Rust Server on Linux vs Windows: Which Should You Choose?

Linux suits SSH-driven, automated Rust servers; Windows suits GUI-focused administration. Both are supported, need substantial resources, and require careful updates, firewall rules, backups, and DDoS protection.

Choose Linux for a headless Rust dedicated server that you will manage over SSH, automate with shell scripts, and run with minimal desktop overhead. Choose Windows if you want GUI administration, Windows-native tools, or the closest match to Rust’s officially listed client platform. Facepunch supports dedicated servers on both operating systems, so there is no documented universal speed winner; your administration skills, update discipline, security setup, and hosting budget matter more.

Both platforms need the same substantial hardware baseline: 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space, with SSD or NVMe storage highly preferred. Larger maps and higher populations require more memory, storage, and CPU capacity.

The short decision

Choose Linux when… Choose Windows when…
You are comfortable with SSH, shell scripts, permissions, firewalls, and package updates. You prefer a graphical desktop, Windows administration tools, or remote GUI access.
You want a lightweight, headless machine that is easy to automate. Your existing monitoring, backup, and management tools are Windows-based.
You can track distribution and library compatibility through game updates. You want the least surprising match with Rust’s officially listed Windows client environment.
You are operating on hardware or a host where Linux licensing costs are lower. Your team already maintains Windows Server and accepts its licensing cost.

Do not select an operating system because of an assumed frame-rate or tick-rate advantage. No controlled, current Windows-versus-Linux benchmark is published in the official material for Rust dedicated servers. Treat the choice as an operations decision.

What the Rust dedicated server supports

Facepunch’s server guide describes a system based on “Windows, Linux or OSX.” The dedicated server is installed and updated with SteamCMD, and Rust’s Steam application ID is 258550. Windows commonly launches RustDedicated.exe -batchmode from a batch file. Linux installations use the Linux SteamCMD package, a shell startup script, and tools such as screen and RCON for administration.

This is separate from the player client. Rust is officially available for Windows and macOS, but the client is not natively supported on Linux. A Linux server is therefore perfectly valid even though Linux is not an officially supported client operating system.

Hardware and resource planning

Memory baseline

The current server guide lists 12 GB of free RAM as a baseline and notes that a 6k map will use more. “Free” means memory available to the server and its operating system, not merely the amount physically installed. A host running a desktop environment, control panel, database, monitoring stack, or backup process needs additional headroom.

Map size, connected population, plugins, entities, and world activity all affect memory pressure. If the machine begins swapping, players may see pauses and delayed saves even when average CPU usage looks modest. Leave room for the operating system and scheduled maintenance rather than sizing a machine to exactly 12 GB.

Storage

Facepunch lists 15 GB of free disk space and says SSD/NVMe is highly preferred. That figure is a starting point for the server installation and a basic world; it is not a safe long-term allocation for backups, logs, update staging, multiple worlds, or large maps. Keep free space available for downloads and temporary files during updates.

NVMe can reduce startup, save, and world-loading waits, but it does not remove CPU or network limits. Use SSD or NVMe for the game files and world data, and place backups where a failed disk or compromised host cannot destroy both the live server and its copies.

CPU and network

The supplied official figures do not define a universal CPU model, core count, bandwidth target, or player-count guarantee. Larger worlds and busy servers increase CPU, memory, storage, and network pressure. Choose a host with predictable single-thread performance, sufficient sustained cooling, and a network plan that includes DDoS mitigation rather than judging by advertised peak bandwidth alone.

Linux compared with Windows

Area Linux Windows
Installation SteamCMD, steamcmd.sh, shell scripts, screen, and RCON. SteamCMD, RustDedicated.exe, and a batch file.
Administration Strong fit for SSH, automation, scheduled jobs, and headless operation. Strong fit for GUI-oriented administration and Windows-native tools.
Maintenance You must track the distribution, GLIBC and other libraries, repositories, and end-of-life dates. Uses familiar Windows patching and desktop tooling; licensing can increase total cost.
Client parity The Rust client is not natively supported on Linux. Rust’s client requirements list Windows 11 64-bit.
Documented server baseline 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk; SSD/NVMe preferred. 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk; SSD/NVMe preferred.
Security work Firewall rules, least-privilege accounts, SSH protection, and service isolation. Firewall rules, account hardening, remote-access controls, and service isolation.

