“The program can’t start because runtime.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”

runtime.dll is a real filename, but it does not identify one universal Windows component. The file usually belongs to the particular application or game that installed it, so the safest repair is to identify that program and repair its files before changing Windows system folders.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first matching description:

  • Only one game or application fails: Repair, verify, update, or reinstall that program.
  • The error appeared after an update: Roll back or reinstall the affected application.
  • The file disappeared after antivirus detection: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The error mentions a C++ runtime separately: Install the Visual C++ Redistributable package matching the application’s architecture.
  • A game mentions D3DX, XAudio, XInput, or XACT: Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs fail: Run DISM and SFC.
  • The error began immediately after a driver, cleanup, or software change: Consider uninstalling that change or using System Restore.
  • runtime.dll is in a temporary folder, startup location, user profile, or unrelated system directory: Treat it as suspicious and scan before attempting restoration.

Do not download a bare runtime.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. The file may be the wrong version, wrong architecture, corrupted, or malicious, and replacing it may not restore a dependency that the application also needs.

First, identify which program owns runtime.dll

The filename alone cannot tell you the publisher, version, architecture, or correct replacement. Find the calling application first.

Read the complete error

Note the executable named in the dialog, if one appears. A shortcut, launcher, installer, or game may be starting a different executable than expected.

Also record:

  • The full error text
  • The program or game name
  • Whether the failure occurs at startup, during an update, or when loading a saved file
  • The path shown in the error
  • Whether other applications still work normally

Common wording includes “There was a problem starting runtime.dll,” “Error loading runtime.dll,” and “The code execution cannot proceed because runtime.dll was not found.” These messages do not prove that all affected programs use the same component.

Check the application folder

Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, check Target, then open that location in File Explorer.

Search the application’s own installation folder for runtime.dll. Do not limit the search to C:Windows. A private application DLL commonly sits beside the program executable or inside one of its runtime, bin, or support folders.

If you find the file, right-click it and choose Properties:

  1. Open Details and note any product or file description.
  2. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  3. Select a signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  5. Note the file path and parent folder.

A missing signature does not automatically prove malware, but an unexpected location, unknown publisher, or recently modified file requires caution. Do not replace a file until you know which application needs it.

Check the launcher and installed-program entry

Game launchers often have their own Verify files, Repair, or Verify integrity command. Desktop applications may expose Repair or Change through their uninstall entry.

The original installer, the application publisher, or the store that supplied the program is the correct source for a replacement. Product-specific runtimes are not interchangeable. For instance, software built around a vendor runtime may require that vendor’s installer rather than a Microsoft package.

Fix 1: Repair, verify, or reinstall the application

This is the strongest first fix because a bare runtime.dll is not normally a standard Windows file.

Repair an app in Windows 11

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

Repair normally replaces damaged application files without removing the program’s settings. If Repair is unavailable or does not work, use Reset only when you are comfortable losing the app’s stored settings.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs → Programs and Features.
  3. Right-click the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair or Change.
  5. Follow the installer’s instructions.

For a game, open the launcher and use its file-verification or repair function. If verification reports missing files and cannot restore them, uninstall the game and reinstall it from the same official publisher or store source.

Restart Windows after reinstalling, then launch the exact executable that produced the error. If it starts normally, the application’s private copy of runtime.dll was probably incomplete, corrupted, or removed.

Fix 2: Check the exact prerequisite runtime

Do not install every runtime package as a guess. First check the application’s documentation, installer, readme, or error message for the prerequisite it actually requires.

Visual C++ Redistributable

Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable normally provides files with names such as vcruntime*.dll, msvcp*.dll, and api-ms-win-crt-*.dll. Microsoft does not document it as the provider of a generic runtime.dll.

If the application identifies a Visual C++ dependency:

  1. Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
  2. Download the package matching the application.
  3. Use vc_redist.x86.exe for a 32-bit application.
  4. Use vc_redist.x64.exe for a 64-bit application.
  5. Use vc_redist.arm64.exe for an ARM64 application.
  6. Run the installer and choose Repair if that option appears.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

A 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows commonly needs the x86 package. The operating system’s architecture does not decide the application’s package. Older software may require a side-by-side legacy release, such as Visual C++ 2013 or 2010, which Microsoft lists separately.

Installing Visual C++ will not replace a product-specific runtime.dll.

Legacy DirectX components for games

Do not assume DirectX is related to every runtime.dll error. If the game specifically reports missing D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, or XACT components, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, whose package is dxwebsetup.exe.

After installation, reboot and launch the game again. If the game still reports runtime.dll, return to the game launcher and verify its files rather than copying DLLs from another installation.

