What kind of Mortal Kombat game is this?
Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games, Mortal Kombat 1 launched worldwide on September 19, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The publisher says QLOC developed the Steam and Epic versions, while Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive developed the Switch version under NetherRealm oversight. Warner Bros. Rather than continue the previous timeline directly, the story follows Fire God Liu Kang as he creates a new era. Familiar characters return with reimagined histories and relationships, giving the campaign a fresh starting point without abandoning the series’ recognizable cast. The publisher describes the game as combining a cinematic story with offline and online play, Fatal Blows, defensive Breakers, and Fatalities. How does combat and the Kameo system work?
The central combat appeal is its pace: you fight as a main character and can call a separately selected Kameo Fighter to assist during a match. Because the Kameo is chosen apart from the main fighter, it adds another strategic choice rather than simply expanding the list of characters you play as. The publisher confirms this separate-roster setup in its Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ.

Critics have often singled out the combat’s creativity, speed, and presentation, as well as the strategic possibilities of Kameos. Those are critical judgments, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the system; the same collection of review excerpts also shows disagreement about the game’s mechanics and breadth. Does the story and content hold up?
The cinematic campaign is a strong reason to consider the game, particularly if you want a new-timeline take on familiar characters. Review excerpts collected by Metacritic praise the rebooted story and visuals, while other commentary criticizes reduced features or underdeveloped mechanics. Treat those as differing outlet perspectives, not a single consensus about every mode.

After the campaign, the modes listed by Warner Bros. Games include Invasions, Ranked Kombat League, Kasual Versus Online, King of the Hill, private online matches, and local Versus. Invasions adds a solo-oriented progression mode, but it is not necessarily a reason to buy if you expect a consistently varied offline challenge. What works offline, and what needs internet?
You do not need an internet connection for the entire game. However, Warner Bros. Games says both Invasions and online multiplayer require one; online multiplayer on console also requires the relevant platform’s online subscription. Local Versus and other offline play do not require that subscription. Check the publisher’s connectivity and mode details if your buying decision hinges on a specific mode.

The publisher also lists crossplay and cross-progression for supported PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, and confirms rollback netcode. Availability is limited to those supported platforms; do not assume Nintendo Switch is included in those cross-platform features. The same FAQ says paid character unlocks through gameplay progression are not used, so that statement should not be read as a broader promise about every cosmetic or purchase option.
Which edition should you buy?
The main decision is whether you want only the base game or the released expansion package too. Warner Bros. Games announced Definitive Edition on May 14, 2025, as a digital release. It includes the base game, Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack and Kombat Pack 2, associated fighters and Kameos, Animalities, listed character skins, and currency. Its announcement gave suggested retail prices at launch, not current prices: $69.99 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and $59.99 for Switch. The publisher’s announcement lists the package and original SRPs.

The Definitive Edition announcement confirms a digital release; it does not establish that a physical Definitive Edition is available. If you already own the base game, compare the listed upgrade path against buying the bundle, and check exactly what your platform’s current listing includes. The PlayStation US page also lists an Elder God Bundle, but its live price and availability can change.

In an August 2025 report, PC Gamer said NetherRealm would add no more DLC characters or story chapters while continuing balance work. The report quoted Ed Boon’s August 8, 2025 statement: “With over 6.2 million games sold, we’re still committed to refining MK1 to be our most balanced game.” The sales figure and commitment are attributed to that dated statement; they do not mean online services have ended or that balance updates stopped. Who should buy Mortal Kombat 1?
- Good fit: players who want a cinematic Mortal Kombat campaign, fast fights, and a partner-assist mechanic to experiment with.
- Less compelling fit: players whose main priority is varied, fully offline post-campaign content; Invasions needs internet and has been criticized for repetition and slow traversal.
- Edition choice: compare the current Standard price with Definitive Edition’s included expansions, and account for whether you already own the base game.
- Platform check: verify current availability and included content on your storefront, especially if you need physical media or specific online features.