The hardware baseline is the same in the official guide. Neither platform receives an official performance advantage in the available documentation.

Installing and updating the server

Common preparation

  1. Provision a dedicated environment. Use a machine or virtual server reserved for the game where possible. Avoid sharing resources with unrelated high-load services.
  2. Install SteamCMD. SteamCMD is the documented installation and update path. Use Rust App ID 258550 when selecting the server content.
  3. Allocate storage and memory before downloading. Reserve more than the 15 GB installation baseline if you will retain backups, logs, plugins, or multiple worlds.
  4. Create a repeatable startup and update procedure. Keep configuration, startup arguments, backup jobs, and rollback notes in a location your administrators can access after a reboot.
  5. Open only the ports you intend to use. Separate player, query, and RCON traffic according to your configuration, and restrict administrative access to trusted addresses.

Linux workflow

  1. Download the Linux SteamCMD archive named steamcmd_linux.tar.gz and extract it into the directory you chose for the server tools.
  2. Start SteamCMD with ./steamcmd.sh, then install or update the Rust dedicated-server files using App ID 258550.
  3. Create a shell startup script for your server arguments and make it executable. Keep the script under version control or in a protected administrator directory so an update does not overwrite it.
  4. Run the server inside screen or an equivalent persistent session. The Linux console is not interactive in the same way as the Windows console, so use RCON for routine administration.
  5. Test a stop, restart, backup, and update cycle before inviting players. Confirm that the service returns after a reboot and that logs are written where expected.

Linux rewards automation, but every automated update should have a tested backup and rollback path. A script that launches reliably is not enough if a library update prevents the binary from starting.

Windows workflow

  1. Install SteamCMD and use Rust App ID 258550 to download or update the dedicated-server files.
  2. Create a batch file that starts RustDedicated.exe -batchmode with your chosen server settings.
  3. Run the batch file in a dedicated account or service arrangement with only the permissions the server needs. Do not use an administrator account for routine gameplay operations.
  4. Configure Windows Firewall for the player, query, and RCON ports you actually use. Restrict RCON and remote administration to trusted networks.
  5. Test restart behavior, backups, patching, and log retention. A graphical desktop makes troubleshooting easier, but it does not replace a recovery plan.

Linux maintenance and distribution lifecycle

Linux is not a “set and forget” choice. In April 2025, Facepunch warned that dedicated-server support for Debian 10 and Ubuntu 18 would be retired and urged server owners and hosting providers to update their infrastructure. The practical lesson is to select a currently supported distribution, monitor its end-of-life date, and verify that its libraries remain compatible with the game server.

Before a forced wipe or major game update, stage the update on a separate instance or maintenance window. Keep a known-good server build, configuration backup, world backup, and documented restore steps. Do not wait until an obsolete distribution blocks a security update or a game launch.

Administration: SSH and scripts versus a GUI

Why Linux is attractive to operators

  • SSH lets you administer a headless machine without paying for a desktop session.
  • Shell scripts can automate updates, restarts, log rotation, health checks, and backups.
  • Service managers and scheduled jobs make unattended recovery practical when configured and tested correctly.
  • Fine-grained permissions and a small installed software set can reduce the attack surface.

These advantages assume you understand users, groups, file permissions, SSH keys, firewall rules, package updates, and process supervision. If those tasks are unfamiliar, Linux can turn a simple game server into a systems-administration project.

Why Windows is attractive to operators

  • Remote desktop and graphical tools make files, processes, logs, and firewall rules visible to administrators who work primarily in Windows.
  • Batch files and Windows-native monitoring can provide repeatable operations without learning a new shell environment.
  • A team already managing Windows Server may have established patching, backup, and account policies.

Windows still requires hardening, least-privilege accounts, firewall management, and disciplined patch scheduling. A GUI can make a setting easier to find, but it cannot protect an exposed RCON port or compensate for weak credentials.

