If Rust closes before the main menu, start by fully restarting Steam and Windows, then update Steam, verify Rust’s files, and repair Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Do not reinstall the game first: Facepunch’s own startup guidance places a fresh installation after these lower-risk checks.
First identify where the failure occurs. A crash immediately after clicking Play usually points to Steam, damaged files, EAC, overlays, drivers, or local settings. A crash while joining a server can also involve memory, the pagefile, graphics settings, or a particular server. If the entire PC freezes, restarts, or blue-screens, investigate Windows, drivers, temperatures, firmware, and hardware stability rather than repeatedly reinstalling Rust.

Quick diagnosis before trying the fixes
- Does Steam show Running and then return to Play?
- Does Rust show a splash screen before closing?
- Does it reach the main menu but crash when joining a server?
- Do you see an EAC message such as an integrity violation, authentication timeout, or service-start error?
- Did the problem begin after a Windows, GPU-driver, Rust, Steam, ReShade, or antivirus update?
- Does Rust launch only when EAC is disabled?
- Does the whole computer lock up, restart, or show a blue screen?
Use the results to choose the relevant branch, but work through the fixes in order so you change as little as possible at each stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Fully restart Steam and your PC
Exit Rust, then exit Steam completely rather than merely closing its window. Reopen Steam and launch Rust from the Library. If it still fails, restart Windows and try again.

If Steam will not close, open Task Manager and end remaining Steam processes before reopening it. Do not end unrelated Windows processes.
Facepunch lists restarting the Rust client and Steam among its first responses to startup errors, while its EAC guidance also recommends restarting the PC for authentication-related problems. See Facepunch’s startup troubleshooting guide and its EAC authentication guidance.
What this tells you: If a restart fixes Rust, the cause may have been a stuck Steam handoff, stale EAC state, incomplete update, or temporary service failure. If nothing changes, continue.
2. Update Steam and leave Steam Beta participation
In Steam, choose Steam → Check for Steam Client Updates. Install any update and restart Steam.
If the problem began while using a Steam beta build, open Steam’s settings and find the current Beta Participation option in the Interface or related settings area. Opt out of beta participation, apply the change, and restart Steam. Steam’s labels can move between client versions, so use the settings search if necessary.
Facepunch specifically includes updating Steam and opting out of Steam beta participation in its Rust startup procedure. This does not mean Steam Beta normally causes Rust crashes; it is a compatibility test recommended for startup problems.
3. Verify Rust’s installed files
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Rust and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam instructions may call this Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then restart Steam and launch Rust.
Steam may reacquire missing or damaged files. Its official launch troubleshooting also recommends verification when a game remains stuck at “Preparing to Launch.”

Verification does not repair every cause. It will not automatically remove third-party overlays, fix a graphics driver, reset all local settings, or resolve every EAC service problem. If Rust still closes, continue to EAC troubleshooting.

4. Repair or rebuild Easy Anti-Cheat
EAC is especially likely when Rust displays an authentication or integrity error, returns to Steam immediately, or launches only without EAC.
Repair EAC
- In Steam, right-click Rust and choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Open the
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Use File Explorer’s address bar to run:
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe repair
Approve the administrator prompt. A console window may appear briefly without a normal graphical repair window. Restart Windows and launch Rust through Steam.
These are the steps in Facepunch’s EAC authentication-timeout instructions.

Rebuild the local EAC files
For an EAC client-integrity violation, Facepunch recommends removing Rust’s local EAC folder and rebuilding it through Steam:
- Browse to Rust’s installation directory.
- Delete the local
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Exit Steam completely.
- Run Steam as administrator for this repair sequence.
- Verify Rust’s files again.
- Restart Steam normally and launch Rust.
If an authentication timeout persists, delete this file if it exists, then verify the game again:
RustEasyAntiCheatRustClient.exe.eac
Never download replacement EAC files or unofficial “repair tools” from third-party sites. Use Steam and the game’s own installation files. See Facepunch’s integrity-violation guide.
5. Remove ReShade and test overlays
Rust prohibited ReShade beginning January 13, 2025. If ReShade is installed, remove it from Rust’s directory, verify the game files, restart Steam, and test before enabling optional software again. Facepunch documents this procedure in its ReShade initialization article.
Also temporarily close nonessential software that injects into games or interacts with EAC, including:

