Rustler (Grand Theft Horse) was the Epic Games Store’s medieval, top-down answer to chaotic GTA-style action—but its reported free-claim window ended on January 29, 2026. The game is an open-world single-player comedy built around missions, stolen horses and mayhem, not a modern-day GTA clone.

How does Rustler compare with GTA?
Epic calls Rustler “an open-world, top-down action game paying tribute to the good old GTA style and gameplay, fusing it with a historically inaccurate medieval setting.” That is a broad description of its inspiration, not a claim that it matches any particular Grand Theft Auto game feature for feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Horse: Wreak havoc in a medieval world inspired by classic gameplay. Use swords, spears, turds – whatever will get the job done!
- Wear the Crown: As a poor peasant, you’ll need to get creative in order to win the Great Tournament. Form weird alliances, double cross your foes, and dig up dinosaur skeletons (because, why not?).
- A Medieval Sandbox: How you progress is up to you. Spend your time completing quests, wreaking havoc and having a laugh at the expense of others!
- A Lot of Horsin’ Around: Shoot cows into the sky, drag your neighbors through the mud, toss some holy hand grenades, or draw fancy pictures in the field with a plow.
- Minstrelsy of Power: Hire a musical companion to play the tunes you like and add a powerful soundtrack to your adventures."
- View and setting: The game uses a top-down camera and a deliberately anachronistic medieval world rather than a contemporary crime setting.
- Transport and combat: Horses and carts take the place of modern vehicles in the store’s framing; swords and crossbows feature alongside the game’s broader chaos.
- Activity and tone: Epic describes twisted missions and free-form troublemaking in villages and cities, with Monty Python-inspired humor and pop-culture references.
Epic’s description puts the choice simply: “Choose to go on foot, or by a stolen horse.” The result is a parody of open-world crime-game mayhem translated into a medieval setting, rather than a direct substitute for a specific GTA entry. Epic Games Store listing.
What platforms and features does Epic list?
The Epic listing specifies Windows, single-player play, cloud saves and controller support. Controller support is optional; the listing does not name a particular compatible controller. Epic lists a PEGI 18 rating for extreme violence and strong language, which should not be taken as a rating for other regions.

Notebookcheck reported a snapshot of more than 1,100 Steam reviews, with 79% positive, in its 2026 coverage. That is a dated figure reported by Notebookcheck, not a current review count or an independently verified live Steam statistic. The publication also described the mission structure as potentially repetitive and melee encounters as rough; those are its assessments, not firsthand findings here. Notebookcheck.
