The Radeon RX 9070 XT is the clear gaming winner over the GeForce RTX 3080. In Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 native-rendering hierarchy, it is roughly 40–50% faster in rasterized games, has 16GB of VRAM instead of 10GB on the standard RTX 3080, and delivers a much stronger platform for modern 1440p and 4K gaming. The RTX 3080 remains worth considering as a substantially cheaper used card, or when CUDA, DLSS, or Nvidia-specific creator and AI software matters more than native gaming speed.
This comparison uses the original RTX 3080 10GB as the default model. The later RTX 3080 12GB is slightly better in VRAM-heavy games, but it does not change the overall conclusion.

RX 9070 XT vs RTX 3080: specifications
The RX 9070 XT launched in March 2025 using AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture. The RTX 3080 launched in September 2020 using Nvidia’s Ampere architecture. That roughly four-and-a-half-year generation gap matters: the newer AMD card has faster modern-game performance, newer ray-tracing hardware, and more VRAM headroom.

Raster performance: the RX 9070 XT is around 40–50% faster
Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 GPU hierarchy uses geometric means from an 11-game suite and tests native rendering without DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or frame generation. Its results show a substantial RX 9070 XT lead:
| Resolution | RX 9070 XT | RTX 3080 | RX 9070 XT advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p Ultra | 156.6 FPS | 111.6 FPS | Approximately 40% |
| 1440p Ultra | 116.5 FPS | 82.0 FPS | Approximately 42% |
| 4K Ultra | 65.8 FPS | 43.9 FPS | Approximately 50% |
These are aggregate results, not guarantees for every game. CPU limits, drivers, game engines, settings, and the exact factory-overclocked model can change the gap considerably. See the full Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy for the test methodology and game list.
1080p
The RX 9070 XT is much faster on paper, but 1080p often shifts more of the workload to the CPU. With an older or midrange processor, the visible difference may be smaller than the aggregate figure suggests. A 1080p/60Hz monitor also hides much of the upgrade.

1440p is the RX 9070 XT’s most natural target. An average of 116.5 FPS versus 82 FPS makes it a genuine performance-class upgrade from the RTX 3080, particularly for high-refresh monitors and demanding newer games.
4K
At 4K, the approximately 50% raster advantage is more meaningful because the RTX 3080 is more likely to fall below 60 FPS. The RX 9070 XT’s 16GB memory buffer also gives it more room for high-resolution textures and future demanding games.
Ray tracing performance
The old blanket advice that Nvidia is always faster at ray tracing is too broad for this particular comparison. In Tom’s Hardware’s current aggregate RT results, the RX 9070 XT is ahead:
| Resolution | RX 9070 XT | RTX 3080 | RX 9070 XT advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p Ultra RT | 77.8 FPS | 51.3 FPS | Approximately 52% |
| 1440p Ultra RT | 55.5 FPS | 34.7 FPS | Approximately 60% |
| 4K Ultra RT | 30.1 FPS | 13.8 FPS | Approximately 118% |
The 4K result is more than twice as fast mathematically, but both cards generally need upscaling at that level. Conventional ray tracing, heavy ray tracing, and path tracing are not interchangeable workloads, so individual games can produce very different results.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
The RX 9070 XT’s advantage in this aggregate test does not mean AMD universally beats Nvidia in ray-tracing image quality or software support. Nvidia retains important advantages in its feature ecosystem, and the quality of DLSS and FSR depends on the game, mode, resolution, and implementation.
VRAM and long-term usability
The standard RTX 3080’s 10GB of GDDR6X remains workable for many 1440p games, so it is not accurate to call the card unusable. However, 10GB offers less margin for high-resolution textures, mods, demanding ray-traced games, and future releases. The RTX 3080 12GB improves that situation modestly.
The RX 9070 XT’s 16GB of GDDR6 is a meaningful advantage, especially at 4K. It does not make the card “future-proof,” and capacity alone does not determine performance, but it reduces the likelihood that texture settings or memory pressure will become the immediate limitation.
DLSS, FSR and frame generation
Native benchmark numbers answer the hardware-performance question. Upscaling and frame generation answer a different question: how fast a supported game can appear to run after reconstruction and generated frames are enabled.
- RTX 3080: supports DLSS Super Resolution, second-generation RT cores, and third-generation Tensor cores. It does not use the newer RTX 40/50-series frame-generation hardware path.
- RX 9070 XT: supports AMD FSR, including newer ML-based FSR 4.x features in supported games or implementations. Support is game-dependent rather than automatic across every title.
Do not compare DLSS Quality on one card with native rendering on the other and describe the result as a direct hardware comparison. For feature-assisted gaming, assess image quality, latency, game support, and whether frame generation is appropriate for the game’s base frame rate. AMD’s RDNA 4 feature positioning is outlined in its RDNA 4 announcement.
Power, cooling and PSU requirements
The reference RX 9070 XT is rated at 304W, while the RTX 3080 Founders Edition is rated at 320W. Their reference power figures are therefore close; the RX 9070 XT is not a low-power replacement. Actual consumption varies with the board partner, factory overclock, power limit, undervolting, cooling, and workload.
Both are commonly associated with a 750W-class power supply, but that is a manufacturer recommendation rather than an absolute guarantee. A suitable PSU must also be modern, high quality, and equipped with the required connectors. RTX 3080 cards may use Nvidia’s 12-pin connector with an adapter or multiple PCIe connectors depending on the model. RX 9070 XT cards generally use two conventional 8-pin connectors, although exact arrangements vary.

