Rust’s industrial system lets you move resources between containers and run repeatable crafting without hand-carrying every stack. A practical base automation loop is: storage adaptor → industrial conveyor with filters → industrial crafter or destination container, powered with a small, separately fused branch. Build and test one loop first, then add splitters and additional conveyors only when the flow is reliable.

What Rust’s industrial system actually automates

Industrial parts form a pipe-and-control layer above ordinary storage. A storage adaptor exposes a box, furnace or locker to the network. An industrial conveyor moves selected items from one adaptor to another. An industrial crafter consumes the ingredients delivered to it, makes one recipe selected in its interface, and sends the finished items through its output port. An industrial splitter divides one pipe input among three outputs.

The system does not make decisions like a general-purpose computer. Every transfer depends on a valid pipe connection, a powered component, a filter or destination that accepts the item, and available space. Automation therefore works best when each line has one clear job: feed a crafter, refill a furnace, collect output, or distribute a material to several containers.

Core components and what each one does

Component Role Important connections or limits Power information
Storage adaptor Connects a box, furnace or locker to industrial pipes so items can enter or leave. Placed on the container; the container remains the physical inventory. No separate draw is stated in the available documentation.
Industrial conveyor Moves items between adaptors and filters which item types are allowed to pass. Uses pipe connections and has Power In, Turn Off and Turn On wiring inputs. 1 rW on the Facepunch wiki.
Industrial crafter Repeats one recipe selected in its UI when ingredients arrive. Ingredients enter through the input side; finished items leave through the output port. 1 rW on the Facepunch wiki.
Industrial splitter Routes one pipe input to three output pipes. One input, up to three outputs; use it to branch a material stream. Published values conflict; verify the live server value in-game.

Names and behavior can change with Rust updates or server configuration. The figures above should be treated as the state documented on October 14, 2026, not as a promise that every community server uses identical settings.

Plan the network before placing pipes

Give every container one job

Label the intended role of each container mentally or with signs: raw input, recipe ingredients, crafter output, furnace fuel, furnace ore, or finished stock. A dedicated input box prevents a conveyor from pulling materials that another production line needs. It also makes troubleshooting possible: if an item is missing, you know which inventory to inspect first.

Keep input and output physically separate

Do not return a crafter’s output to the same unrestricted input container. A loop can continuously feed finished goods back into a line, consume storage space, or make it difficult to tell whether the recipe is actually running. Place the output adaptor on a separate box and filter the input conveyor to the exact ingredients required.

Reserve space for power and access

Industrial components still need electrical wiring and maintenance access. Leave a service corridor near the conveyor and crafter, place switches or timers where you can reach them, and avoid burying adaptors behind deployables. A compact network is easier to repair than a slightly shorter network hidden inside a wall.

How to build a basic automated crafting line

  1. Place the source container. Put a box near the production area and install a storage adaptor on it. Fill this box only with the ingredients intended for the recipe.
  2. Place the crafter. Install an industrial crafter with enough room to attach an input pipe and an output pipe. Open its interface and select one recipe. The crafter is a single-recipe machine; changing the selected recipe changes what the line will make.
  3. Add an output container. Place another box, install its storage adaptor, and connect the crafter’s output port to that adaptor. Keep this inventory separate from the ingredient box.
  4. Install the conveyor. Connect the source adaptor to the conveyor’s item input and connect the conveyor’s output to the crafter’s input. Industrial pipes must form a continuous route; an electrical cable alone does not move items.
  5. Configure filters. In the conveyor interface, allow only the ingredients required by the selected recipe. Set quantities or movement rules available on your server so the conveyor does not drain every copy of a scarce component.
  6. Wire power. Supply the conveyor and crafter from your electrical system. The documented draw is 1 rW for each conveyor and 1 rW for each crafter. Connect the source to Power In and test that both devices report power.
  7. Run a small test batch. Place a few recipe cycles’ worth of ingredients in the source box. Watch the crafter interface and output inventory before filling the box completely. This catches reversed pipes, incorrect filters and insufficient power without risking a large stockpile.
  8. Protect the line. Add a switch, timer or other control to the conveyor’s Turn On and Turn Off inputs if you need scheduled production. Leave a manual way to stop the line before changing recipes or servicing storage.

By default, community documentation describes a five-second movement cycle for conveyors and a five-second crafting cycle for crafters. A server operator can change the relevant frequencies, so a test on your own server is more reliable than assuming that every line advances at the default interval.