Security and public-server hosting

Security controls apply to both operating systems. For a public server, Facepunch recommends a dedicated environment, strong DDoS protection, the ability to change IP addresses quickly, and administrators who understand firewall configuration.

Keep hidden servers undiscoverable

If a server must remain private or hidden, pay particular attention to the Steam query port. Facepunch warns that the query port exposes server information and should be blocked when discoverability is not wanted. Blocking the wrong port can prevent legitimate connections, so document each port’s purpose and test from an external network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect administrative access

  • Restrict RCON to trusted source addresses or a private management network.
  • Use strong, unique credentials and rotate them when administrators change.
  • Allow only required inbound traffic through the host firewall and any provider firewall.
  • Separate backups from the live machine and test restoring them.
  • Record who can change startup arguments, plugins, firewall rules, and provider networking.

Private, unofficial, and community servers are permitted under Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines, updated 15 July 2025, provided they are fairly labelled and comply with the guidelines and applicable law. Monetisation is allowed under those conditions.

Cost and hosting implications

Linux commonly avoids operating-system licensing charges, while Windows licensing may be included in a hosting plan or billed separately. The actual difference depends on your provider and whether you already own suitable licenses. Compare the complete monthly cost: compute, memory, SSD/NVMe storage, backups, DDoS protection, IP changes, support, and license fees.

A low-cost shared virtual machine can be worse value than a more expensive dedicated environment if noisy neighbors, weak storage, or absent DDoS protection cause outages. For a public server, prioritize predictable resources and recovery options over the cheapest advertised plan.

Common problems and fixes

The server will not start after a Linux update

Check the distribution and library lifecycle first, especially if the host is based on an older Debian or Ubuntu release. Review the startup log, confirm that the server files are complete, and test on a supported distribution before changing game settings. Restore the last known-good build if the update coincided with the failure.

Players experience pauses or slow world saves

Check whether the host is swapping, whether free disk space is low, and whether the world size or population exceeds the machine’s comfortable capacity. Move world data to SSD or NVMe, stop unrelated workloads, and add memory or CPU capacity before increasing map size.

Remote administration stops when you disconnect

On Linux, run the process in screen or another persistent session and use RCON for routine commands. On either platform, configure a service or scheduled restart method that you have tested rather than relying on an open terminal or remote desktop window.

A private server appears in listings

Review query-port exposure and provider-level discovery settings. Facepunch specifically warns that the Steam query port reveals server information; block it when the server must remain undiscoverable, while leaving the required player connection path available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update fills the disk

Measure free space before patching, remove obsolete logs and staged downloads according to your retention policy, and keep backups on separate storage. The 15 GB figure is a baseline, not a recommendation for a production server with historical backups.

A practical selection checklist

Choose Linux if most of these statements are true:

  • You will manage the server primarily through SSH.
  • You can maintain shell scripts, permissions, firewalls, and package updates.
  • You want headless operation and automated backups or restarts.
  • You will monitor distribution and library support throughout the server’s life.
  • Your provider’s Linux plan gives the DDoS and recovery controls you need.

Choose Windows if most of these statements are true:

  • Your administrators are more productive with graphical Windows tools.
  • You already maintain Windows Server patching, backups, and remote access.
  • You need Windows-native monitoring or management software.
  • The provider’s Windows license cost fits the budget.
  • You want the server operating environment to align with Rust’s officially listed Windows client platform.

For either choice, confirm the same fundamentals before launch: at least 12 GB of free RAM, at least 15 GB of free disk space, SSD or NVMe storage, a supported operating system, tested SteamCMD updates, restricted RCON access, firewall rules, backups, and DDoS protection appropriate to your audience.

Bottom-line recommendation

For an experienced administrator building a reliable, headless, script-driven server, Linux is usually the better operational fit. For a Windows-focused team that values GUI access and familiar tooling, Windows is the safer practical choice. Neither decision is justified by a proven universal performance lead. Select the platform you can patch, secure, monitor, and recover confidently, then size the hardware for your map and population rather than the operating-system label.