When buying a used RTX 3080, check fan noise, hotspot temperature, thermal-pad or paste condition, coil whine, mining history, adapter condition, and remaining warranty. A cheap card with degraded cooling can be a poor bargain.

Content creation, AI and CUDA
Gaming FPS is not the whole comparison. The RTX 3080 may still be the better tool for CUDA-dependent applications, Nvidia-specific AI frameworks, some Blender and rendering workflows, and software with stronger Nvidia optimization. Nvidia’s NVENC and related broadcast features can also matter for particular streaming setups.
That does not make the RTX 3080 universally faster for content creation or AI. The outcome depends on the application, renderer, API, codec, plug-ins, and drivers. Confirm support for the exact software you use before choosing on professional workloads alone.
Is the RX 9070 XT worth upgrading to from an RTX 3080?
Yes, it is a real gaming upgrade rather than a sidegrade, provided the purchase price is reasonable and your system can use the extra performance. The cited hierarchy shows roughly 40–50% higher native raster performance, with an even larger advantage in its aggregate RT results. The 16GB VRAM capacity, newer architecture, and current warranty also improve the upgrade’s practical value.
The financial decision depends on six things:
- Your RTX 3080’s actual resale value and condition.
- The RX 9070 XT’s real local price, not merely its $599 launch MSRP.
- Whether your monitor is 1440p or 4K and has a high refresh rate.
- The games you play and whether they are CPU-limited, VRAM-heavy, or ray-traced.
- Whether you depend on CUDA, DLSS, or Nvidia-specific software.
- Whether your PSU, case airflow, and CPU are suitable for the newer card.
US price-watch coverage observed RX 9070 XT listings around $719.99–$739.99 in August 2026, substantially above its launch MSRP. That dated price signal should not be treated as a permanent market price; regional taxes, stock, and board-partner models vary. At heavily inflated pricing, waiting or comparing newer alternatives makes more sense. See PC Gamer’s dated price-watch coverage for context.

Final verdict
The RX 9070 XT is the stronger all-round gaming GPU. It is around 40–50% faster than the RTX 3080 in the cited native raster suite, leads in the cited aggregate ray-tracing suite, and provides 16GB of VRAM instead of 10GB. It is the better new purchase for 1440p high-refresh or entry-level 4K gaming.
The RTX 3080 still makes sense when it is dramatically cheaper used, when the buyer mainly plays older 1440p games, or when CUDA, DLSS, and Nvidia application support are essential. Existing owners who are satisfied with their performance do not need to upgrade immediately, but anyone seeking a substantial gaming uplift—not a minor sidegrade—should choose the RX 9070 XT when the price is reasonable.
