately 700 people at that time.