Vendor runtimes and Windows Features

Some applications install their own runtime separately. Repair or reinstall that runtime through the application’s installer, launcher, or official support package. Do not substitute a DLL from another product.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Enable only the documented feature.
  5. Select OK and restart if requested.

Turning on unrelated Windows Features will not create a generic runtime.dll.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Defender or another security product may have quarantined an application file, but a missing DLL does not prove that the file was malware or a false positive.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand recent detections.
  5. Check the detected file’s path and publisher.
  6. Compare it with the application’s real installation folder.

Restore a quarantined file only if you have confirmed that it belongs to the expected application and has a trustworthy signature or known provenance. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. If the file is unexplained, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the application from its official source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application was downloaded from an unofficial source, uninstall it and scan the computer before reinstalling a legitimate copy.

Fix 4: Check architecture, permissions, and compatibility

A file can exist on disk and still fail to load. Windows may reject it because its architecture is wrong, a dependency is missing, the file is corrupted, or security controls prevent access.

Check these points:

  • Do not place a 64-bit DLL beside a 32-bit executable, or the reverse.
  • Do not mix files from different releases of the application.
  • Confirm that the DLL is in the folder expected by that application.
  • Right-click the program, select Properties → Compatibility, and test the documented compatibility mode only when the software is older.
  • Right-click the application and choose Run as administrator once as a diagnostic. If that works, investigate permissions or security software rather than permanently running everything elevated.
  • Check whether Controlled folder access or third-party antivirus is blocking the application.

For a driver-dependent game or utility, update the graphics, chipset, or device driver from the hardware manufacturer. In Device Manager, right-click the relevant device, choose Update driver, and follow the available prompts. Device Manager cannot recreate an application’s private runtime.dll, but a broken driver can cause a program to fail later in its startup sequence.

Manually finding stale drivers across many hardware entries is tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show what needs attention; driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program owns runtime.dll.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use Windows component repair when multiple unrelated programs fail or Windows itself shows signs of corruption. These commands will not normally recreate a third-party application’s private runtime.dll.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft documents DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. A successful SFC result means protected Windows files were checked or repaired, not that an application-owned DLL was restored.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan to show the underlying issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for every runtime.dll case.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began immediately after an application update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select an appropriate restore point.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Start the restore and restart Windows.

System Restore can revert system files, settings, registry state, and installed programs without deliberately removing personal files. It may undo software installed after the selected restore point, so reinstall the affected application afterward if necessary.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run regsvr32 runtime.dll merely because the filename ends in .dll. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs and OCX files designed to expose registration entry points, especially COM or ActiveX components.

A normal private application runtime library is usually loaded directly by its executable and is not registered. Registration may produce another error without restoring the missing dependency. Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly identifies the DLL as a COM or ActiveX component and supplies the correct registration instructions. Microsoft’s DLL registration guidance explains that limited scope.

If runtime.dll still fails

Before trying another repair, record:

  • The failing executable’s complete path
  • The full error message
  • The path of runtime.dll, if present
  • The application’s bitness
  • The DLL’s publisher and digital-signature status
  • Any Windows Security detection
  • The application error shown in Event Viewer
  • Whether the launcher’s verification completed successfully

Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs → Application for an error at the time of the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If runtime.dll is in a temporary folder, startup directory, user-profile location, or unrelated system folder, isolate it and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Reinstall the affected application from its official source rather than copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64.

Prevention

  • Keep the application and its launcher updated through their official channels.
  • Let game launchers verify files after interrupted updates.
  • Do not delete unfamiliar DLLs during disk cleanup.
  • Keep antivirus protection enabled.
  • Retain older Visual C++ packages when older applications still need them.
  • Back up important saves and configuration files before resetting or reinstalling software.
  • Never assume that two files with the same name are interchangeable.

FAQ

Is runtime.dll a Windows system file?

There is no verified evidence that a generic bare runtime.dll is a standard Windows component. It normally belongs to the program that installed it.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix runtime.dll?

Not necessarily. Visual C++ supplies files such as vcruntime*.dll and msvcp*.dll, not a universally defined runtime.dll. Install it only when the application identifies that dependency.

Should I copy runtime.dll into System32?

No. Copying an arbitrary DLL can create version conflicts, architecture mismatches, or security problems. Repair the owning application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “specified module could not be found” mean?

It can mean that runtime.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency of the DLL is missing, incompatible, blocked, or corrupted.

Does regsvr32 repair the file?

Usually not. It applies to DLLs designed for COM or ActiveX registration, not ordinary private application runtime libraries.

Can SFC restore runtime.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not generally restore a third-party application’s private DLL.
