Its documentation says the original project was discontinued on October 1, 2024; the later Ryubing fork describes itself as a quality-of-life uplift for existing users, not a revival. The docs specify at least 8 GiB of RAM and support for OpenGL 4.5, Vulkan, or Metal through MoltenVK, but neither those requirements nor historical compatibility figures guarantee that a particular game will run well on a particular PC.
What is Ryujinx?
Ryujinx is an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator, originally created by gdkchan and written in C#. The project documentation says development began in September 2017. An emulator reproduces aspects of a console’s hardware and software environment so compatible games can run on a different device; it does not make every game compatible or remove the need for the required game and system files. Ryujinx and Ryubing documentation.
Is Ryujinx still being developed?
The documentation states that Ryujinx was discontinued on October 1, 2024. The current Ryubing documentation describes its fork as a quality-of-life uplift for existing Ryujinx users and explicitly says it is not a revival project. That distinction matters: the existence of documentation for a fork is not evidence that the original project resumed development or that a particular build is actively maintained. Check the relevant project’s own documentation for its current releases and support status.
For historical context, Ars Technica reported in October 2024 that developer riperiperi said the original creator had been contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop work and remove assets under his control. The report said the negotiation’s final outcome was not public at that time; it is an account of what the developer told the publication, not a court ruling. Ars Technica’s October 2024 report.

What does a PC need to run Ryujinx?
The documentation sets 8 GiB of RAM as the minimum and warns that less can result in poor gameplay or unexpected crashes. It describes emulation of the Switch’s Maxwell GPU through OpenGL 4.5 or later, Vulkan, or Metal via MoltenVK. These are stated requirements and supported graphics paths, not a recommendation for a specific GPU or a promise of any frame rate. Actual results depend on the host system, software configuration, and game.
Ryujinx also has options including shader caching, resolution scaling, anti-aliasing, scaling filters, anisotropic filtering, and aspect-ratio adjustment. Its documentation describes audio output and ARMv8 CPU emulation, with some support for older instructions. The optional Profiled Persistent Translation Cache can reduce later game load times after a game has been launched to its title screen at least twice; the documentation does not establish a particular reduction for every title or machine. How compatible is Ryujinx with Switch games?
A project README compatibility snapshot dated May 2024 reported approximately 4,300 titles tested, more than 4,100 booting beyond menus into gameplay, and roughly 3,550 considered playable. “Boots into gameplay” and “playable” are different compatibility categories, and both figures describe the project’s snapshot at that date—not a guarantee for any specific game, current build, or host PC. Consult the project’s compatibility list for title-specific reports. Project README and compatibility information.
Compatibility is only one part of the decision. Build availability and maintenance, operating-system and graphics API support, host hardware, input options, and setup requirements also affect whether emulation is practical. The available figures do not provide a current, like-for-like benchmark against another emulator or native Switch play, so they cannot establish an overall winner.

Do I need a Switch to use this emulator?
The project FAQ’s guidance for commercial games requires access to a Switch compatible with custom firmware, from which users dump the system firmware, keys, and legally purchased games. In this context, “dumping” means transferring files from the console to a PC. The FAQ describes the project’s setup expectations; it is not a universal legal determination, and this article does not provide or direct readers to unauthorized game, key, or firmware downloads. Project FAQ.
Legal rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances. A U.S. District Court filing dated October 3, 2025 discusses emulators, keys, and game files in a separate case involving alleged unauthorized streaming; it notes that Ryujinx’s repository had been removed voluntarily by its creator. That case-specific filing does not settle the legality of all emulation, backups, or file-acquisition methods. U.S. District Court filing.

What controls and input devices work?
The documentation describes support for keyboard, mouse, touch, Joy-Con, and nearly all controllers. Motion input works in most cases; using motion with a pair of Joy-Con may require helper software. A PC-compatible controller is optional, not a requirement. The FAQ provides configuration guidance for common controller types. Controller setup FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why use an emulator if you already have a Switch?
Whether emulation is useful depends on the player’s needs. The project documentation lists graphics options such as resolution scaling and anti-aliasing, along with support for different input devices. Those options may be relevant to someone who wants to configure play on a PC, but the documentation does not establish that emulation will look or perform better than native play for a given game. A Switch owner still needs to consider the project’s discontinued status, game-specific compatibility, host requirements, and the files needed for setup.

Are there optimal settings, and what if Ryujinx crashes?
There is no single documented “best” configuration that applies to every title and PC. The graphics options expose trade-offs, while the stated memory minimum and graphics API support are useful checks—not a preset performance recipe. If the emulator crashes, compare the PC with the documentation’s 8 GiB RAM minimum, confirm that its graphics environment supports a documented API, and consult the project FAQ and troubleshooting guidance for relevant symptoms. Without a specific game, system, and error, a more exact diagnosis would be speculation.
