Start with this quick diagnosis
Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which HP printer or print queue triggers the error
- Whether it appears while printing, installing the printer, or starting Windows
- Whether the printer is connected by USB or network
- Whether the problem began after a Windows update, driver update, printer replacement, or antivirus alert
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

hpcjrrps.dll is an HP printer-driver component, not a normal Windows system DLL. It is associated with an HP PostScript JobRetention render module, so the correct repair is normally to rebuild the affected HP printer installation rather than copy a replacement file into System32.
What hpcjrrps.dll does
The file is described in public file inventories as a JobRetention Render Plug-In module associated with Hewlett Packard PS JobRetention software. Its likely purpose is handling PostScript print-job retention or storage features.
A directory listing places it in:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversx64
That location is part of the Windows print-driver area. It is not the same as the general Windows DLL location, even though both may be beneath C:WindowsSystem32.
The exact HP printer models and installer packages that include this file are not conclusively documented. Public catalogs also disagree about its architecture and report different file details. Treat those catalog values as clues only, not as requirements for downloading a matching DLL.

If the file is present in an HP spool-driver directory beside other HP driver files, that is consistent with a legitimate installation. A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves a malware scan and signature check.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “hpcjrrps.dll was not found”
- “The file hpcjrrps.dll is missing or corrupted”
- “Error loading hpcjrrps.dll”
- “Failed to load hpcjrrps.dll”
- “The specified module could not be found”
The last message is easy to misread. Windows may be saying that a dependency required by the DLL or print driver is missing, not that hpcjrrps.dll itself is absent. Copying the named file back may therefore leave the actual problem untouched.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the affected HP printer
This is the safest and most likely solution.
1. Identify the printer
Open Settings with Windows + I, then select:
- Bluetooth & devices
- Printers & scanners
- Select the HP printer associated with the error
Also check Control Panel → Devices and Printers. Look for duplicate queues, old printer names, or queues that point to a printer you no longer use.
If the error appears only when one queue prints, that queue is the best starting point. You may only need to remove and recreate it rather than repair all of Windows.
2. Disconnect the printer
For a USB printer, unplug the USB cable. Leave network printers disconnected from the computer during removal if practical.
3. Remove HP software
In Settings:
- Open Apps
- Select Installed apps
- Search for HP printer software
- Select the relevant HP package
- Choose Uninstall
- Follow the removal wizard
You can also open Control Panel → Programs and Features, select the HP printer software, and choose Uninstall.
Then return to Printers & scanners, select the old printer, and choose Remove. Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
Removing only the printer icon may leave the damaged driver package installed, so remove the associated HP software as well.

4. Install the correct HP package
Use HP’s official Support site and search for the exact printer model. Download the current full-feature driver when available. If HP provides a Universal Print Driver, use it only when your printer is supported and select the appropriate printer language, such as PCL or PostScript.
Pay attention to:
- Exact model number, including suffixes
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
- PCL versus PostScript support
- USB versus network installation requirements
Run HP’s installer rather than extracting a DLL manually. Reconnect the USB printer when the installer requests it, or allow the installer to discover the network printer. Restart Windows when installation finishes.
How to confirm the repair
Print a Windows test page:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners
- Select the HP printer
- Open Printer properties
- Select Print Test Page
If the test page prints and the original application starts without the error, the driver package was repaired. If the error returns immediately, remove the old driver package as described below instead of reinstalling over it.
Fix 2: Remove an obsolete package from the driver store
Use this when the printer was replaced, an old HP queue remains, or reinstalling did not remove the damaged files.

- Right-click Start
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)
- Approve the User Account Control prompt
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Review the output and find HP entries. Record:
Provider NameClass NamePublished Name- The printer-related package details
Do not delete a package merely because its files include hpcjrrps.dll. Confirm that it belongs to the obsolete or damaged HP printer and is not shared by another working queue.
After identifying the correct published name, which resembles oem##.inf, remove it with:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the actual name you recorded. Use /force only when necessary and only after confirming that no other printer needs the package.

Restart Windows, then install the exact HP driver again. If you are unsure which package owns the file, stop before deleting anything and use Print Management where available:
- Press
Windows + R - Enter
printmanagement.msc - Expand Print Servers
- Select your computer
- Review Drivers and Printers
Some Windows editions do not include Print Management. In that case, use the printer’s properties and pnputil output rather than deleting files from the spool directory by hand.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error appeared after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security
- Select Virus & threat protection
- Choose Protection history
- Review alerts matching the time the printer stopped working
- Inspect the detected file path and threat information
Restore the file only when it is clearly part of a genuine HP driver installation and the surrounding package is trusted. A digitally signed, freshly downloaded HP driver package is safer than restoring an isolated file.

Fix 4: Check architecture and driver language
A mismatch can leave a printer partially installed even when the printer appears in Windows.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings
- Select System → About
- Read System type
Install the driver matching that architecture. Do not move files between:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
C:WindowsSystem32spooldrivers
Those locations serve different purposes, and copying a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL between them can create additional driver and dependency errors.

Also verify the driver language. A PostScript-related component should not be treated as proof that every HP printer requires a PostScript package. Select the language supported by the exact printer and the application workflow.
Fix 5: Update related drivers carefully
If the HP installer fails, update Windows and the printer connection drivers, then retry the complete HP installation.
For Device Manager:
- Right-click Start
- Select Device Manager
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Right-click the relevant device
- Select Update driver
- Choose Search automatically for drivers
Do not uninstall random devices or replace the printer driver with a generic one unless HP’s instructions call for it. The complete HP package remains the definitive fix for an HP-specific missing component.
Manually hunting through Windows Update and comparing dozens of driver versions is slow and can leave the wrong printer package in place. Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other symptoms exist
Because hpcjrrps.dll is associated with a printer driver rather than a protected Windows component, SFC and DISM are not the first repair tools. Use them when other Windows files, services, or applications are also failing.
Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the printer again.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run it again after DISM completes. If only the HP printer still fails, return to driver removal and reinstallation rather than repeating system scans indefinitely.
Running these commands manually can mean repeating repairs without knowing which component changed. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration functionality, commonly through a DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no reliable evidence that this HP print-render plug-in is a self-registering DLL.
Do not start with:
regsvr32 hpcjrrps.dll
It may produce a DllRegisterServer error, and it will not restore a missing dependency or rebuild the printer driver. Use the HP installer instead.

What not to do
Do not:
- Download
hpcjrrps.dllfrom a random DLL website - Copy it into
System32orSysWOW64 - Replace a 64-bit file with a catalog’s unverified 32-bit copy
- Delete files directly from the spool-driver directory
- Remove a driver package without checking which printer uses it
- Assume that every copy with this name is genuine
- Use a generic DLL repair utility as the primary fix
A standalone replacement can have the wrong version, architecture, signature, dependencies, or configuration. The safe replacement is the complete HP driver package from HP’s official Support site.
If the error still remains
Check these details before escalating:
- Confirm the exact HP printer model.
- Confirm the Windows edition and architecture.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete print queues.
- Review Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → PrintService.
- Check whether the failure began after a particular Windows or driver update.
- Try the built-in Windows printer driver if HP no longer provides a package for that Windows version.
The built-in driver may restore basic printing but can omit advanced HP features. If the failure clearly began after a recent change and all driver repairs fail, System Restore may be appropriate.