- Macro and peripheral-management software
- Third-party overlays and recording tools
- Other anti-cheat software
- VPNs or network-filtering utilities when the error is authentication-related
Facepunch’s EAC guidance refers to “forbidden applications” and recommends checking output_log.txt for flagged software. If a security product is suspected, perform only a short, controlled test and restore protection immediately. Do not permanently disable Windows Security, antivirus, or anti-cheat systems.
6. Update Windows and check the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and then check the driver for your GPU through its official manufacturer channel:
Restart again before testing Rust. Steam’s game-launch troubleshooting recommends current Windows and graphics drivers.
“Latest” does not always mean “most stable.” If Rust began crashing immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver or use the manufacturer’s supported clean-install process. Treat rollback as a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.
7. Reset local settings and check memory pressure
Rename Rust’s local configuration
Damaged local settings can survive file verification. Back up the folder first, then rename it so you can restore files selectively:
- Close Rust and Steam.
- Open:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowFacepunch Studios
- Rename the
Rustfolder toRust-backup. - Launch Rust and test it with newly generated settings.
This may reset preferences, cached data, and other local files. If the crash disappears, copy back only settings you need rather than replacing the new folder wholesale. This is a practical configuration-reset procedure, not a guarantee that every startup crash is caused by the folder.
Check RAM, disk space, and the pagefile
If Rust crashes during asset loading or while joining a server, check whether Windows is running low on memory. Close demanding applications, ensure the system drive has free space, and make sure Windows virtual memory is enabled on a drive with adequate room.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not apply a fixed rule such as setting the pagefile to three times installed RAM. A system-managed pagefile is generally the safer starting point, and arbitrary fixed values can waste disk space or fail to address the actual problem. Facepunch maintains Rust support material covering virtual-memory and pagefile issues in its Rust support category.

8. Use EAC-disabled launch only as a diagnostic
Facepunch provides instructions for launching RustClient.exe with EAC disabled to compare behavior. If Rust reaches the menu with EAC disabled but crashes during the normal Steam launch, EAC or software interacting with it becomes a strong suspect.
Use the procedure in Facepunch’s EAC-disabled launch guide. A typical default installation is:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonRust
Your library may be on another drive. This test is not a normal multiplayer workaround and does not prove that Rust will function normally on protected servers. Return to standard Steam/EAC launching after the comparison.

| Result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Steam returns from “Running” to “Play” | Steam handoff, EAC, missing files, permissions, or a process-level failure |
| Verification reacquires files and Rust launches | Damaged or incomplete installation files were probably involved |
| EAC repair changes the behavior | EAC installation or service state was likely involved |
| Removing ReShade fixes the crash | Injected files conflicted with Rust’s current anti-cheat policy or startup |
| EAC-disabled launch works | Strong evidence that EAC or an interacting application is involved |
| Only joining servers causes the crash | Memory, loading, graphics, network, or server-specific causes are more plausible |
| The entire PC crashes | Investigate Windows, drivers, thermals, firmware, power, or hardware stability |
When to reinstall or contact support
If the normal fixes fail, perform a fresh Rust installation using Facepunch’s startup guidance. Before testing, do not restore old launch options, ReShade files, modified executables, or overlays.
A reinstall replaces damaged game files, but it will not necessarily fix a broken driver, Windows corruption, EAC conflict, memory pressure, hardware instability, or a current game-side bug.
Contact Facepunch Support when a fresh install fails, the EAC-disabled comparison clearly isolates EAC, or Rust produces a repeatable error. Include:
- The exact error message and point of failure
- Your Windows version, GPU model, and driver version
- Whether Rust reaches the menu
- Whether EAC-disabled launch works
output_log.txt, if present- Relevant Windows Event Viewer application-error details
- Whether other games crash too
If other games also crash, or Windows blue-screens or reboots, prioritize system stability troubleshooting instead of treating Rust as the sole cause.