Industrial conveyor controls explained

Power In

Power In is the normal electrical feed. A conveyor that has a perfect pipe route but no power will not move items. Budget the documented 1 rW per conveyor and check the component’s status after wiring.

Turn On and Turn Off

These control inputs let another electrical device enable or disable movement. A wall switch is useful for an emergency stop; a timer can automate a production window. Make the control state obvious with a light or a sign, because a disabled conveyor looks similar to one that has no valid item route.

Filters and direction

Filtering is the safety mechanism that keeps unrelated materials out of a line. Use a narrow allow-list for a crafter rather than a broad category. If a recipe needs several ingredients, add each required item and verify that the quantities arriving match the recipe. When a destination fills, inspect whether the conveyor is still drawing from the source; excess movement can make shared storage unexpectedly empty.

Setting up an Industrial Crafter reliably

Select exactly one recipe

Open the crafter UI, choose the recipe you want repeated, and confirm that the displayed ingredients match your conveyor filters. The crafter does not infer a recipe from whatever items arrive. If you later switch recipes, stop the feed first so the previous recipe’s materials do not remain mixed with the new ingredient set.

Feed ingredients through a controlled input

Use one conveyor per ingredient group or a single conveyor with an explicit allow-list. A dedicated source box is preferable for high-value components. Keep reserve materials in a separate inventory so a test run cannot consume your entire base supply.

Collect output separately

Connect the crafter output to its own adaptor and box. Check that the output container has room before starting a long run. If the destination is full, crafting may stop or the line may appear stalled even though the electrical system is healthy.

Use scheduled runs when appropriate

For ammunition, medical items or building components, a timer can energize the conveyor only during a production window. The Rust Casino wiki identifies the timer as an electrical item that can wire to conveyor controls, including Industrial Input, Power Input, Turn On and Turn Off. Exact timer behavior and available settings depend on the current game and server build, so test the timing with a small batch.

Using an Industrial Splitter

An industrial splitter takes one pipe input and routes it to three outputs. It is useful when one ingredient store must supply several crafters, furnaces or destination boxes. Connect the source line to the splitter’s input, then run each output to a separate downstream adaptor or conveyor.

Balance the branches

A splitter is a routing device, not a guarantee that three destinations receive identical quantities at every moment. If one branch is full or blocked, observe how your server handles the available path before committing valuable resources. Keep branch lengths and destination capacities similar when you want roughly even replenishment.

Do not confuse item routing with electrical routing

The splitter’s three pipe outlets carry items. Electrical distribution is a separate design problem. The Rustrician handbook describes the splitter as dividing power evenly among up to three outputs, while other community references list a power cost for the item-routing component. Because those descriptions conflict and an official Facepunch power value was not available in the material consulted, verify the splitter’s actual draw and port behavior on the live server before sizing your power plant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use several conveyors instead

Use separate filtered conveyors when each destination needs different item rules, priorities or on/off control. A splitter is simpler for identical branches; independent conveyors are easier to isolate when one production line must stop without interrupting the others.

Electricity requirements and safe power design

Device Documented draw or behavior Design implication
Industrial conveyor 1 rW on the Facepunch wiki. Multiply by the number of conveyors on the branch, then leave headroom for switches, timers and other base devices.
Industrial crafter 1 rW on the Facepunch wiki. Each additional crafter adds another 1 rW requirement.
Industrial splitter Unresolved: one source lists 0 rW, another lists 2 electricity per operation. Measure or inspect the component on your server instead of relying on either conflicting figure.

Build a dedicated branch from your power source to the industrial area when possible. Add a switch upstream of the production line, and label the branch so a base mate can shut it down without guessing. A power failure and a disabled conveyor produce similar symptoms, so check the device status and switch state before rebuilding pipes.

Electrical splitters may be convenient for small circuits, but community builders often prefer power branches because splitters can waste rW. Treat that as a design preference rather than a universal rule: compare the measured draw and the parts available on your server.

Timing, throughput and server configuration

The five-second default

Hostari and Rust Survival describe a default five-second interval for conveyor movement and a five-second crafting interval. These are cycles, not a guarantee that every item appears exactly five seconds after you insert it; a full destination, blocked route, missing ingredient or disabled device can add delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convars that can change the result

Community documentation names a conveyor move-frequency setting and server.industrialcrafterfrequency as relevant server controls. Administrators can alter them, so players on modded, accelerated or role-play servers should ask for the configured values. A faster crafter also consumes ingredients and fills outputs sooner, which can expose storage limits that never appear at the default rate.

Test throughput instead of guessing

  1. Empty the destination container and record its starting state.
  2. Load a known quantity of one ingredient set.
  3. Run the line for several cycles while watching conveyor movement and crafter progress.
  4. Stop the line and compare source, crafter and output inventories.
  5. Repeat after any server setting, recipe, filter or power change.

Network size and scaling limits

One Falcon Rust guide states that a single conveyor network supports a maximum of 16 containers, including storage adaptors in and out. That is a single-source community figure rather than an officially confirmed limit. A Rust Clash user comment reports a network with 31 or more splitters still reaching 31 boxes, but that anecdote does not establish a supported maximum. Treat 16 containers as a planning warning: divide a large base into multiple networks and verify the actual limit on the server you play.

How to scale without creating a fragile maze

  • Use one network for raw materials and another for finished goods when the container count approaches the server’s observed limit.
  • Place splitters near the source, then keep each branch short and dedicated.
  • Give every branch a shutoff control so a blocked destination does not force you to disable the entire factory.
  • Document which box feeds which crafter; a sign is cheaper than dismantling pipes to rediscover the layout.

Practical automation layouts

Single-recipe workshop

Use one ingredient box, one filtered conveyor, one crafter and one output box. This is the best first build because every failure has a small search area. Add a manual switch and run short tests before expanding.

Shared component supply

Place a bulk component box before an industrial splitter, then send the three outputs to separate filtered conveyors or crafters. Keep each destination’s recipe compatible with the material being distributed. If one branch requires a different mix, give it its own conveyor rather than relying on a broad shared filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Furnace replenishment

Use an adaptor on the ore or fuel container and another on the furnace. Filter the conveyor so ore and fuel cannot be confused, and keep the furnace output connected to a separate storage destination. Test one furnace first; a mistake multiplied across several furnaces can consume a large stockpile.

Batch production room

Group several crafter lines around a central service corridor. Put controls at the entrance, keep output boxes accessible, and separate high-value ingredients from common bulk materials. Split networks before they become difficult to inspect rather than after a blocked pipe has stopped every machine.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely checks Fix
Nothing moves Power In, switch state, pipe continuity, source inventory. Restore power, turn the conveyor on, reconnect the broken segment and add an allowed item.
Conveyor moves the wrong item Filter list and source box contents. Remove broad or obsolete filters and allow only the required item types.
Crafter shows no progress Recipe selection, exact ingredient set, crafter power and input direction. Select the recipe again, correct filters, then test with a small known batch.
Crafter stops after starting One ingredient depleted or output container full. Refill the missing input or empty the output box before restarting.
Only one splitter branch works Output pipe connection, destination capacity and branch blockage. Reconnect the inactive outlet and clear the destination; test branches individually.
Automation is slower than expected Server frequency settings, blocked destination and cycle timing. Ask the administrator for conveyor and crafter frequency values and measure a clean test run.
Power network trips Total rW demand and uncertain splitter behavior. Measure the live draw, move industrial devices to a dedicated branch and add generation headroom.
Large network behaves unpredictably Container-count limit or excessive branching. Split the factory into smaller networks and retest each one separately.

Blueprint and research costs

Rust Clash lists the Industrial Conveyor and Industrial Splitter blueprints at 75 Metal Fragments each and workbench level 1. One separate guide reports a research-table cost of 15 Industrial Splitter Scrap; that figure is low-confidence and may reflect a particular version or server configuration. Check the current research UI before spending scrap, and do not assume the reported cost applies universally.

The available documentation does not state a craft cost for the Industrial Crafter. Plan the room and power branch first, then confirm the crafter’s live recipe and cost in your build menu rather than budgeting from an unstated number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rules for dependable, raid-resilient automation

  • Keep valuable ingredients in a secured room and expose only the adaptor and serviceable pipe route.
  • Use separate switches for production groups so one fault does not disable every automated device.
  • Leave physical access to adaptors; a hidden connection is difficult to repair after a wall change or raid.
  • Check output capacity before logging off with a long run enabled.
  • After a Rust update, retest cycle timing, splitter behavior, container limits and blueprint costs because these values can change.

The most reliable progression is incremental: prove one conveyor-to-crafter line, add a controlled output, then branch with a splitter only when the first line is understood. That approach keeps power demand visible, limits the impact of a bad filter and gives you a known-good module to copy through the rest of the base.
